CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Sara. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: How many weeks along?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just —

CLINIC: The first day of the last period?

CALLER: It was December 21st.

CLINIC: Okay. It will be $390 at this point.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — do you know if I have to be — like, well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he — is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. By law we have to at least notify your parents. They don’t have to give consent, but they have to be notified.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: I just — is there any way not to tell my parents? Because I don’t know what would happen if they found out. I mean, they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Basically by law, there’s really nothing else we could do. There is a thing called a judicial bypass. You have to go through the court system to do that. And it usually takes quite a while.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’d have to call the courthouse and talk to them about it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No, that’s the whole reason.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: To call them is to not have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Actually, nobody’s ever tried it in this county before.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Have you already taken one at home?

CALLER: No. I didn’t know if the ones that you could take at home were right.

CLINIC: Yes, they’re pretty dang accurate.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there anyways and take one?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I just don’t know — I just would rather have you guys do that.

CLINIC: Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. And how old are you?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: You’re 14 you said?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. It would be, I believe, $10 to have that done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend talked about all this, and we decided that like he was going to pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us or anything. Would you guys ask any questions or anything?

CLINIC: By law we’re required to.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum. By law. There’s nothing we can do besides follow the law.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: There’s a possibility.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: It just depends on what the court system would decide to do.

CALLER: Well, if I came in for a pregnancy test you would have to talk to the court?

CLINIC: Yes. We would have to call and report it to the Child Protective Services.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, so like even if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: If you just came in for a pregnancy test on your own and if you didn’t fill out like — Basically you don’t really have to fill out too much paperwork when you come in for a pregnancy test. And if you just — it’s hard to explain to you, but whatever you write down is what we ask you about. If you don’t write it down we don’t ask you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So if I came in without him and the pregnancy test said that I was not pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, so just when I’m signing stuff don’t tell everybody everything?

CLINIC: You know, I can’t really say that. But I’ll just tell you that anything that you list we have to ask you about.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Does that make sense?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. And if you wanted to make an appointment, I could definitely do that for you.

CALLER: Oh, what time?

CLINIC: Our next appointment would be Wednesday.

CALLER: Okay, what time on Wednesday?

CLINIC: We have morning and afternoon.

CALLER: Afternoon would probably be better.

CLINIC: Okay. How about 3:30?

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: And what’s your name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And what’s your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: What’s your phone number?

CALLER: Well, do you guys really need that?

CLINIC: It’s just in case we need to reschedule. Is there a phone number that we could call in case, you know, like if somebody gets sick and we have to reschedule the appointment?

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend got a new cell phone. Could I give you that number?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay, well I don’t know it yet because he just got it. But can I give you that? Like can I call you back with that?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: All right. Well, what was your name so that I can call you back?

CLINIC: This is Sara.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Was there anything else you needed?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. We’ll just see you Wednesday the 27th at 3:00 if for some reason I don’t talk to you again.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Pam. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Dr. Akino (sp) does in town here. It’s 888-7972.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just really worried because like — well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t think he can. It has to be a relative.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I believe it has to be your parent actually.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: But call them and find out.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I would suggest you take one. You know, buy one at the store and take it first before you call Dr. Akino.

CALLER: Oh. Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. They’re very accurate. Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my friend just told me to come in there because you guys were better to go to. And I would feel better if someone else was doing it.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can come in here, and they’re $12.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No. It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I would just feel better if my boyfriend was there. Would it be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: Sure. Uh-huh.

CALLER: But would you guys have to ask anything about him? Like he would pay for everything he said, but does he have to sign anything? It’s just, we were talking about all of this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Why don’t you both come in and then we can discuss it when you get here? Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant —

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: — would you guys be able to do birth control?

CLINIC: Well, we can get you an appointment for that one too. Uh-huh.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Everything is completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Veronica.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: The only doctor who does it here, Dr. Akino.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the number for him?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. 888-7972.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: You could try asking. If not, you’ll have to get a, like a thing called like a bypass where you go into I believe the courthouse and you go in front of a judge and, you know, let them know why you need this done, why you don’t want to have a baby, why you feel abortion is the correct thing to do for you at this time. And then, if they approve it, you don’t need your parents to do that. If they approve for you to have one, they’ll write you a bypass and you take it to the doctor and they’ll do it for you.

CALLER: Do they ever not approve it?

CLINIC: It just depends. If they feel like you don’t know enough about abortion, if you don’t — if you feel like it’s just something to do and you might regret it later. You really have to stand your ground and know that that’s what you want and you know that’s what you want and what it’s about. You know?

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: What? The bypass?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a cost.

CALLER: Really? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t — No. That’s what it’s for. That way your parent — you can go on your own without your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — I’m just really worried about all this because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21, and I’m scared. I mean, usually it’s — my periods are normal.

CLINIC: Right. Well, I would think you need to do this as soon as possible because the further along you are, the more expensive it’s going to be to have it terminated.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see if I really was pregnant?

CLINIC: Um-hum. 8:30 to 11:00, 1:30 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Would you guys have to tell my parents that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. But me and my — like my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Would you have to say anything about him though?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh. It’s all confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about it. We decided we didn’t want anyone to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But he was going to pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: When you come in, you fill out your own paperwork. We put you in the program that you don’t have, you won’t have to pay. So there’s no charge. And everything’s confidential. We don’t call, we don’t do anything to your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yeah. Same thing. No cost. We schedule you an appointment. And we don’t contact anybody that you’re here, that, you know, we need permission to see you, nothing like that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I was on birth control, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills? Because I can’t drive yet.

CLINIC: Yeah. What we would do, the day you’re here, get your exam, we give you three months worth. You will have to come in at the end of the three months because we check your weight and blood pressure to see how you’re doing on these pills. And if they’re fine, then you can take the rest of the year with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Dr. (unclear) office. Can you please hold?

CALLER: Well, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering how much it cost to get an abortion?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: How do you know —

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: January 15th?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That was the first day?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Right now you’re exactly eight weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Ten weeks and under is $320. If you have a negative blood type, it’s $65 extra.

CALLER: Are you there?

CLINIC: Yeah, I’m here.

CALLER: I was just actually wondering — I’m kind of worried ’cause like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Actually, you can’t have your boyfriend here. And if I were you, I wouldn’t let them know about the boyfriend, because then they could press charges against him.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because he’s 22 and you’re not even 14. You know what I mean? The best you could do is go to the courthouse and get a waiver. How old are you, 13?

CALLER: Yeah. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): She’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: I don’t think they would.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Either way, we’re going to need a police report because of your age.

CALLER: Why? What do you mean? What could happen?

CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying. Hold on one second.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello, honey?

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Okay. You need to notify either your mother or your father.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re only 13 years old. You’re a child. And you have to tell your parents, and they have to go get a police report, because that’s the law.

CALLER: Why do they have to get a police report?

CLINIC: Because it’s the law. And, unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that. Okay?

CALLER: But if they find out, they’ll be furious. I can’t tell them at all. I mean, I don’t know what to do. They can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. But you’re only 13 years old.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 like in —

CLINIC: Honey, it does not make a difference. Even when you turn 14, you’re still a child. You are a young child.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: I don’t know, sweetie. There’s really nothing else because that’s the law. Legally, if you try to do something else, it would be against the law, you know? It’s the law. We have no control over it. It’s just the way it is.

CALLER: Well, can I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Not without notifying one of your parents. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I’m just — I’m scared. I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m really sorry about that, but it’s out of our hands. Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: No. You need to tell your parents. We’re not even allowed to really counsel you without your parents’ permission. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.
