CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you know if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: There’s a few things you need done before you could do that.

CALLER: Okay. What needs to be done?

CLINIC: You would need to have a pregnancy test done here, and we would need to do an exam to tell you how far along you are.

CALLER: Do you have to be a specific age to get a pregnancy test? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. It doesn’t matter what age you are.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out at all because like, well the problem is, like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married and everything, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And there’s just no way that they could find out or anything.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to make an appointment to come in?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: When he could bring you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, and we can arrange for you to come in and have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So after the pregnancy test I could have an abortion, or —

CLINIC: Well, then you would have the pregnancy test and we do an exam. I don’t know if you’ve heard of the pap and pelvic exams?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Normally like we’ll do an exam like once a year, and then if for some reason it would be negative we can do an exam for you and then you would be able to get pills here if you would like to be on birth control, or if you want to be on the shot.

CALLER: Do I have to tell anybody about the —

CLINIC: No. It wouldn’t cost you anything.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend came and picked them up?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Yeah? Would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. It would just — you would have to come for the exam the first time, and then we would need you to come back three months later and get your blood pressure and weight checked.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then he can come and pick them up for you.

CALLER: So I could get an abortion like without my parents knowing at all?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay. And my boyfriend could bring me and everything?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. If I had more questions like I have to talk to him and see — but if I have more questions could I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. I mean, you can come in or if you want to just call and ask a few questions.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Dana.

CALLER: Dana?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where would I have to go to get an abortion?

CLINIC: You would have to go to a different office.

CALLER: Oh. Like where?

CLINIC: There are other places that do it, but the office in York does it.

CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t provide them in, you know, this center here. Our Redding center does, or there’s the Allentown Women’s Center, or Southern Tier in Vestal, New York.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the numbers for those?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want the number of the office in Redding?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: 1-888-843-3837.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if there’s like an age limit for that at all? To have an abortion, I mean.

CLINIC: No, there’s no age limit. But if you’re under the age of 18 — how old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You need parental consent.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have that? Well, like the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all cause like, well, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married. But like my parents can’t know because they’d be furious because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: I don’t think so, hon. I mean, you know, you can call the Allentown Women’s Center. I can give you their number. There is such a thing as a judicial bypass, but I’m not familiar how they work with that. It’s 1-877-342-5292.

CALLER: Okay. So you don’t know how the judicial bypass works or anything?

CLINIC: No, because they deal with that down there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, like say I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. The services are confidential.

CALLER: Oh. Well, like I did do a home pregnancy test. Like I did it over the weekend, and it said it was positive. Like he main reason why I’m scared is because like the last period I had was the first week in December, so.

CLINIC: Usually at-home pregnancy tests are accurate.

CALLER: They are?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay to come in there for a test?

CLINIC: You could come here for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: (Chuckle). First of all, they wouldn’t tell — it is confidential, okay? The only thing is, you know, I don’t know who you are and whatever, but the age of 22 and 14, that could possibly cause a problem.

CALLER: What kind of problem?

CLINIC: Well, it could be — hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: You could come in and have testing done. I mean, I don’t know. They would have to check with — sometimes it could be considered rape if somebody is —

CALLER: Even if like we’re in love? We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, there’s a big age difference there. All right?

CALLER: Would you have to tell on him or anything? Like no one can find out. I just can’t get in trouble. Are you there?

CLINIC: Let me tell you this. If you come in and you give that information to a counselor, if it needs to be reported, we would have to do that.

CALLER: But I can’t do that. They can’t find out at all. I mean, is there anything — What can I do?

CLINIC: First of all, you know, you could come in and have a pregnancy test done to see if you’re pregnant, and let’s start dealing with it from there.

CALLER: Is there any way like I could go to New York or whatever? Like if I would take to you guys’ place in New York, would they have to tell?

CLINIC: I’m not sure, hon. But that would be crossing a state line.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: You can call the center — the number I gave you. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, well I was just — Is it all right if I talk to you? Because you’re nice. Can I talk to you later?

CLINIC: There are several people that answer the phone. The only thing we could offer you is to be come in and have a pregnancy test done, as long as you’re five days late with your period.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Anybody that answers the phone could give you information.

CALLER: But I just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know. Like I just wanted to talk to you.

CLINIC: No, you wouldn’t be talking to me specifically, okay? All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, all right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do them here at this office, but we do them at our downtown facility called Women’s Health Services.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. Are you ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 412-562-1900.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know — Well, like do you know if they have to tell anybody like about me having an abortion?

CLINIC: Do they have to tell anyone?

CALLER: Yeah. Like my friend said you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: I don’t think so. I mean, a lot of women under 18 get terminations done. They — If you ask them there, they’ll be able to tell you how to go about doing that. I’m not exactly sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I’m pretty sure — I mean, I’m pretty sure, I’m positive you could get one without your parents knowing.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just like they can’t find out at all because like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Oh.

CALLER: So that’s why they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Right. Right. I’m pretty sure that that doesn’t have to happen. They know how. I have no idea how they, you know, how to go about doing that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either. Can you hold on just a second?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: Thank you. Yeah. You know, after you have that done you can come back here and, you know, you can get birth control through us, and it’s truly confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Because I’m just so scared of — I’m just — I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Like is it okay if my boyfriend brings me if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: If, if he what? I’m sorry.

CALLER: Like is it all right if he brings me? Bbecause I wouldn’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine.

CALLER: Would it be all right if like say he came and picked it up?

CLINIC: If he picked up your birth control?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, if you do — if you get it here, yeah. He could pick it up. All he would need is a note from you saying it was okay.

CALLER: Oh, okay, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any more questions could I talk to you?

CLINIC: Well, sure. I’m the only one here today. And I’ll be here tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Lisa.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, well, give them a call and see what they tell you about the whole thing.

CALLER: All right.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do abortions here. I can give you a number who does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you live around here?

CALLER: I live in Bakersfield.

CLINIC: Okay. You would first of all have to come here for proof of pregnancy to take with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can’t just walk in without that. So you should really come here first, and then we can give you that information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Yeah, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute.

(pause)

CLINIC: How about tomorrow afternoon?

CALLER: Well, at what time?

CLINIC: What time can you come?

CALLER: Well, I’d really have to talk to my boyfriend to see when he can get off work because he’s the only one that can bring me.

CLINIC: What time does he work ’til?

CALLER: 8 to 5.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that doesn’t work for us.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, I’d have to talk to him to see if he could get off work and bring me.

CLINIC: Because we work usually 8 to 4 Fridays and 9 to 5 the rest of the week. And he works 8 to 5.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, he could probably get Monday off.

CLINIC: Well, it just takes five minutes. There’s nobody else that can bring you, not even next week?

CALLER: Like is it all right if he takes me on like his lunch break or whatever?

CLINIC: What time does he take lunch?

CALLER: Like he can take it whenever he wants to.

CLINIC: That’s fine. How are you going to get back to Bakersfield though?

CALLER: He’ll take me.

CLINIC: Okay. How about 1:15 tomorrow?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What’s your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine Smith.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, he was going to pay cash.

CLINIC: Okay. You pay cash. Your phone?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Your phone?

CALLER: Oh. I would have to give you his like cell phone number. But he just got it, so I don’t know the number yet.

CLINIC: So you don’t have a phone.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $5.00. You need to pay that when you come. And we’ll see you at 1:15 tomorrow. If that doesn’t suit you, call us though.

CALLER: Okay. Is there like any age requirement or anything like that? Like I’ll be 14 in March. Is that still okay and everything?

CLINIC: Uhhhh, you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Bev, what is the requirement for 13-year-old for an AB?

CLINIC: Are you going to be a patient here?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll tell you that when you come.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything, right? Cause like, well, it’s just the problem is like I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married. Like we’re going to move out and live together and have a family later on. But like they just hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Right. Well, we can talk to you about that. The nurse practitioner, she can give you all the details on that. I’m not real sure.

CALLER: What do I do? Like, they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I mean Bev will go through all that with you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t want to come in there if I don’t have any — like if you guys are going to tell my parents, I don’t wanna —

CLINIC: We can’t. We can’t tell anybody. I mean, everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All we’re going to do is do a pregnancy test, and give you verification and information of where you’re gonna go. But everything here is confidential.

CALLER: But you don’t have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: We don’t have tell your parents that you’re coming. I mean, we can’t tell your parents, you know, for no reason.

CALLER: And is it all right if like my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yeah. Your boyfriend can bring you. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Does he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. He does not fill out anything here. Nope.

CALLER: Would he fill out anything anywhere else?

CLINIC: I don’t know if he needs to fill out papers there or not. I don’t think so.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out like after the pregnancy test that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Exactly. We just go by numbers here. You know, we file by numbers since everything’s confidential. We don’t like to use your name.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it like cool if I call you back with his like cell phone number?

CLINIC: We don’t need a telephone number if you can’t give us one. But if you can’t make your appointment then we’d ask if you call us.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Your appointment’s at 1:15 Friday. If that doesn’t suit him, you could call us. And we don’t have a number to reach you at.

CALLER: Okay. So when I call you back, is it all right to talk to you?

CLINIC: Well, you don’t need to call us back.

CALLER: Oh. Like what if he can’t make it, and I have to cancel?

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine. Do you want the number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 443-6549, the number you just called.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just call us on that number if you want to make another time.

CALLER: Okay. So like if I have any other questions, is it all right to talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: The nurse practitioner’s name is Bev.

CALLER: Bev? All right. Okay. But I couldn’t talk to you again?

CLINIC: That’s fine. My name is Julie.

CLINIC: Hello, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering like — Well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t, but we can provide information about where to go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. You’re interested in that?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Who are you?

CLINIC: I’m a counselor.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I was just wanting to know about like abortions and everything.

CLINIC: Okay. What about it?

CALLER: Well, like do you have to be a specific age for that?

CLINIC: In Pennsylvania there is a parental consent under the age of 18.

CALLER: Oh. Well, like I’ll be 14 in March. But is there any way you don’t have to tell my parents? Because like I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Well —

CALLER: It’s just like the problem is my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Well, you know the thing is, I would still talk to your parents. We do encourage parental involvement, okay?

CALLER: But there’s not any way they can find out. I would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Well, the only other thing you can do is through the court. If you get a court release on that, then you can go without parental notification.

CALLER: I don’t understand. What do you mean?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you would have to go through the court system. Boy, I’m trying to think of — I don’t even — I’m trying to think how you would go about that. Probably —

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Do you know how they go through that, through that court system? Yeah, okay.

CLINIC: You can probably call — I think it’s probably through legal aid or something. Probably through them you can find out. Either that or there’s —

CALLER: So like I have to get a lawyer?

CLINIC: You could go to New Jersey or you could go to another state that doesn’t require — but Pennsylvania does require parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Is it all right if my boyfriend takes me?

CLINIC: No. It has to be a parent.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It has to be one parent that has to give their consent.

CALLER: Like if I went to a different state would my boyfriend be able to take me?

CLINIC: Well, I guess he’d be able to take you. It would be a problem if you went someplace else, you know, as far as — First of all, did you have a pregnancy test taken yet?

CALLER: I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, they won’t accept that, okay? So you have to have a doctor’s pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So what you can do is you can come in here. We can do a pregnancy test; then we can give you all the information.

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody. Everything’s confidential here.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No, no, no, no. We don’t do anything. We don’t get involved in people’s business, okay? What we would do is do your pregnancy test, like I said. And we go over all the options with you. And whatever option you choose, then we’d refer you for that option. And if you decided to terminate, then sure we could give you all the information.

CALLER: Okay. If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Sure. We do birth control. But we would set you up for an appointment. Because there’s a chance that you still could be pregnant, like you had unprotected in the last couple weeks, because our tests wouldn’t show two weeks and back. Okay? I mean, within the last two weeks, it goes from two weeks and back. So if you had unprotected intercourse in the last two weeks, then what you have to do is come back in two weeks. Again, if the test today was negative, you’d come back in two weeks and then we’d do another test. But we could set you up — if you came in for a pregnancy test that was negative, we can set you up for an exam appointment also. So if the test is negative again, then we can have you examined and all for birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. Everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Well, like the main reason I’m scared is like the last period I had was the first week in December.

CLINIC: And there’s a chance — did you not use condoms at any time?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. So there is a chance. So I think what you should do is just come on in, and let’s do the pregnancy test. And let’s start out there and see how things are, okay? Now if you wanted to come in for one today, we do them from —

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Well, it’s not by appointment; you just walk in. I’ll just give you the times, okay? It’s today from 1 to 4:30 and tomorrow from 9 to 1.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right like if I call you back if I had any more questions?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. No problem, hon.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Carol.

CALLER: Carol? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
