CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we do not.
CALLER: Do you know anywhere that would?
CLINIC: Yeah. We have — if you come in and have a positive pregnancy test, we give you a list of places to go.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And there’s a place in Pittsburgh that’s like — we’re an affiliate of that place.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But we don’t do them here.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No? Okay. Because like my parents can’t find out at all because, well the problem is like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and move out, but they hate him because they think that he’s too old for me, so.
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: (silence) The best I can do right now is if you want to come in and have a pregnancy test, we can do that here.
CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Well, what if like I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: We sure do.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Okay. Like, well the main reason why I’m worried about it is because like my last period was like the first week in December, so I’m just — I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Do you want to come in today for a test?
CALLER: Well, I can’t come in today. I have to get my boyfriend to bring me and he’s at work.
CLINIC: What time does he get off work?
CALLER: He gets off at 5:00.
CLINIC: We’re here until 6:00. Can you be here at 5:30?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to see, but I think so, maybe.
CLINIC: Okay. Try to get here at 5:30.
CALLER: All right. Is it all right if like I think of any more questions to call you back?
CLINIC: Yeah. What you need to do is pee in a cup though and bring it in with you.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: First of December. Even if you don’t bring it, you’ll probably be able to pee in a cup here because it would have been long enough. Our test should pick it up.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All righty?
CALLER: Okay. And you guys like wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if like my boyfriend brings me and everything?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Be here for 5:30, no later, because we leave at 6:00.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: Okay. So is it all right if I call you back and ask you any more questions if I have any?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Okay. What was your name?
CLINIC: Michelle.
CALLER: Michelle?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay. Thanks.
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

RECORDING: You have reached Planned Parenthood of Locus Tree Center. Today, Thursday, February 14, we will be seeing walk-in pregnancy tests and emergency contraception visits from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Supplies from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you would like to speak to someone or make an appointment, please press 4 now. Thank you. (dial sound.) Please hold while I try that extension.
CLINIC: How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Our surgical center does.
CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?
CLINIC: Well, you’d have to talk to them. Have you had a confirmed pregnancy test from a doctor’s office or clinic?
CALLER: No. I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, you would first have to have a confirmed pregnancy test from a doctor’s office or clinic. And if like you came into one of our centers we would give you a referral, and they have some of the prices on there, and then you could just give them a call to set up an appointment.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age requirement for that?
CLINIC: Like if you’re under 18, if you wanted to have a procedure, there’s two ways to go about it. You’d either have to get parental consent or you could go through what’s called a judicial bypass. I mean, that’s if you’re under 18.
CALLER: Well, like I’ll be 14 in March. What’s the judicial bypass?
CLINIC: What that is is you go to this lady, her name’s Barbara Bailey. And she, you come and stand in front of a judge and say, okay, I’m old enough to make my own decisions, and you get like a piece of paper and say your parents don’t have to know.
CALLER: What if he doesn’t think that I am old enough?
CLINIC: No. They — I mean, that’s what that service is there for.
CALLER: Okay. So does he ever —
CLINIC: I don’t know. See, that’s a question for the lady that runs that program. So, I mean, if you wanted to come in today we could give you the, you know, pregnancy test to confirm it, and we could go over all of that with you in person.
CALLER: Do you know how much I’d have to pay her for that?
CLINIC: I don’t think there is a fee for her. There’s no fee. You said you’re 13?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, there’s no charge for the pregnancy test if you come in here either.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just — the reason why I can’t tell my parents is because like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they just can’t find out.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, they don’t — I mean, like everything here is confidential. So like I said, if you want to come in today you can come in —
CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker) : Up until what time?
CLINIC: — up until 3:00. If you can get here by 3:00, you can come in and we can do a pregnancy test for you.
CALLER: Okay. Would you guys be able to do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do. Um-hum. You’d be offered like birth control following your procedure. So like if you wanted depo or if you wanted the pill, we’d be able to give that to you as well.
CALLER: Okay. And does anybody have to know about the birth control?
CLINIC: Does anybody have to know?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: No. Um-um. Only you.
CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t ask anything about him or anything?
CLINIC: No. Um-um.
CALLER: All right. Well —
CLINIC: Hold on one second. Sorry. Go ahead.
CALLER: Well, like — so if I talk to him later to make an appointment — Like I have to figure out when he can get off work to take me, but is it all right if I call you back?
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. We’re here until 5:00 on the phones.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Tiffany.
CALLER: Tiffany?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Hello, Philadelphia Women Center. Laura speaking. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: How far are you in your pregnancy?
CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since like January 3rd.
CLINIC: Our fees go by gestational sizing.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Did you do a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for a while. I’m real scared.
CLINIC: Okay. You need to do a pregnancy test first to see if you pregnant because sometimes a missed period can be other things.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you guys do that there?
CLINIC: We have walk-ins.
CALLER: What time?
CLINIC: You have to be here by 1:30.
CALLER: Today?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Okay. Do you do it like any other day?
CLINIC: Any day between — I’d say the best time to come is — Okay, on like procedure days it’s 12 to 1:30, and on any other days, like Wednesday or Thursday, come between 8 and 1:30.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like my friend told me that since I’m going to be like 14 later on this month, that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. He’s not your guardian.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? You can go by judicial bypass.
CALLER: What is that?
CLINIC: When you go into a lawyer. We give you a lawyer’s name. She’ll take you in front of a judge. The judge will give you consent to do your own —
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: That’s free.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Okay. But does a judge ever say no?
CLINIC: I haven’t heard him say no.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So I just come in there and get a pregnancy test. And if it’s positive, go to the judge?
CLINIC: No. You have to make an appointment and have all that done before you go — no, you don’t go to the judge. They give you a lawyer’s name.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Tell them you want to go by judicial bypass because you don’t want your parent to know.
CALLER: Right.
CLINIC: Okay? You have to make an appointment first, then they do all that, and give you a phone number to call.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control that day?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: You need to go to a free clinic like Planned Parenthood Teen Clinic. They have a teen clinic.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No!
CALLER: Oh, okay. So if I came in there for a pregnancy test, would anybody have to know I was there?
CLINIC: No, unless you tell them.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Anywhere like that, they’re not suppose to tell your parent. You know, even if you went to Planned Parenthood, they wouldn’t tell.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to find out about us. Would you guys have to tell anybody about us?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just he said that he would pay for everything. Would he have to sign any papers or anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if I was on birth control, like say —
CLINIC: The only paper he would sign would be an escort paper.
CALLER: A what?
CLINIC: Escort.
CALLER: Okay. What does that mean?
CLINIC: That he’s responsible for taking you home because they’re going to give you anesthesia.
CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to give that to anybody else?
CLINIC: It doesn’t go off your chart. All this is confidential. Everything stays in the chart.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: The only way anybody outside finds out unless you go tell.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?
CLINIC: We don’t tell about birth control.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: Nobody’s suppose to tell. That’s confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Unless you tell. The only way your parents are gonna find out is unless you slip up and leave it around for them to see.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? They don’t call houses and tell them anything, unless you tell one of your friends, and they might tell.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So you keep that to yourself.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay then.
CALLER: What was your name again?
(clinic hangs up)
CALLER: Are you there?
