CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know anyone that would?

CLINIC: First you would have to get like a positive pregnancy test. Have you done that yet?

CALLER: Well, I had a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: You would have to get proof of pregnancy from like a Planned Parenthood, which we can do that for you. And then we would refer you out. We would give you names and phone numbers of places that do the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age requirement for that or anything? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, there would not be — the pregnancy test would be free for you. But I’m sure you are going to have to pay for the abortion, and I don’t know — wherever you decide to go, they’ll give you a price for that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend will take care of it. He’s got a job. He’s 22 and everything.

CLINIC: Okay. But the pregnancy test will be free for you.

CALLER: Okay. Is there an age requirement for abortions?

CLINIC: I know in the state of Pennsylvania — do you live in Pennsylvania?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. You would have to have parental permission.

CALLER: Is there any way around that? Like I can’t tell my parents because they absolutely hate my boyfriend and everything. Like they can’t find out at all. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: In the state of Pennsylvania, you would definitely need parental consent.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: If you went outside of Pennsylvania — you can go to New Jersey. I know they don’t need parental consent, but that’s your decision. We can give you that information when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like say after the pregnancy test that you guys do, if you find out I wasn’t pregnant, do you have a birth control program or anything?

CLINIC: If you find out that you’re not pregnant, we can set up an appointment for you to become a family planning patient. You can get on birth control, you know, give you all your options. So it’s basically up to you whatever you decide to do.

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell anybody about this?

CLINIC: Oh, no. It’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So if my boyfriend comes with me, it’s all okay and everything?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. That’s fine.

CALLER: Would he have to fill out any paperwork?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s all about you, when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, alright. He’s like already got a little boy, so he knows about birth control. So it would just be cool if he could come and be there with me.

CLINIC: All they would do here is the pregnancy test, like I said. We don’t do the abortions here. Like I said, we would refer you out.

CALLER: Well, like for birth control I mean.

CLINIC: Right. But you’d have to make sure you’re not pregnant first.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys don’t have to tell anyone about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Everything you say here is confidential. You know, we would advise you that — he’s 22, like you said, and you’re 14. No one would find out. That’s the bottom line.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Unless he’s like physically hurting you or something.

CALLER: No. We’re in love, and we’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So like, no.

CLINIC: Okay. No one will find out, no. That’s not an issue here.

CALLER: Okay. Where in New Jersey would it be?

CLINIC: When you come in, like I said, if we do find out that you do have a positive pregnancy test and you’re choosing abortion, we can give you a sheet that we have of all places in New Jersey that do abortions. And you would choose from that sheet where you wanted to go.

CALLER: When could I be able to come in?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test is a walk-in service. You can come in any time during the times that we’re open.

CALLER: Do I have to give my name or anything then?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you choose not to give your correct name, that’s your decision. But we encourage you to give your correct name.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just can’t let my parents know at all. I just can’t get in trouble. I don’t know what they would do if they found out about all this.

CLINIC: No, it’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: All right. Okay. If I thought up any more questions, can I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Anyone here can help you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I like you. You’re nice. Is it okay if I call you?

CLINIC: I can’t guarantee that I’m going to answer the phone.

CALLER: Oh. Well, can I ask for you. Like what was your name?

CLINIC: I don’t like to give my name out. But anyone here is qualified to help you. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t here in the Hanover office. It would be through our York office. Would you like their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The one I’m actually going to have you call for that particular service is 1-800-498-6573.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask a few questions really?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that if I was going to have an abortion, you guys have to tell my parents. Is that true?

CLINIC: Well, I — I’m not really clear on that. I just know that if you’re under 18 you do have to have informed consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll tell you what. The best thing to do is call that 800 number, because whoever answers that line is going to have all the correct, you know, most up-to-date information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: About all your questions.

CALLER: Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And like no one would have to know about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like it’s just the reason why my parents can’t find out is because like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they can’t find out at all because they hate him. They think he’s too old.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. Yeah — like I said, I think the best thing would be to call the 800 number, and they can answer that much better than I.

CALLER: Well, like if I was getting birth control it would be all right and everything, or–

CLINIC: Um-hum. Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay, and you wouldn’t — so you wouldn’t —

CLINIC: You don’t need parental consent or no contact to the parents for birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if he brings me and everything?

CLINIC: We’d have to make an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, well —

CLINIC: Yeah, because to get on birth control pills you have to have an exam and everything, a pelvic exam and a pap smear.

CALLER: Oh. Is — is it — can you guys do like a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And do I have to have an appointment for that?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it okay if I call my boyfriend and then call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I just need to find out when he can get off work to take me, but what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Jodie.

CALLER: Jodie?

CLINIC: And if you want to just make an appointment for a pregnancy test, it’s probably going to be some time later next week. But if you want to make an appointment for an exam and everything it is going to be about two to three weeks. We are really booked this time of year.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s something to keep in mind when you find out when he can get off work.

CALLER: So should I call the York office, or if you guys are real busy?

CLINIC: Well, that’s up to you. They may be able to get you in sooner. I’m not sure what their schedule is like.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Hillcrest. Look in the Yellow Pages for Hillcrest.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: You’ve got to have somebody 18 or older to go with you, um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, like if my boyfriend goes? He’s 22?

CLINIC: Okay. She can take you without your parents knowing.

CALLER: Okay. So like do you have to be a specific age or anything to have an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: In March? And you’re about to have an abortion?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You can bring the 22-year-old with you, and she can sign a consent form for that.

CALLER: It’s a he. It’s my boyfriend.

CLINIC: Oh. It’s a he? Your boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh, no. You ain’t gonna tell your mother, are you?

CALLER: No, I can’t.

CLINIC: Oh, I would think not. Okay. He can go with you and sign it off because he is over 18.

CALLER: Yeah, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like do you guys do birth control there or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We do birth control pills here.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell anybody either. It’s confidential. The person that tells is you.

CALLER: Okay. Like I’d be able to send my boyfriend to come get it?

CLINIC: You have to become one of our patients first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Once you become one of our patients, then you can put him down that he can pick up your pills.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Call Hillcrest now.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if I talk to him, and I have some more questions, is it all right to call you back?

CLINIC: Sure you can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Tanya.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Hillcrest.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: If you’re 12 weeks or under it’s $310.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know if you are or not?

CLINIC: Well, when was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Yeah, you’re about nine weeks or so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And that’s under 12. So it would be $310.

CALLER: $310?

CLINIC: Yeah. Do you know your blood type?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if it’s negative — we’ll draw your blood here. If it’s negative, that’s an additional 50.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — Like I’m going to be like 14 in March. I’ll be 14 on the 20th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope, hon. Not here in the state of Pennsylvania. If you want to go — I have a number — well, hold on one second.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, hon. I can give you the number to our other clinic, and over there you don’t have to have to parental consent. But it’s about an hour and 15 minutes from Harrisburg.

CALLER: Where is it?

CLINIC: It’s in Maryland.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Carlisle.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay. So you don’t want to tell your parents?

CALLER: Right. I can’t tell them at all. I mean, they know my boyfriend and they know we’re going out, but they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Well, I can give you the number to our other clinic. That’s about all I can do for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-260-2464.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I was pregnant?

CLINIC: You didn’t take the test yet?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period in a long time.

CLINIC: Okay. What you should do, hon, is probably go — I know there’s a Planned Parenthood in Carlisle.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah. And they do free pregnancy tests there. So before you make any phone calls, why don’t you just go ahead and do that so you don’t have to pay for anything. Just go in there. I think they’re probably open now. It’s up on Brookwood (sp) Avenue, up by Nails and Friendly’s and all that. And give them a call; it’s in the phone book. A matter of fact, I’ll just give you the number. Okay, let’s see.

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me to go to you guys, that you were better.

CLINIC: They’re just going to do a pregnancy test, this place here, so that way you can at least be sure.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because if you’re not pregnant, you don’t have to go anywhere and do anything.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Planned Parenthood won’t tell your parents for birth control, do they?

CLINIC: No. You can go to the same place where I’m giving you the number. Say your pregnancy test is negative, they will give you birth control, and your parents do not have to know.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You have a pen?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. 243-0515.

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure they wouldn’t tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Oh yeah, I’m positive.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay then.

CALLER: So if it turned out that I was pregnant, could I call and ask you questions before I call the other place? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. Anita.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: But if I came to you, would I have to tell anybody to come to you?

CLINIC: If you come here — if you go anywhere in the state of Pennsylvania you’re going to have to inform your parents, anywhere in the state. That’s why I was going to give you the number to our clinic in Maryland. You said your boyfriend’s 22, so he should be able to drive.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Does he have a car?

CALLER: Yeah, he has a car.

CLINIC: Okay. Then he could get you there then.

CALLER: But if I came to you for like a pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: Oh, no, not if you just come in for a pregnancy test. Can you get here today?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But what time?

CLINIC: Because if you come here today I’ll do it for you, before 5:00. By 4:30 you should be here, and I’ll do it for you, okay?

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. I don’t have to tell anybody anything. You just come in here, and I’ll give you a test, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

(ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Where or what city are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in White Haven.

CLINIC: White Haven? The closet place to you would probably be the Allentown Women’s Center.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have a pen handy?

CALLER: Yeah, I got one now.

CLINIC: Okay, and it writes? Huh? Usually I have one that doesn’t write or a pencil and the point’s broke. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, yeah, well it’s working.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-372-8500. Now after you have the termination done, you can either go back to Allentown and have follow-up or you could come to our office —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — and have follow-up and also, you know, pick a method of birth control at the time. Also, when you call the Allentown Women’s Center they’re going to talk to you about the state mandated information. You can either go to Allentown and have that done there and then make another trip back to have the termination done, or you can come to our office and at a fee of $25 you can watch the doctor by way of videotape and that will save you that extra trip to Allentown.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like my main question is, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay, yeah. In the state of Pennsylvania, if you are under 18 you do have to have a parent. If you go out of state, if you go to New York or New Jersey you don’t have to. But in the state of Pennsylvania you do.

CALLER: It’s just, I can’t tell my parents at all because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married, and we love each other. But like if they found out — they hate him because they think that he’s too old for me. But it’s just they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: So —

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s the only information I can give you is that in the state of Pennsylvania if you’re under 18 a parent does have to know. You have to have a parent’s consent. A parent has to be with you to have the termination done.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So there wouldn’t be any way to stay in Pennsylvania —

CLINIC: Not in the state of Pennsylvania you couldn’t have it done on your own, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if — like if I came in there and you guys — you guys do pregnancy tests, right?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Right. You don’t have to — no. Nobody would have to know that you’re coming in here for an exam and to have birth control, no.

CALLER: Okay. Does anybody have to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So, well, is it all right —

CLINIC: You’re not being raped or abused, correct?

CALLER: Yeah, right. We’re in love.

CLINIC: Then we don’t need to know anything about your personal life.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that would be perfectly fine.

CALLER: And it’s all right like if my boyfriend comes with me?

CLINIC: Sure. You know, he could sit in the waiting room. We like to talk to you by yourself, and you’re just going to fill out paperwork and have an exam, you know, but —

CALLER: Would he have to fill out any paperwork?

CLINIC: No, he don’t have to do anything. He doesn’t even have to be with you.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You don’t know if you definitely are pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy, a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it said it was positive.

CLINIC: It came out positive. What kind of test was it?

CALLER: It was — my girlfriend gave it to me, like.

CLINIC: You don’t know the brand?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: I can also tell you that home tests sometimes are highly inaccurate. We have people that come in and get one result from a home test, different result from our tests.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So you may want to consider coming in here. There would be no charge for you to get a pregnancy test done here.

CALLER: So maybe I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: There’s always that chance.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you late with the period?

CALLER: Well, yeah, like my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s, you know, one thing that would make you think you were. So, you know, all I could tell you is to come in and get a pregnancy test. We’ll give you paperwork and then you take it in whichever direction you’d like.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Is it okay if I thought of another question that I could ask you?

CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. Call us back. That’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay. Could I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. I’ll be answering the phone.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: My name is Judy. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Take care.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.
