CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. What we can do is refer you to our Planned Parenthood in Redding that does terminations.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Sure. The Redding Planned Parenthood phone number is 610-376-8061. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. There is a parental notification law in the state of Pennsylvania, that you would need to discuss with your parents —

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents. They can’t find out. Like the problem is my boyfriend is 22. We’re going to get married and everything, but like they hate him because they think that he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. But there is a parental notification in the state of Pennsylvania, if you want to stay in the state of Pennsylvania for a termination.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: You can go to court, or the other thing is that you can go out of state to a patient site.

CALLER: If I went to court, would I have to pay for a lawyer and everything?

CLINIC: What you would do is call — you can call the Redding Planned Parenthood and ask them to walk you through the steps that are necessary for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, the main reason I’m calling, like my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So that’s why — I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Right. Hold on a second. Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and I think I did it right.

CLINIC: All right. Give me an exact date. Hold on. When was the exact date of your last period?

CALLER: I’m not real sure. I know it was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. According to that time period and according to the information you’re giving me, you’re ready to start your 12th week. Terminations can be done up to 14 weeks from your last period.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You really need to contact them and get this moving as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. But you don’t think they’d have to tell anybody there?

CLINIC: At the Redding Planned Parenthood?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You would still need parental consent or get a court — information. And they can tell you how to go about doing that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if like say that I wasn’t pregnant or whatever, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Right. Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I did the home pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that pretty much means that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. Alright. Well, like if —

CLINIC: What you can do if you’re really confused, you can walk in during our pregnancy test hours and meet with a counselor who could help you, you know, talk to you about some of these things.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Here we’re confidential. We wouldn’t have to tell anybody. You can obtain pregnancy testing without parental consent, but if you do want a termination, that’s when you need help.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if I have a couple more questions, if I can call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Or walk in so we can run the test and then talk to you face to face.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Patty.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Under 12 weeks it’s $350 to be awake, $370 to be awake with the medication to keep you relaxed, and $450 to be asleep. What’s your date of birth?

CALLER: March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Okay. And how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you told a parent yet?

CALLER: No, I can’t. That was one of my other questions. Like I can’t tell them at all. They can’t find out. It’s just my boyfriend’s 22. Would he be okay to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Actually, either you’re going to need to tell your parents or we could do something called judicial bypass. Let me put you on the line with our head counselor that’s in charge of that, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. Hold on.

(pause)

RECORDING: We know that coping with an unplanned pregnancy is complicated. AWC has non-judgmental counselors who listen and can help you sort through feelings, discuss your concerns, clarify your decision, and ease your anxiety. Non-directive options counseling, pre-abortion counseling, and post-abortion counseling are offered at no charge for patients, parents and partners. This is a delicate issue, so we know that finding the right healthcare provider is very important. Our highly qualified staff is caring and supportive providing a comfortable atmosphere. The Allentown Women’s Center performs abortions prior to 16 weeks of pregnancy using either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Non-surgical or medical abortions using medication are performed to seven weeks of pregnancy. Pregnancy termination at AWC —

CLINIC: Alicia (sp). Is Alicia or is it —

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: Licia, just with an “L”?

CALLER: No, just Lisa.

CLINIC: Oh, Lisa, as in the Simpsons Lisa. (chuckles)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me get your phone number. Is there somewhere where I can have — her name’s Tia. I’ll have her give you a call back.

CALLER: I can’t do that. I’m at my friend’s house, and her mom would answer the phone, and I will get in trouble.

CLINIC: For getting a phone call (chuckles)?

CALLER: Well, I’m at my friend’s house.

CLINIC: She won’t say who — Like she’ll just say hi, this is Tia. Like she won’t say from the Women’s Center.

CALLER: Is it okay if I just call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. What I’ll do is let her know so that she can have like everything together that she needs to tell you. Okay?

CALLER: When should I call her?

CLINIC: I would say — She just went into a meeting with our boss. If you want to give a call back in like half an hour.

CALLER: Okay. What was her name?

CLINIC: Her name is Tia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And you can call the same number you did, and just when it says if you know the extension, it’s extension number 12.

CALLER: Twelve? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if — Well, do you guys actually do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Did you take a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Perryville.

CLINIC: Perryville?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh, I know where that is. I know in Lehighton there’s a Family Planning clinic. They might do them for free there.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah. I know it’s Lehighton. And I also think — I know there’s one in Allentown, but pretty much any over-the-counter, like if you go to the drug store like Thrift Drug or Eckerds up there, those are pretty much the same test as you would get at like a clinic.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah. Like a EPT or a Clear Blue easy, like a test like that would be just as accurate.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if ended up that I wasn’t pregnant after I took one of those, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Here, absolutely. Or your other option will be Planned Parenthood. You get birth control for free up till you’re 18 years old.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, not at all. Not at all. And your closest Planned Parenthood would be Allentown.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. So run a test. If you need us, call us back, or if you want to call and just talk to Tia, you can do that too. And like I said, she’ll probably be back in her office around quarter after 4.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would they have to find out about us if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: You mean like your family or anybody?

CALLER: Just anybody.

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I don’t think so.

CALLER: Because we don’t want like his ex-wife to know either.

CLINIC: You don’t want what?

CALLER: We don’t want this ex-wife to know either.

CLINIC: No. I mean, everything that goes on between you and your gynecologist is strictly between you and your gynecologist, as far as if you’re on birth control or anything like that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright. Well, so —

CLINIC: Give us a call back to talk at quarter after 4. She should be back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Kristen.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. If you need anything, give me a call.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Hello. Dr. Stein’s office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling because my friend told me to call you guys about getting an abortion there.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know how much it cost to do that?

CLINIC: How far pregnant are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since like January 3rd.

CLINIC: January?

CALLER: January 3rd, yeah.

CLINIC: And that was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re in like the nine-week range if that was your last period.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Dr. Stein does the procedure up to 12 weeks.

CALLER: All right. Well, how much would it cost then?

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: So you’re not using insurance.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: $425.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know also — Like my friend said that since, well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: It’s a state law. You have to have a parent come with you for counseling.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: The only way around that is with a court order.

CALLER: What do I do for that?

CLINIC: You go before a judge to get a court order.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: What? To go to court?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I have no idea. But it would take a long time, and you might be too far by the time you get that done.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t tell my parents at all. Is that the only way not to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yes. It’s a state law. Hold on a minute.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: You can go to New Jersey.

CALLER: I could go to New Jersey. And that’s all right there?

CLINIC: They don’t have the same laws.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Hold on a minute, and I’ll give you a number.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: 1-800-240-6730. That’s South Jersey Women’s Center, and it’s in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for the pregnancy test though just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: No. You can buy one over the counter.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We do the same kind that they have.

CALLER: So they’re usually right then?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I go there and get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to go through all this anymore, so.

CLINIC: I don’t blame you. It’s not a pleasant thing.

CALLER: So I could just take a pregnancy test from the store?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. So if I wasn’t pregnant, could I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Laney (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And would my boyfriend be able to come in with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: He just doesn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks

CLINIC: All right. Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Could you hold, please?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: If we do what? I’m sorry.

CALLER: Abortions?

CLINIC: Bushings?

CALLER: Like an abortion?

CLINIC: Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t understand. Are you on a cell phone?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. I was just wondering why it sounded like a little crackle. Yeah, at the Warminster Office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And would you like to give them a call?

CALLER: Yeah. What’s their phone number?

CLINIC: I got it right here. 215-957-7980.

CALLER: 7980?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And what you’ll need to do is, if you’re closer — do you live close — like at the Bentel Maria (ph)?

CALLER: I live in Phoenixville.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Then you’re closer to — Whichever Planned Parenthood you’re closest to, you would have to do a compliance visit and then wait. There’s a 24-hour waiting period in the state of Pennsylvania for the procedure.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if I come there because like I just don’t want anyone to see me.

CLINIC: To? You mean the Warminster office?

CALLER: Huh? To where you’re at.

CLINIC: You can come to any Planned Parenthood for the counseling.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know, and then take the pregnancy test. They determine how long you’re pregnant, so on and so forth.

CALLER: Do you know if there’s like an age requirement for being — or having an abortion? Because like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. I think that that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s completely anonymous.

CALLER: It’s just I can’t tell my parents at all because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re going to get married and we’re in love, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so.

CLINIC: I see, yeah. No, that should not be a problem at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And, but I would call the Warminster office if you have any questions about the procedure itself.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Would it be okay if my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Because he’d be the only way that I could get there, so.

CLINIC: Yes. That’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back? Like I have to ask him like a question but —

CLINIC: Well, if you’re coming in for a pregnancy test, you don’t need an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You just come in, have the pregnancy test done, and then they’ll, you know, give you the information that you would need if you decide that if you are pregnant and you should decide to do the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Take it from there.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I talk to you later? It’s just —

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If I could talk to my mom like I can talk to you it would be — my life would be so much easier. But like what was your name?

CLINIC: Terry.

CALLER: Terry?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. Not at this center.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: The Allentown Women’s Center.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Sure. 264-5657.

CALLER: 5657?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend actually told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: If you’re 17 or under, it’s a Pennsylvania state law. So if you get a termination anywhere in Pennsylvania, yes, you need parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, well, like — okay. Because I’ll be 14 in March. But is there any way that my parents don’t have to know at all?

CLINIC: Oh, you’ll be 14 in March.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Not in Pennsylvania. If you would go to New York and New Jersey they don’t require parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just they can’t tell my parents at all because like — well, my boyfriend is 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so. Like —

CLINIC: Well, he probably is, in all honesty. That’s a big age gap. But that’s not my —

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Well, you’re only 13. You’re still very, very young. But that’s beside the point. That’s a whole other issue, you know, that you have to deal with and really think about. What you need to deal with right now is the pregnancy, and if you do go in Pennsylvania you have to have parental consent. So your only option would really be to go to New York or New Jersey.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I get like a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Yes. You can come in, take a pregnancy test, and then we can give you referrals for out of state.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like I’m just worried that I am pregnant because like my last period was like the first week in December, so —

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. Yeah. Then definitely come in to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about —

CLINIC: No, we don’t here. No. No, everything here is confidential because we don’t do the terminations.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But like I said, anywhere you go in Pennsylvania for a termination you do need parental consent. You would need to go out of state.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend brings me for the test?

CLINIC: Yes, the counselor will talk to you alone, but he can bring you because you obviously can’t drive. But yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just he’s the only one that would be able to bring me, so.

CLINIC: Right, because he’s the only one that knows, sure.

CALLER: But you guys don’t have to tell anybody about him or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. Not here. Everything’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. If like I ended up not being pregnant, do you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Absolutely.

CALLER: Okay, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Nope. No, we wouldn’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if I have any other questions to call you back?

CLINIC: Sure, no problem.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Marissa.

CALLER: Okay.
