CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just really worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: You want to come in and take a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: You can do that.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? We do them on a walk-in basis between 9:00 and 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like it’s just, the thing is, I’ll be 14 next month. And my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay. Just come in and take a pregnancy test, and we’re not required to tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so if he was there to — like he said he would pay for everything, but would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. That’s up to them down there.

CALLER: Well, like for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. It’s your signature.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: You come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how soon would you be able to tell me if I was pregnant or not?

CLINIC: When you come in and do the urine test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: We need to set up an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, well, how long does it take for that?

CLINIC: We could get you in tomorrow morning for an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just, I don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, I just have a lot of questions. I can’t really think of right now. Could I call you back if I thought up something? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Tammy, but you need to talk to a counselor. The only thing I could suggest to do is probably to come in and take a pregnancy test. They can go over your questions, and then they can if you’re not, set you up with an appointment to get you started on birth control.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Well, if I had to get an abortion, would I have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. You’d have to talk to them down there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Where they do it.

CALLER: So what was the number for the other place?

CLINIC: Well, I need to know how far along you are. There’s different numbers for — it’s just depending on how far along you are. I would suggest that you come in and take a pregnancy test and then —

CALLER: Well, my last period was like December 26.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, you’re about 9 weeks according to our — so I can give you some phone numbers.

CALLER: So what does that — okay. Well, what does that mean if I’m 9 weeks?

CLINIC: 9 weeks pregnant according to your last period.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? They’re all in Ashland.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 488-3221. 482-6060. 482-5853. 482-3327.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You don’t want to come in and take one here?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I just need to call my boyfriend to see when he can get the time off to bring me, but.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So what were your hours again?

CLINIC: Our walk-in hours are from 9:00 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Tomorrow too?

CLINIC: Tomorrow too.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: We do have some resources. We ask that you come in and pick up a packet.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: It’s just — I was — I’m just worried about all this because like well — I’ll be 14 years old next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we — have you had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No. Okay —

CALLER: I just haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. So what you would want to do is come in and have the pregnancy test with us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It is completely confidential. I am going to suggest to you that you do not say, when you come, how old your boyfriend is.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You don’t have him come with you because we would have to report that.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because it’s illegal.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: For him to be having sexual relationship with you. It’s illegal.

CALLER: But if he doesn’t come in you don’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Do not say to anyone here how old your boyfriend is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you say that, then we’ll have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So come in and have a pregnancy test, and if it’s positive then we will talk to you about what your options are, and we’ll give you information, you know, whatever information you might need.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if it wasn’t positive? Could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes, you could.

CALLER: I just don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. You know, I think you’re very wise.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just — the thing is, I can’t drive. I don’t know how I would get there to pick up the birth control, or whatever.

CLINIC: Well, get here however you can. Just don’t bring your boyfriend in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And don’t say anything.

CALLER: Okay. But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just — I have a lot of questions and I don’t — I just don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yeah. I think the best place to start is here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: To give you a pregnancy test and get you set up on some birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are you guys going to be open tomorrow? Because I don’t know if I can find a ride tonight.

CLINIC: Tomorrow our walk-in hours are from 1:00 to 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay Well, if I had a problem could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sorra (sp).

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: All Women’s Health Services. Can you hold please?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Actually, they do. It’s not like it’s a pelvic exam, there’s no speculum or anything, but it’s just with manual, like finger —

CALLER: What do you mean? I just was put on hold.

CLINIC: Have you ever — I’m sorry?

CALLER: I was just put on hold.

CLINIC: (Unclear).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It all depends on how far along you are and what your income is.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, when was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd? Okay. Well, you’re under 12 weeks which is really our only criteria. Do you make under or over 30,000 a year?

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job. I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: Or later this month.

CLINIC: Then it would be 350.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like the thing is, my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents, and I can’t let them know. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, unfortunately you have to be 15.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: If you’re under 15, then your parents have to be informed.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell them?

CLINIC: No, it’s a law that we have to have.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is that not old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Well, he’s not your guardian though.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Your parent or guardian has to sign.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you think that there would be any way that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Yeah. I would recommend that you get a pregnancy test done.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for that?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody about that if I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: The pregnancy test is free.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You would have to set up an appointment to do that. So you’d have to become a patient here, and then you would talk to a practitioner, and they could give you a prescription for birth control here.

CALLER: Okay. But does anybody have to know if I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: Not if you’re going to pay for it. I mean, if you’re going to pay for it with insurance, there’s a possibility that your parents may —

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything, so. But is it all right if he’s there with me though?

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah, he can be here with you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want anyone to find out about us. Would you have to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: No. Well, can you hold on for one second please?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: That’s a long wait. Now, are you still there?

CALLER: I’m here.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You can come in for an appointment, and we wouldn’t need to tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to make an appointment for a pregnancy screening?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend. Could I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, you can talk to anybody who is on the phone.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what time are you guys normally open?

CLINIC: We’re open for 9 to 5.

CALLER: Do you guys do the pregnancy test whenever you’re open or do you have specific hours?

CLINIC: Yeah. You would have to make an appointment to get the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But you guys do them —

CLINIC: All during the day.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. So I just have to call my boyfriend and call back. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CALLER: Well, my friend’s mom came in, and I couldn’t stay on the phone.

CLINIC: Okay. Yes, we do. We do them up to 12 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: I’m going to ask you right now. When was the first day of your last normal menstrual period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Which you are approximately nine to ten weeks right now.

CALLER: Okay. So how much would it be then?

CALLER: Is there anyplace else I could go where my parents wouldn’t have to find out?

CLINIC: Unfortunately, not here in Oregon. I’m not really sure about Washington.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (Unclear). Hold on a second. Let me look at some other numbers, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you still there?

CALLER: I’m here.
