CLINIC: Okay, and have you done a pregnancy test at a clinic yet?

CLINIC: Nope? Just a home one?
CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period since like December 26, so I’m scared.
CLINIC: Right. I guess the first step is to come in for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then we can go over, you know —
CALLER: Well, it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Actually the Oregon law states that if you’re under the age of 15, you have to have parental consent to have a surgery.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: You can come in and do the pregnancy test and stuff like that. We don’t need to inform your parents. So we could start off that way, and kind of go from there.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So is there any way not to have to tell my parents though?
CLINIC: I don’t think to have the procedure. I mean, there might be a different state that would allow it, but I doubt it.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, my parents can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if I told them.
CLINIC: Right. Well, you know a good thing is to make sure that you’re actually pregnant first.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: A pregnancy test.
CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Not if you came up for the pregnancy test. The only thing is, we couldn’t do the surgery without getting your parents consent, and wouldn’t call them and tell them. You know, and tell — I mean, we wouldn’t call them and tell them. We just couldn’t do the surgery unless they were, they signed the consent form.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: But you can come in for a pregnancy test and to talk to us and stuff without your parents’ knowledge.
CALLER: Do you think like anybody else could do it without my parents knowing?
CLINIC: Nobody in Oregon can.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: I mean, it’s Oregon state law.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So. But —
CALLER: Well, what about California?
CLINIC: You know, I’m not sure. I don’t — you know. That would be something you’d have to call someplace there and find out what their state law says.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yep, and we wouldn’t have to tell your parents if you wanted birth control.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yep.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, what time do you normally do the pregnancy tests?
CLINIC: You know, you could come in. If you wanted to come in today you could come in until about 5:15 or tomorrow between 9:00 and 4:30.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see, but if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Joanna.
CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Sure, absolutely. Do you have a pen ready?

CLINIC: Okay. We have — are you looking just in Springfield, or —
CALLER: Well, around Eugene actually.
CLINIC: Around Eugene okay?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: There is 342-5940, and that’s All Women’s Health Services.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then All Women’s Care Associates is 342-8550, and those are the two places in Eugene.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, the thing is like — I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: We actually don’t tell anybody. I would probably call one of those two places and see what their guidelines are for how old you need to be. But your boyfriend’s not your guardian, and especially since he is older and you’re that much younger it’s mandatory to report that by state law if he was to be your guardian because technically that’s statutory rape.
CALLER: But what do you mean? I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: I know. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but I’m just saying by law because you’re so young and he’s over — especially over 18. He’s 22?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: If you report that to them, then it’s mandatory for them to report that because technically by law that is statutory rape. So I don’t think that that would work as far as him being your guardian to sign for you.
CALLER: Oh. So what should I do then?
CLINIC: Well, that I don’t know, but I think probably the best thing not to do would be to tell them — I mean, unless you’re wanting to get into something legal as far as from the state for statutory rape from him.
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Yeah. I wouldn’t tell them that then. I would probably just call and see if there has to be an age limit, and if so does it have to be your guardian who signs for you or can somebody else sign for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But if somebody else can sign for you, don’t let it be your 22-year-old boyfriend.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? (laughs) Just a word to the wise.
CALLER: Well, okay. Well, the thing — the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m just really scared.
CLINIC: You haven’t even had a positive pregnancy test yet?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. I think that would be probably be step one.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: You’re not going to get abortion until you know that you’re pregnant.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?
CLINIC: Yeah, you can. Yeah. How about you just drop in before 7:00 tonight, and we could do that service for you?
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right, or —
CLINIC: Yeah, it’s okay. He can bring you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But would he get in trouble?
CLINIC: We don’t report things unless you want us to report them, but like I was saying, if you were wanting to get an abortion done and if you were wanting him to sign for you, then that could lead to trouble. But as far as —
CALLER: Well, he would have to pay for it. Would they have to have him sign anything then?
CLINIC: You know, I don’t really know how their facility works.
CALLER: Well, I mean, like to get the pregnancy test?
CLINIC: For him? No. We have a funding program that your services would be free, so you don’t have to worry about cost.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: You know, unless you tell somebody in the room when they call you back for your pregnancy test, I don’t want to be with him, then that’s the only way we would report it. But abortion, that’s a different story.
CALLER: Oh. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same, like tonight?
CLINIC: Not tonight, no. We’d need to set up an appointment, but we could get it for you pretty soon.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?
CLINIC: Nope. It’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, do you know like — It’s just my problem is like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You’re the one having the abortion, so it applies to you. You have to be 15. So if you’re going to just be 14 then you need to have a parent signing off on all of the forms with you.
CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, if they found out me and my boyfriend were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Well, we’re not going to provide an illegal abortion for you. That would get us in a lot of trouble.
CALLER: Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents and you wouldn’t get in trouble?
CLINIC: It’s illegal to provide an abortion for someone under the age of 15 without parental consent.
CALLER: Well, is there anyplace I could go?
CLINIC: It’s a state law or it might be a federal law; I’m not sure. But that’s the law. So I mean, you really have —
CALLER: Well, what can I do?
CLINIC: You have to tell your parents or —
CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents.
CLINIC: Well, there’s nothing that I can do to change the law. We’re not going to provide the abortion for you unless your parents sign off on everything.
CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to tell them about my boyfriend though?
CLINIC: Well, they’re going to know that you got pregnant from someone. That’s up to you. I don’t know. We just need them to sign off consenting to the procedure.

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s a law. There’s nothing that we can really do about it.
CALLER: Well, could I get a pregnancy test without my parents having to know about that?
CLINIC: Yeah. You can get a pregnancy test. They’re the same that you buy in the store even.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: I think that you still have to be 15 to do that.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay. So what should I do then?
CLINIC: Well, I mean, you might just want to talk to your parents about what’s going on in your life.
CALLER: But they don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they don’t ever understand anything.
CLINIC: Maybe it’s just time that they know what’s going on with you. And maybe it will be hard for them at first, but a lot of times after just talking things through, people can be more understanding. I mean, do you know that you’re definitely pregnant? Have you taken a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.
CLINIC: Right. Well, do you normally miss periods?
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Okay. I mean, have you been feeling pregnant at all?
CALLER: I don’t know.
CLINIC: Do you feel nauseous or do you have any breast tenderness or anything like that?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, those would be signs of pregnancy, but you know, not everybody feels like that when they’re pregnant. Some people don’t have any signs. So I guess the best thing for you to do would be to take a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If it’s positive and an abortion is what you want, then you definitely have to tell your parents, and they need to be with you.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is that not old enough to take care of it?
CLINIC: Your boyfriend is not your parent, and the abortion is for you. So that’s a whole different issue on its own, you being 14 and him being 22. I mean, that’s a totally separate issue. But he is not your parent.
CALLER: Oh. Well, I just have a lot of questions and I’m really confused. Could I call you back if I thought of anything else to ask? What was your name?

CALLER: Well, could I be a patient and get birth control?
CLINIC: Not at this time. We’re not accepting patients. We’re seeing people for abortion.
