CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: We can give you the number where you can get that done.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you have a pen?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800 — this is the Dayton Women’s Center — 1-800-672-6810.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just really worried about all this because my — well, I’m going to be 14 in March and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Nope. Have to have parental consent when you’re a minor.
CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents at all? Because if they found out, I mean, I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: Well, what you need to do is you need to call and talk with the termination clinic. And they may have some legal ways to go about not doing that. But you need to talk to them. They do all that for you.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, first thing you probably need to do is, you probably need to come in with a first morning urine specimen, have a pregnancy test done.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And it’s $12.
CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. Is it all right if he’s there?
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. But he’s just worried about having to sign a bunch of papers. Would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So if — we’re open all day tomorrow or this afternoon would be a good time to come in. We have a clinic going on this morning, so any time after 12:00 noon would be fine, but you do have to bring in a urine specimen with you in a container.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And it’s $12, okay?
CALLER: So what time tomorrow?
CLINIC: All day. We’re here all day from 9:30 ’til 4:30.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: What you’d have to do is, we’d have to get you in and get you on, get you an exam and we’d get you set up on birth control.
CALLER: Okay, but would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I call back and ask for you if I had any other questions? What’s your name?
CLINIC: My name is Beth.

CALLER: I was the last person you were talking to.
CLINIC: Oh God, I’m sorry.

CLINIC: Okay. Go ahead. You wanted to ask me a question?
CALLER: Yeah. I was just wondering — like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to say anything?
CLINIC: Nope, nope.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yep. In Ohio there’s a parental notification law. So they would notify your parents. How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Ah boy. Call the first one I gave you and tell them what your problem is. They may be able to help you through that some way, but you need to call and tell them that, okay?
CALLER: All right. I wasn’t really sure if I’m pregnant. I’m just really scared because like my last period was December 14th, and I’m usually pretty regular.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: I don’t have anything until Tuesday. The only time I could see you is Tuesday at 9:15.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What’s your first name?
CALLER: It’s Christine.
CLINIC: When you wake up Tuesday you need to catch a few drops of your first morning urine and bring that with you. And it cost $9.
CALLER: Okay. Like I’d really feel better if my boyfriend was there. Is that all right?
CLINIC: Well, he can come with you if you want.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out like that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: We do but not on that day. You’d have to make another appointment to come back.
CALLER: Okay. But does anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CALLER: Do you know of any place that would?
CLINIC: Akron, Cleveland or Columbus are the areas closest to us, and they are listed in the — have you had a test done somewhere?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. If you’ve not had a pregnancy test done at the center, then it’s best to schedule a pregnancy test here and then we can give you the referral information if you need it.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Do you want to go ahead and set that up?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But is there like an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Is there a what?
CALLER: An age requirement to have a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No. Uh-uh. No. Um-um. Not at all. You can call any time and get a pregnancy test scheduled.
CALLER: So it’s all right if I’m going to be 14 in March?
CLINIC: It doesn’t make any difference.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?
CLINIC: No. Uh-uh. Not at all.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my friend told me that you guys would ask about like my boyfriend and have to tell my parents and they just can’t find out because they hate my boyfriend. They think he’s too old. But he’s only 22, so I don’t understand.
CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it depends upon — you know, there are some guidelines for Children’s Services that have to be followed, and that goes everywhere.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: I mean, if there’s a difference of four years then it is probably going to be reported to Children’s Services, yeah.
CALLER: Like what could happen?
CLINIC: What could happen? I have no idea. I mean, once — you know anybody that we see is in a dangerous situation or anything like that, we’re required to report to Children’s Services. So I mean, and then what happens after that is, you know, not our doing. So I don’t know. I mean, my guess it’s investigated or whatever.
CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. There’s no danger.
CLINIC: Well, I mean, there’s just some guidelines that have to be followed according to the state, and you know we’re obliged to do that, as is any physician.
CALLER: Well, what could I do?
CLINIC: What can you do?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Well, you can do a home test. Did you do that?
CALLER: Okay. Well, I did one of those over the weekend, but I wasn’t sure if I did it right.
CLINIC: What did it say?
CALLER: It was positive.
CLINIC: Okay, and is that a possibility?
CALLER: Well, I guess.
CLINIC: Well, have you been having sex without using anything?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Oh, well, then. Well, if that’s the case then you know, you’re not going to get — you’re not going to get an abortion done without your parental notification, so.
CALLER: But they can’t find out at all. What am I supposed to do?
CLINIC: Well, I mean, that’s something you’re going to have to figure out. But I mean, you know, there is a way to go through the court system to get it done without, but I doubt at your age that that’s going to happen.
CALLER: You don’t think that they would say that it was all right?
CLINIC: Nope!
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So, you know, you need to probably I would say, you know, look in the phone book and call one of the abortion centers in Akron and, you know, tell them you had a home test and what your situation is and see what they suggest. But I doubt you’re going to be able to do that without parental notification.
CALLER: Oh. Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: We never — anybody can come and get birth control.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me, because there wouldn’t be any other way to get there?
CLINIC: No, it doesn’t make any difference. Yeah.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: It doesn’t make any difference. You know, so — you know, I’m not sure what your next step is to be. But, you know, you definitely, I would run another home pregnancy test and see if it’s positive. Then if it is, you know, start making some phone calls.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But if I was on birth control and you wouldn’t have to like report my boyfriend or anything?
CLINIC: You don’t have to tell us that.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?
CALLER: Yeah.
