CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Yeah. The Women’s Centers in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus. Do you need a number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll look it up for you. The one in Dayton is 1-800-672-6810.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it okay if I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, it’s just, my friend told me that my parents have to sign for it, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Nope. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, no. You’ve got to have parental consent.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all because — well, they can’t find out. They don’t know we’re having sex. And they would be furious.

CLINIC: I know, but that’s a surgical procedure. So they’re going to — What you’ll need to do is call the termination clinic, and they’ll give you some counseling on what you need to do and how to go through that. But at this point —

CALLER: If I go there, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yeah. Because they have to have parental consent for that type of procedure.

CALLER: But is there any way not — like my friend had a lawyer one time when she — she told me that —

CLINIC: That’s if you can prove that the parents would be abusive to the patient or that there would be a major problem going on there.

CALLER: Well, would I be able to do that at all?

CLINIC: Well, you need to talk to that clinic in regards to that. But do you know that at your age, at 14, the age of your partner, that that’s an offense?

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: That’s illegal.

CALLER: What could happen to him?

CLINIC: That’s considered rape.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. There’s — I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Right. It’s against the law. That age span that’s there. So they may question that.

CALLER: Well, what could happen to him?

CLINIC: He would — Probably he would have charges against him with the police.

CALLER: With the police?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, what would — what could I do?

CLINIC: Well, probably what you need to do first is you need to call the Women’s Center and they will be very confidential, and talk to them as far as the procedure.

CALLER: Well, are they going to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: Yeah. The law states that they would have to report it, yes.

CALLER: But I can’t — they can’t say anything. I mean, well, he can’t get in trouble. What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, that’s against the law.

CALLER: But —

CLINIC: For a 14-year-old to have sex with a 21-year-old.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I mean — I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Well, you need to go in and get some counseling, hon. What you need to do is call them and go and get some counseling.

CALLER: But if I go in there, they’re going to send my boyfriend to jail?

CLINIC: Well, they’re going to counsel you and let you know what needs to be done.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want to go in and not have a boyfriend anymore.

CLINIC: Well, do you want to continue the pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: And eventually someone’s going to find out about the partner and the age.

CALLER: Well, my parents know him. They just really don’t like him.

CLINIC: Well, you need to get some counseling. So you probably need to call them and get in and get scheduled.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I come into there and get a pregnancy test because it’s — like my friend told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: You haven’t even had a pregnancy test done yet to prove that it’s a positive pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no. I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I didn’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. What you would need to do is bring in a first-morning urine specimen in a container.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And it’s $12 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody about my boyfriend if I came in there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, um, (sigh) okay. Well, would you have to have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test was negative would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah, still I would. We’d have to report it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Beth.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Contact Dayton.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Contact Dayton Abortion Clinic.

CALLER: Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: 1-800-672-6810.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me that my parents have to sign for something. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of that?

CLINIC: I doubt it.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Because there’s just no way my parents can find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, if you’re under 18 years old —

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, you’re going to need parental consent.

CALLER: Is there any way not to do that, because I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You’re going to have to have parental consent. You’re just a minor.

CALLER: Okay. Well, there’s just no way they can find out. Like what can I do?

CLINIC: Nothing. They’re going to have to find out. If you’re trying to get an abortion and you’re 14 years old, and you’re pregnant by a 22-year-old — first of all, that’s rape.

CALLER: But we’re in love. I don’t understand. That can’t be rape. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Law is rape. That is rape by law.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Well, you need to talk to your parents because you can’t get an abortion without their consent.

CALLER: But is it all right like if I came in there to get like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do it Wednesday, Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 —

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. Well, depending on the type of information that you give us. Yeah, we will have to turn him over to the authorities.

CALLER: But what if I just didn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Well, that would be up to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so like if I didn’t say anything it would be all right and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you just need to quit feeding me information now.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, like say the pregnancy test was negative. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back? Like I need to see if my boyfriend had any other questions. But could I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: You absolutely sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Shawn (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Darcy.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: Center for Choice and Toledo Medical Services. Would you like their phone numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Center for Choice is 255-7769. And Toledo Medical Services is 407-4800.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they have to say anything to my parents? Because like my friend told me that — like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —

CLINIC: Well, there is a process that you can go through that, where you don’t need parental consent, but they would be able to tell you what that is. It’s called judicial bypass.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: But I’m not sure what it entails. But they could tell you there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it okay if my boyfriend like signs for me, because he’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Just like the judge or whatever?

CLINIC: Yeah. The judge has to give you permission.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if he ever says no or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know anything about it since we don’t do that here, hon.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Ask one of the clinics. They’ll know.

CALLER: Do you do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me because that’s the only way I’d get there?

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test, but I don’t — over the weekend. But I don’t know if it, if I did it right.

CLINIC: Was it positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. If it was positive, it’s right. You’re not going to get a false positive.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So instead of wasting your money and time, you should probably just call Center for Choice first because they can also follow up and make sure. They’re going to do an ultrasound and make sure you’re pregnant anyway.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just my friend told me to talk to you guys.

CLINIC: Yeah. You should probably call one of the clinics first because the earlier you get things done, the cheaper it is and the less risky it is. So you don’t want to waste any time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: After you have your procedure it’s recommended that you come in within a week so we can get you started.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — if I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: No. You can come in by yourself. We don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Thanks. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Dorothy.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. I could give you a couple phone numbers of places that do.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: One of them is Center for Choice. That’s 255-1769. The other is Toledo Medical Services. 407-4800.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, do you know —Like I’m just really worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: He would not be able to give permission, but there are ways to circumvent telling your parents, and they can tell you all about those laws and how you go about doing it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No, it’s just I’m really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m worried.

CLINIC: Oh, my. Yes. On Thursdays from 2:00 to 6:00 we take walk-ins for pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend was there with me though?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Because he said that he was going to pay for everything. But we were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: No. It’s purely confidential, and we would just have your information written down, and nobody would have access to that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well if it ends up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Center for Choice. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Are you a student or do you receive any type of government assistance for your health care?

CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: So you’re a minor?

CALLER: Well, yeah. Well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. But it’s just my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. What we would need to do is — number one, it has to be a legal parent or guardian. And I know that he’s neither. Is telling your parents not a possibility?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, then you would need to go through the bypass system, which means that you would need to go in front of a judge. And it’s not as bad as it sounds. You would just need to go in front of a judge and basically explain why it wouldn’t be in your best interest to tell your parents about it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Are you a student or do you receive any type of government assistance for your health care?

CALLER: No. I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: So he would be paying for it?

CALLER: Right, yeah. He said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. It would be 400.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just the thing is, we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything in cash would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: He has nothing to do with it. It would be all you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for the bypass thing?

CLINIC: That’s included.

CALLER: Oh, it is?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the person ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Not that I know of, but it happens. Do you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’ve got to call my boyfriend to see, but what times do you have open?

CLINIC: You wouldn’t be able to get in until Monday for your first visit because we do procedures on Friday. So you would need to come in for a visit prior to that. So you wouldn’t be able to come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test. Would you guys be able to do that beforehand?

CLINIC: Yes. What’s your name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in and take one for like $2.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was there for that?

CLINIC: We’re like any other doctor’s office. We can’t tell anything unless you say that we can. And we’re not going to schedule an appointment until you’ve had a pregnancy test. So why don’t you come in and take a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: Well, if you wanted to be on the pill, it would be $50 for a pap smear and then six months of birth control pills would be included with that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, honey. No one has to know anything unless you tell. Anything you do here, nothing, not unless you tell them.

CALLER: All right. Okay. I’m just really confused, and I have so many questions. But I can’t think of anything right now. If I thought of something else to ask, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Patrice.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
