CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Christine speaking.
CALLER: Yeah, hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we do not.
CALLER: You don’t? Do you know of anyone that does?
CLINIC: No, I don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No, you don’t. The cost is $8.00 for them.
CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me because like that’s the only way I would be able to get there.
CLINIC: That’s, you know, up to you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Depending upon what your — your transportation.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does anybody have to tell my parents that I’m there?
CLINIC: Do you mean, are we?
CALLER: Right?
CLINIC: Every — all your examinations and all of your — everything that we do is confidential. So if you needed a pregnancy test then you can come in and have a test done.
CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend comes with me?
CLINIC: That’s up to you.
CALLER: Oh, because like he — like you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents? It’s just, if my parents found out they would be really mad because they don’t like him. They think he’s too old for me, but he’s only 22, so I don’t understand. But, they just can’t find out.
CLINIC: Okay. That’s — you know. That’s your choice.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, after the pregnancy test could I get birth control there if it was like negative?
CLINIC: Hold on one second, okay?
CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Gail.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, not at this Planned Parenthood. The one in Cincinnati does and Woman’s Med does.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want the Woman’s Med in Dayton?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. That number is 293-3917.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like my friend told me that like since I’ll be 14 in March, that you guys have to tell my parents. But is it okay — like my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?
CLINIC: Well, if he’s 22, in that situation they may want to arrest him. How old are you? 14?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March, but you have to arrest him?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: Simply because that’s a law. That’s statutory rape.
CALLER: What could happen to him? Like – we’re in love. He can’t be arrested.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, I’m just letting you know if you took him, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Now do you have an aunt?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Or someone who’s 18 — or 21. That’s the age.
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22.
CLINIC: Yeah. I understand that. But you’re just 14, sweetheart, okay?
CALLER: But he can’t take care of that?
CLINIC: No. Well, he wouldn’t be the ideal person. It has to be a relative.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Now do you know anyone that’s a relative that you can tell?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, you’re going to have to stand in front of the court before you can have that abortion also to get permission granted. And you have to speak in front of a judge and let him know that, you know, the reason why you don’t think you’re ready for this child or, you know —
CALLER: Well, does the court have to know about him?
CLINIC: That’s if you tell them.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But yet and still, you need a relative. That’s the point that you’re missing.
CALLER: But they can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Well, there is a way they can find out.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: He has to be a relative — an uncle or aunt.
CALLER: But I don’t have anybody. It’s just me and my parents.
CLINIC: You have grandparents?
CALLER: No. Well, how do I go to the court? What do I do?
CLINIC: You have to stand in front of a judge in order to grant you an abortion. Okay?
CALLER: Well, how would I get there?
CLINIC: You go downtown. Downtown at the court building for juvenile, okay? And you will speak to a judge there.
CALLER: Do I need a lawyer or anything?
CLINIC: Need a what, sweetie?
CALLER: A lawyer?
CLINIC: No. Well, they’re appoint you someone, you know, if you cannot pay. It’s always a person there that can represent you, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well —
CLINIC: Now is there any way you can get here so I can give you information on that?
CALLER: Well, yeah. I think so.
CLINIC: Or can I mail it to you? Or what do you want me to do?
CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could take me, but I don’t have any other way to get there besides that. But is it all right if he brings me?
CLINIC: It’s who?
CALLER: My boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Yeah, he can pick up that pamphlet. I will give it to you. I want you to read over it. And both of you, so you’ll understand where you stand at, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. So if he can come up and pick it up, I’ll have that ready for him.
CALLER: But you’re sure you don’t have to tell anybody about him?
CLINIC: No. Well, no.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No. I can just give it to him, and he can go ahead and you guys can follow what the pamphlet says. But like I said, you are going to need a relative or someone 21, okay? It states that. So you read over it and get an understanding. If you have any more questions, feel free to call me back.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I was actually wondering like if you guys do the pregnancy tests there.
CLINIC: Yeah. We do the pregnancy tests. I can do a pregnancy test, but it will run you $12.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Have you missed several periods, or —
CALLER: Well, my last period was like the second week in December.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. Yeah. You would need a pregnancy test. Your periods used to come regular each month?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you’re going to need a pregnancy test so —
CALLER: Would it be all right if he brought me for that?
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine, sweetie.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative do you guys have birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do have birth control.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to — yeah. Because we just don’t want to go through all this again.
CLINIC: Yeah, I understand. We can set you up an appointment after we get the results from the pregnancy test, and if it’s negative you can be seen here.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We do a complete examination on you with your pap smear and so forth, and then we’ll let you know when your periods do start that you should start taking your birth control pills the Sunday following your menses. Okay? We will explain everything to you.
CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anybody about anything?
CLINIC: Well, the thing is, okay, he’s 22. If he brings you up here — I am going to talk to you, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And help you out as much as I can in this situation. Now if you are pregnant then that’s a different story, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So let’s start with the pregnancy test first, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? What is your name, so I can look forward? Just your first name.
CALLER: It’s Christine.
CLINIC: Christine? Okay. Christine, can you make it here this morning?
CALLER: No. I’d have to — he’s at work today, so.
CLINIC: Oh, okay. When can you make it? Can you make it some time this week?
CALLER: I think so.
CLINIC: If you’re in school I can give you a slip that stated that —
CALLER: I’m home-schooled, so.
CLINIC: Oh, you’re home-schooled? Okay. Well, if you can make it here sometime this week, Christine, we can see you and do the, start with the pregnancy test.
CALLER: But you’re sure you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?
CLINIC: Well, at this time I would not tell anybody – at this time – Christine.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Now you have to look at the situation if it is positive. Okay?
CALLER: Well, so you’d have to tell someone if it was positive?
CLINIC: Well, there’s a guideline that any, you know, teenager with him being 22 years old that’s a big age difference, Christine.
CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. I don’t —
CLINIC: I understand that you’re in love. But the thing is, that is like statutory rape, okay? And if you were my daughter I wouldn’t want you to be dating a boyfriend that that’s old. You know? That’s too old, sweetie, okay? So I’m going to talk to you. All I want you to do is come in this week and let’s get that pregnancy test taken, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? My name is Gail, so you can call here and let me know when you’re going to come in and do the pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then we’ll go from then on.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Okay, Christine?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Oh, you’re so welcome. Have a good day.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood?
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CALLER: Well, do you know of anyplace that does?
CLINIC: Yeah. Cincinnati.
CALLER: Do you have that phone number?
CLINIC: Yes, I do. Hang on for just a second, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. The phone number is 513-287-6488.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just I’m really scared because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: You really need to call this number and talk to them, and ask them about that. I don’t know. You know?
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: I have somebody else here that can talk to who might know a little bit more. Could you hold for just a minute?
CALLER: Yeah.
(pause)
RECORDING: — and meetings. If you’d like more information about our teaching tools, let us know when we return to the line. Did you know that Planned Parenthood offers men’s healthcare services? We offer testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. We also offer —
CLINIC: Hi, this is Vicky the assistant manager. You had some questions?
CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion. But like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: They do have to notify your parents, one of your parents. They don’t have to get their consent; they just have to talk to them on the phone.
CALLER: Is there any way not to tell my parents? Cause well, if they found out I don’t know what would happen.
CLINIC: You got the number to Cincinnati?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: You just need to call them, and they can talk to you about what to do. Because we don’t deal with that here.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: You’re not sure that you’re pregnant?
CALLER: No, I’m just really scared because like my last period was December 14th.
CLINIC: Okay. Yes, you can come here. It would cost $6.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody I was there for that?
CLINIC: No, no.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I would really want my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?
CLINIC: He wouldn’t be able to come back with you, and we have to just take you back by yourself. He could come in, you know, and sit in the waiting room.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask a lot of questions. Would you ask anything?
CLINIC: Well, no.
CALLER: Or have him sign anything?
CLINIC: No. No, not at all.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there? It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this again.
CLINIC: Yeah, right, definitely. Do you live with him or not?
CALLER: No, I live with my parents.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we can do that for you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You can come in. If you want to come in today you can.
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But are you guys open like next week?
CLINIC: Yeah. We’re just open until 2 today. You wouldn’t need an appointment if you just want to come in for a pregnancy test. You can come in Monday anytime from 9 to 4, or Tuesday anytime from 12 to 6.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, I’m not able to drive because I’m not old enough. But is it all right if my boyfriend picks up the pills after everything?
CLINIC: Yeah, as long as, you know, we — that’s down the road though. (laughs) After we find out if you’re pregnant or not.
CALLER: But he’d be able to pick them up and that would be all right?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Heidi speaking.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Not at our center in Oxford, but at the one in Cincinnati we do.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?
CLINIC: I sure do. Hang on, let me see if I can read it from this far. I can’t read it from this far away. Hang on for a moment.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Thanks.
(short pause)
CLINIC: Thanks for holding. Their number is 513-287-6488. And I believe they’re there now, so. Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a question real quick?
CLINIC: Oh, definitely.
CALLER: I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, they would have to tell somebody. If you’re interested I can get you a number for — it’s Ohio state law. So if you go to Illinois, it’s the closest state, I think, from where we’re at where you do not need parental notification.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So I can give you a number of the Planned Parenthood in Illinois and a number of — there’s an abortion center I have the number for in Chicago. I don’t know if there’s a closer one, a Planned Parenthood closer, to where we are if you don’t feel like driving that far north. I can get you their Planned Parenthood number in Illinois, and you can try there, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Hang on for just a moment, please.
RECORDING: — STD? Do you just want to be sure everything’s okay in regards to your sexual health? Then purchase our Peace of Mind package. For only $30 you’ll receive coupons for the following. Ask a staff member for details when we return. The emergency contraceptive pill, commonly known as the “Morning After Pill” —
CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. This is somebody different. I’m Marsha. You needed the number for a place in Illinois?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. And are you interested in one that does not have parental notification; is that correct?
CALLER: Uh-huh, yeah. I can’t let my parents know at all.
CLINIC: Okay, sure. It’s a place called Family Planning Associates Medical Group. And their number is 773-725-0200.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And I will see — Let me just kind of peek at — So as far as Illinois, let me see if I’ve got — I’ll give you the Chicago affiliate. I don’t know which one provides abortions, if any of them, and what their regulations are. It looks like there’s a bunch of different ones. I’m going to give you just a line to the main one. It’s 312-427-2276, and maybe they can help you also.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test to see?
CLINIC: Oh, sure. Just to verify?
CALLER: The main reason is because I’m really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14th.
CLINIC: Okay, sure. And you are under 18, correct?
CALLER: Right. I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Okay. So the test will cost you $6, and we’ll just need you to pay for that up front before we run it. We’ll collect a urine specimen while you’ll here, and you’re fill out some forms for us, and you’ll get the results. And you can just walk in for that – as long as you get here by 4:30 today.
CALLER: My boyfriend wanted to be there with me. Is that all right?
CLINIC: What we will do is we want to talk with you first before we involve him. So we’ll sit with you in a room and give you the results and talk with you, and then he can come back. But initially we just need to deal with you.
CALLER: Okay. Well, he just says that — we talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know at all.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. And, I mean, that’s your decision.
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: So there is nobody that we do have to directly talk with, you know, as far as telling that you are here for a test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: All right. Well, if the pregnancy test said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control then?
CLINIC: Most definitely.
CALLER: Okay. I just don’t want to have to worry about all this again.
CLINIC: Yeah, most definitely.
CALLER: Do you know like if I was there that — I just don’t want anybody to know about my boyfriend or anything. Would you guys have to say anything?
CLINIC: Well, we do have — I mean, it depends on how much information you give us. If you come in and you tell us information that is a reportable incident, then we will have to report it. You can choose —
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: — not to tell us information. There’s certain laws about age, dating. So if you were to report, say, that possibly your boyfriend is older than you are, and you’re a minor, then we would definitely have to call and report that. If you do not give us that information or do not say that to us, then we are not required to report it. We are state mandated to report any information you give us regarding that.
CALLER: Oh. So I just shouldn’t say anything?
CLINIC: It’s your choice what you want to tell us, okay?
CALLER: Okay. All right. So if I was on birth control, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?
CLINIC: No, we do not have to tell anybody if you’re on birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No, all of our services are confidential.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All rightly.
CALLER: So I don’t have to tell my parents anything at all?
CLINIC: No, you do not.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: You do not. Not for birth control, no.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: There is parental notification for abortions unless you go somewhere else, which you’ve probably already been through that before, correct?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: So. Pardon?
CALLER: What do you mean by I’ve already been — I don’t —
CLINIC: I mean you’ve already — You knew that because you were asking for a number where you didn’t have to provide — correct?
CALLER: Oh. Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. But not for birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And like I said, we just do pregnancy tests on a walk-in basis. So there are people here for scheduled appointments. We just work you in between them. And you just need to be here by 4:30.
CALLER: And your name was Marsha?
CLINIC: I’m Marsha.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Judy.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we do not.
CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?
CLINIC: Abortion clinics?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Yeah. That’s who does them. Look in your phone book under “abortion.”
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you guys do like pregnancy tests there? It’s just my friend told me to call you, so.
CLINIC: We do pregnancy testing. If you want a pregnancy test they’re $8 or a medical card.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? Because like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No. No.
CALLER: Is that all right?
CLINIC: Are you having unprotected sex?
CALLER: Well, I don’t have any birth control, but, yeah.
CLINIC: So you’re having unprotected sex.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Yeah. I can do a pregnancy test. I’m running a clinic right now, so if you come today there might be a wait. If you come Thursday morning or Friday afternoon, we don’t have a clinic then, so you can get in and out real quick.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But they’re $8. You don’t need to bring urine. We’ll get it when you get here.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend said that you guys have to tell my parents.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: But is it okay if like my boyfriend —
CLINIC: I’m not going to tell your parents if you come in and get a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if my boyfriend brings me and everything?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my parents can’t find out at all because like they hate my boyfriend.
CLINIC: I’m not going to tell your parents if you walk in and got a test.
CALLER: They just think he’s too old.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: I promise.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control?
CLINIC: Yes. If you’re not pregnant we can set you up with an appointment at that time to come back and get an exam. If everything’s okay then we can, you know —
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. So like is there like any papers to sign or anything?
CLINIC: When you come in for your pregnancy test they’ll give you a couple papers, yeah, and just let them know that your parents doesn’t know you’re there.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So we’ll put you down as a “julie” (sp) patient.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you guys need — like my friend said that you guys have to know that my boyfriend’s 22. Is that something you guys need to know or —
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Um. You know, I’d probably have you come in Thursday afternoon and have the manager do your test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And we’ll just go from there.
CALLER: Well, do you guys have to know anything about my boyfriend or —
CLINIC: Not unless you want to tell me about him. I mean, is he beating on you? Is he hurting you? Is he forcing you to have sex?
CALLER: No. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Well, at 22 usually they don’t, you know, hang out with 14-year-olds.
CALLER: I don’t understand. Like I don’t know. We’re in love. We’ve been going out for like almost a year now.
CLINIC: There’s a reason that your parents doesn’t (sic) like him and it’s because of his age. They don’t him to take advantage of you.
CALLER: But we’re in love.
CLINIC: Well, you know what? I’m not a counselor. I’m not to debate whether you’re in love or whether you’re not in love. You think you might be pregnant. I can get you in. We can do a pregnancy test, okay?
CALLER: Okay. But if he brings me do you guys have to say anything about him?
CLINIC: You know what? I’m here to see you.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So do you want to come in Thursday?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to see if he could get off work but — it’s the only way I’d be able to get there, but.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Would he get in trouble if he brings me?
CLINIC: You know, again, your parents know he’s around, right? They know how old he is?
CALLER: Yeah. He used to work with my dad.
CLINIC: That’s, you know — I don’t know all the stipulations with that, but I’m here to see you. You’re the one signing in.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: And that’s all that matters.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: If I needed an abortion, do my parents have to know about that?
CLINIC: You know what? That’s a whole other road. I’d probably wait and see what your test shows up as. But if you’re under 18, you either need parental consent or you’re going to have to go to juvenile court and see if you can get around it that way. I don’t know all that, so that’s why you’re going to come in and see the manager. She’s up to date with that, and she can, you know, she can direct you in the direction you need to go.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want to make an appointment, and then if you can’t keep it do you want to cancel it at that time?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I just need to talk to my boyfriend and see.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: He’s not forcing you to have sex or anything like that?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Has anybody ever called Children’s Service Board on you guys?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. But your mom and dad know about him?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: I hope I’ll see you on Thursday.
