CALLER: What do you mean? I don’t understand.
CLINIC: If you’re only 14 and your boyfriend’s 22, it’s statutory rape.
CALLER: What is that? I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Well, I mean, that’s something you’d have to talk with your parents about.
CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents. They hate him.
CLINIC: Well, I mean, the laws are the laws. You’ll have to call the abortion clinic, but he won’t be able to take care of it. They will have to advise your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if there’s a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. I mean, it’s because we don’t perform them we don’t deal with that at all.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if my parents have to know at all?
CLINIC: I have no idea.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do like the pregnancy tests there so I don’t have to —

CALLER: — drive all the way out there?
CLINIC: They do — they will require an ultrasound and a pregnancy test and that kind of thing. So the first thing you ought to do would be to call them and decide what clinic you’re going to do it at, and then if there’s anything we could do for you then give us a call back.
CALLER: Well, is it okay to go to where you’re at because my friend told me to go there. So.
CLINIC: To go here for what?
CALLER: Like the pregnancy test.
CLINIC: Well, I would call them first and see what they need because they might not accept it from us. You might have to do it there anyways.

CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?
CALLER: Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests at all?

CALLER: Well, my friend said something about getting like a lawyer or something. Could I do that?
CLINIC: You could file for an emancipated minor.
CALLER: Yeah? What does that involve?
CLINIC: You’d probably have to talk to an attorney.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do I have to — how do I pay for that?
CLINIC: With — honey, I don’t know how that works with you being underage. I’m really not sure. I would just contact an attorney’s office and ask a few general questions about it and then go from there.
CALLER: Would they have to — so like, well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test to see?
CLINIC: Yeah. You’re only 13?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And he’s 22?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: That, under Ohio law, is a statutory rape.
CALLER: What is that? I don’t understand.
CLINIC: He could get in a bunch of trouble because you’re way underage and —
CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: But that doesn’t matter. Your ages is too far apart. He’s 22 and you’re 13.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-428-3673. And what they’re going to need to do is they’re going to need to get you a judicial bypass.
CALLER: Okay. What is that?
CLINIC: A judicial bypass means you’re going to have to go in front of a judge, and you’re going to have to prove to him that you’re in some kind of danger and that you’re competent enough to make this decision.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: This kind of “danger” would be that if your parents found out they’re going to kick you out or they’re going to beat you up or they’re going to hurt you.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: Is what they’ll do is, you’ll make an appointment with Akron, you’ll go up for probably a consultation. He’ll go straight over to the courthouse. Somebody will go with you. They will then take you back and you’ll have the procedure done the same day.
CALLER: Do I have to get like a lawyer or anything?
CLINIC: They can take care of that. You will — I mean, there is a major cost for an abortion. I mean, it’s very expensive.
CALLER: Okay. How much is it?
CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are. You’re talking about probably $600.
CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of it, so.
CLINIC: Okay. How old’s your boyfriend?
CALLER: He’s 22.
CLINIC: That’s another problem you may run into, having him involved with this.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: He’s 22, you’re 14. In the state of Ohio, even if it’s consensual, that’s statutory rape.
CALLER: What do you mean? I don’t understand. Like —
CLINIC: Okay, because you’re 14 years old and he’s 22 years old, in the state of Ohio even though you said it was okay to sleep together, you guys had sex and you agreed to it, the state of Ohio still considers that statutory rape.
CALLER: But what could happen?
CLINIC: He can go to jail.
CALLER: What? Well, what can I do? I don’t understand.
CLINIC: What you need to do is, you need to call Akron Women’s Medical Group.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: I would probably keep him as far out of this as possible.

CLINIC: Because if it gets into the court, then they can get him on statutory rape. You’re going to probably have to say you’re not sure who the father is.
