CLINIC: Planned Parenthood East. This is Barbara. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, do you know — like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that you guys have to tell my parents. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. No, no, no. You can go get a judicial bypass, and we’ll explain that when you come in for your education.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to make an appointment, honey?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can drive me in.

CLINIC: Okey doke. Well, give us a call because we’re booking into Thursday, and once that’s full you’ll have to wait until next week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if I came in for a pregnancy test, do you guys do — would you guys have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yes, it is.

CALLER: Okay. Would he have to sign anything or anything —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because he said he was —

CLINIC: But you will have to fill out paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You will. As a patient here. But everything is confidential.

CALLER: So like, is it okay — like if my parents had to sign anything, could my boyfriend do it? Because he’s like 22.

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No. And being 14 years old, why are you with a 22-year-old man?

CALLER: Well, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay, honey. He can bring you in.

CALLER: Um-hum.

CLINIC: But in order to get parental consent, you don’t have to do that, we can get you a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you will have to go in front of a judge and explain the situation.

CALLER: Oh. What if he says no?

CLINIC: Then you’re going to have to go to your parents. Being 14 years old, that’s up to the judge.

CALLER: Oh. But there’s no way that I can tell my parents. I would get —

CLINIC: Well, you need to tell the judge that, honey.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s nothing I can do about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys have to tell my parents about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No. I just was very thrown off by that. His age is 22 and you’re 14.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what do you mean?

CLINIC: It just surprised me.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Is that bad or anything?

CLINIC: No, that’s up to you, honey. That’s your business. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh. Alright. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if I came in and had a pregnancy test there, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Founder’s Women’s Health Center. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: The fee is different depending upon how far along you are. Is this for yourself?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. It looks like right now you’d be about nine-and-half weeks pregnant. It’s $350 total. Are you aware that you would have to come in for two visits?

CALLER: Oh. Well, all right.

CLINIC: The reason you come for two is because, first of all, you have to come and sign consent forms and have your blood drawn and an ultra sound. And that’s your first visit. And then you have a 24-hour waiting period before you come back for surgery. And then, you can come back anytime after the 24 hours is up and have surgery done. Is that something you want to set up an appointment for?

CALLER: Well, actually I was wondering — It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: The only way that you cannot tell your parents is if you go through the courts. And there’s a lot of paperwork you have to fill out. You have to go through the court system to prove that you’re old enough to handle this and do this with out a parental consent.

CALLER: Well, do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No. Can you hold for just a minute, and I’ll get information for you about that?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hang on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CLINIC: Are you still there?

CALLER: I’m here.

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for waiting, honey. What you can do, is I can set up an appointment for you to come in for your first appointment, which is your counseling. And at that time we have to give you all the information about doing the court bypass. The court bypass is where you bypass any guardian having to come with you. And we can tell you what you’ll go through, what’s going to happen and all of that information, okay?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You need to come in with $150. And that’s for your ultra sound, your blood work, your counseling. And, obviously, we’ll give you information about the court bypass.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost for the court though?

CLINIC: I don’t believe that it does. I don’t think it does. But what I’m going to have to do is have you come in for that first visit at least. And then what you’ll have to do is we’ll give you all of the information here. And then after you’ve been given all of that information, then we have to wait for court papers and the okay before we can do anything else. Does that make sense?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you want to set up that first appointment?

CALLER: Well, I have to talk to my boyfriend to see. But we were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. But you need to have a birth certificate with you. Can you get a hold of that?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You need your birth certificate, some type of an I.D., like a student I.D. from school or a state I.D. Do you have like an I.D., before you get a drivers license? Do you have a state I.D?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you have a school I.D.?

CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Oh goodness. Do you have anything that has a picture of you with your name on it? Like the only other thing would be like a school book. Like a school year book has a picture with your name on it.

CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled. I don’t have a —

CLINIC: I know. Do you have anything else like that?

CALLER: Not really. Well, how do I get a state I.D.?

CLINIC: What I would recommend for you to do, you can go to like the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and go get a state I.D..

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can do that. That’s very easy to do. You’ll probably need your Social Security number with you, your birth certificate, that sort of thing. Do you have a Social Security card?

CALLER: I don’t know. I don’t think so.

CLINIC: Okay. This is stuff you have to have to be able to come in for your first visit even. Write this down, honey, so that you know, okay? You have to have your Social Security card, you have to have a birth certificate, your name, all that good stuff.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, my mom might know if I have a Social Security card, but I’m not sure.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you’ll have to figure out a way to ask her for it. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want to go ahead and make your first appointment or talk to your boyfriend first, and then let him know these are the things you have to have, and then call us back?

CALLER: Well, when do you have your times? When do you have any open times?

CLINIC: You come in anytime Monday through Friday. We have different appointments. You can schedule that anytime between Monday through Friday for your first appointment. On Mondays and Thursdays your appointment’s going to be at 9:00. If you come on Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday, it’s at 8:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? There’s a first appointment Monday through Friday that we do —

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yes. That you can do without anybody having to know about. What you have to do is take your first morning urine. So when you first get up in the morning and you have to go to the bathroom, put it in some type of a container with a tight lid. Usually like a little pill bottle will work best. And it has to be a clean container. You drop that off anytime between 12 and 1 Monday through Friday. And then you call back an hour-and-a-half later to find out your results.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure that nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nobody has to know about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, all the information that I’m telling you up until this point can be kept from anybody. So I would recommend you do your pregnancy test first; then you and your boyfriend can discuss what you’re going to do from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So, what you’ll probably have to do is wait for tomorrow when you get a first-morning urine, because it has to be the first time you go in the morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yes. We can bring you in for those appointments too. We can give you all that information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Seventy-five dollars, an annual exam. Have you ever had that done before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: A pap test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $75. And we give you two packs of birth control pills. And then we give you a prescription for four months. We give you a pap test, and then you’ll also get screened for any sexually transmitted diseases.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And all of those appointments are on Wednesdays only. We can also offer you a school excuse because — well, you’re not going to need that with your mother. Never mind. I was thinking going back to school if you need an excuse. But, yes, you can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my boyfriend and I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Well, it’s a very smart decision for you to make. You know, if you turn up negative, definitely you’re going to want to get on birth control. But even if you do have to go through all this, you do decide to have the abortion, we can still get you started on birth control after your surgery. And while you’re here we give you all of that information. And we also do all of the exams and check-ups for birth control here as well. So you can even start coming here, after an abortion, for all of your birth control needs.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. You’ve just been so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. Could I call you if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Jennifer.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can always call me back and ask me any questions. And I’m a mom. And hopefully someday my daughter will say that about me (chuckles).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you do need any other help, honey, just let me know. But please come in and do your pregnancy test first. That’s the best step.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: We’ll see you soon. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Paula. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. Did you want some phone numbers of some areas?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Just hold, please. Okay, I have the Women’s Med Center on East Route Road in (Caring?). That’s 1-800-672-6810. And I have one in Columbus which is 1-800-282-9490. And one in Cincinnati which is 513-281-0001.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Like, well, my friend said that my parents have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want your parents to know?

CALLER: Not at all.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, yours is different. What county do you live in?

CALLER: Well, I live in New Lebanon.

CLINIC: What county?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to find out what county you live in so that you can call the juvenile court.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what you need to do is request for a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That means that the judge will okay you for a termination without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Do I have to get a lawyer?

CLINIC: No. They’ll take care of it all for you. But you need to find out what county you live in. I can give you the numbers.

CALLER: Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: I don’t — you’ll have to call there. It’s nothing to do with me. I mean, it’s out of our hands because of your age. You need to go through the court system.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they ask about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’re going to have to call them and ask.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me just give you the information. It says “teens under the age of 18 years old must have parents’ permission before getting a termination in the state of Ohio unless a court has decided differently. That is called a judicial bypass. You may go to the court in the county where you live” — so it’s important that you find out what county you live in — “next to where you live or where the abortion will be performed. If you are considering a termination without telling your parents, a lawyer will be appointed to represent you in court at no cost to you.”

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But let me give you the number of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court. It’s 937-225-4141.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And I just ask to talk about —

CLINIC: You tell them that you would like to discuss a judicial bypass for a termination.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys like do pregnancy tests there? Like my friend told me to call you guys, so.

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests. It’s $12 unless you have a medical card or proof of income. Have you done a pregnancy test already?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test over the weekend, but I don’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Well, we can do another one. It’s $12. You can come in this afternoon between 1:00 and 4:00.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me and is there with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. It’s $12 unless you have a medical card or proof of income.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean about the income?

CLINIC: You know, proof of income.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. So that would be $12.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if my boyfriend pays for it?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if the pregnancy test was negative could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: We’d have to make you an appointment for a full pap, a pelvic and a breast exam. It wouldn’t be today. We’d just make you an appointment to come back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you guys could do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: That’s correct.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Women’s (unclear) Center. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: Yes, I do.

CALLER: How much?

CLINIC: That would depend on the length of pregnancy of the patient.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how pregnant you are?

CLINIC: You don’t know how pregnant you are?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 15th, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: You haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. If you were pregnant, you would be about seven weeks. From 6 to 11 weeks, it’s $395.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I have another question, actually. I’m just kind of worried cause like, well, I’m going to be 14 the 19th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You’re either going to have to have parental consent or judicial bypass. Your boyfriend is 22, and you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: You’re 13.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh. You either have to have parental consent or a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What’s a judicial bypass?

CLINIC: That’s something you would have to get with the court, the Montgomery County court. And if you tell them your boyfriend is 22 and you are 13, they’re not going to give it to you.

CALLER: So I shouldn’t say?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t. Because, actually, he could get arrested on the spot.

CALLER: Oh. Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re 13 and he’s 22.

CALLER: So he could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s ever there for me. He can’t — I don’t know what I’d do if he wasn’t there.

CLINIC: Those are your options. I’ve got somebody on the other line.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for the judicial bypass?

CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything for judicial bypass. It’s completely free.

CALLER: So I could come in there for a pregnancy test, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: You just go ahead and take a home pregnancy test. They work just fine.

CALLER: So those are normally right?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Well, if I got the judge to bypass, would you have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Would I have to?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: No. This is a doctor’s office.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Would I be able to get birth control anywhere?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. I’m Jane.

If you are a current patient — (dial sound) Central Ohio Women’s Center, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, provides abortion up to 13 weeks counted from the first day of your last period. Patients may choose surgical abortion with either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation or medical abortion with the abortion medication methotrex. The state of Ohio requires a two-step process to obtain a legal abortion. The first step is called an education visit. At the appointment, the patient has an ultrasound examination to determine how far along she is in the pregnancy, has one tube of blood drawn and meets one-on-one with a staffmember to discuss her options and receive educational materials. The education visit can take up to two hours, so plan your time accordingly. The law requires a 24-hour waiting period between the education visit and the procedure. At the end of the education visit, you may choose to schedule the abortion procedure. We charge $325 for an abortion with local anesthesia, $425 for an abortion with IV sedation, and $450 for a medical abortion with minimum dosage. $100 must be paid at the time of the education visit. Payment must be made by money order or credit card. Discounts and payment plans are not available. If you are under the age of 18 and want to have an abortion without your parents consent, we can give you information about judicial bypass during your education visit.

CLINIC: This is Betty. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t at this clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do at our East Clinic. That’s 3211 East Main Street. You want me to transfer you out there?

CALLER: Well, no. I just wanted to ask some quick questions actually.

CLINIC: Okay, you need to call them, honey, because I can’t answer any of those questions.

CALLER: Oh, it’s just my friend told me to call and talk to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay, well, hold on and I’ll let you talk to them.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold on.

(ringing 9X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood East. Megan speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It goes anywhere from $325 to $450.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that, well, since I’m going to be like 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: No. You’ll have to go get what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to stand in front of a judge, and he’s going to ask you some questions, and you have to answer them, and then he’ll either grant or deny you permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does he usually grant it?

CLINIC: Yeah. I haven’t seen anybody yet that got denied.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do I need like a lawyer for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to schedule your education appointment?

CALLER: Well, I just was wondering — like the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Do I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can if you would like.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we only go to 12 weeks, 6 days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you’re pushing the border here.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? So you’ll need to get in and get a pregnancy test and do your education quickly.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, it’s just I can’t drive yet, but my boyfriend said he would bring me and take care of everything. Would that be all right if he pays for everything and was there with me?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No. He’s not going to sign anything. It’s going to be you and your judicial bypass.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. You can walk in for a pregnancy test today until 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there so that we don’t have to worry about all this again?

CLINIC: Yeah. We’ll give you all the information that you need to get you on birth control and stuff.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I was on birth control would you have to tell anybody though?

CLINIC: No, honey. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?
