(short pause)
CLINIC: Thanks for calling. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. You have to call Bedford or Pre-Term.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?
CLINIC: Bedford’s number is 440-232-9732. But their office is probably closed today.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question then?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to say anything?
CLINIC: Nope. Actually, you need parental consent – not even that they’re telling your parents – but that your parents are consenting to it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to do that? Because if they found out I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: You can try to go — if you call Bedford, they’ll probably be able to tell you more about it. But you go in front of a judge and try to make your case that you’re responsible enough to make this decision on your own. The only problem with that is it usually takes a while. Do you know how far along you are?
CALLER: No. Well, it’s just I’m really scared cause like the main reason why I’m scared about all this is because my last period was December 14th. So, I don’t know.
CLINIC: Okay. So December 14th. So you are probably — you’re at the end of your first trimester, you know, like between 10 and 11 weeks based on — that’s just a rough guess based on your last period.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Which means — Bedford only does them up to 13 weeks. Pre-Term is the other clinic, and they’ll do the second trimester abortion. But I don’t know if you can go before the judge and do a second trimester. I don’t know. Because we don’t do them here so I don’t really know a whole lot about them.
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Yeah, they’re $10.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, I would really like it if my boyfriend was there with me. Would that be all right?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask about him. Would I have to tell anybody about him or anything?
CLINIC: Do your parents — I mean, it doesn’t matter to us.
CALLER: Oh, okay. What do you mean?
CLINIC: That he’s 22?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: I mean, the clinician might lecture you, but I’m not going to say anything.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Say that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yeah, but you’d have to make an appointment for that.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: If I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: So my parents wouldn’t have to know anything at all?
CLINIC: Nope, not about birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions — I need to talk to my boyfriend and see, but could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Meagan. I’m the only one here today, so. In fact, we’re technically closed today, but I’ll be here until probably about 11:30 if you want to come and get that pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: How long does it take?
CLINIC: Just a couple minutes. It’s just a urine test.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And what it tests for is a hormone that only pregnant women produce. So it’s pretty hard to get a false positive.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CLINIC: Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?
CLINIC: I can give you their number. Their number is 440-232-9732.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just worried because like, well, I’m going to be 14 years old next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of everything and he wouldn’t have to —
CLINIC: No, you actually need a parent. So you would actually need — his mother or your mom.
CALLER: Oh. Well, he lives on his own. He doesn’t live with his parents. And I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what they would do.
CLINIC: I can give you the number to where that you can go in front of a judge about a judicial bypass and talk to the judge. And he might grant it for you to get the abortion without telling your parents.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a fee for that. You would just have to pay for the abortion.
CALLER: Oh. Well, does he ever not grant that?
CLINIC: I’m not sure. I guess it depends on the situation.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to make sure?
CLINIC: Uh-huh. You can do that. We’re here from 12 to 6:30.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell my parents I was getting a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just the thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want my parents to know anything about all this. But if he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: Paying for what, the pregnancy test?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Actually, since you’re 14, it’s covered under a program that we have, so the pregnancy test would be free.
CALLER: Well, I’m not 14 yet. Like I’ll be 14 next month.
CLINIC: Right, so you’re 13. It’s covered.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But would anybody have to know about me and my boyfriend though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control — just so that we don’t have to go through all this again?
CLINIC: Yes. We would, once you come in here we’ll give you all the information in regards to birth control and set you up to get on birth control if you’re not pregnant.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to tell anybody about birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, another thing — well I can’t drive to pick up like birth control pills. Would my boyfriend be able to pick them up?
CLINIC: We have a mailing order form system. You can come and pick them up or you can get them mailed to his house.
CALLER: I could get them mailed to his house?
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Or you can come in and pick them up.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: Since you’re 14 years old — do you work?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: It’s covered under this program that we have, and all you have to do is leave a donation towards your visit.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Do you want to schedule an appointment?
CALLER: Well, I need to call my boyfriend and see, but can I call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Tamika.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. This is Deborah. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not at this clinic. They do it on the Bedford Clinic on Rockside Road.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?
CLINIC: Yes, I do if I can find it. (laughs) Okay, the phone number is 440-232-9732.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just worried about all this because like — well, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. In the state of Ohio, the way things are legally that’s not going to — he would not be able to sign off for that. But there are things, something called a juvenile bypass. What you need to do is go into one of our clinics, and take a pregnancy test so you have a statement of pregnancy, and they can give you all the information —
CALLER: Can I come in there for that?
CLINIC: You can do that here, yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We can give you all the information on how to go about it.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does that cost anything?
CLINIC: Actually — could you hold on a moment?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
(music)
CLINIC: Okay. Ma’am, yes, the pregnancy test is going to be $10.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No. That is nobody’s business but yours.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: We have strict confidentiality protocol.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but would you have to tell anybody that he was there and would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No. I mean, like I said, once again, it’s 100 percent confidentiality. No one could call up here, no one could come in here and ask if you were a patient or that if you had ever been here, anything. It’s none of their business. It’s complete confidentiality.
CALLER: Okay. So I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. So is it possible that I couldn’t be pregnant?
CLINIC: I mean, if you’ve had sex, yes. I mean, there’s always a possibility.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: I mean, no matter what. I mean, if you’ve had intercourse there’s a possibility of pregnancy.
CALLER: Oh. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes. You’d have to make an appointment for that, but yes you could.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But what I would advise you to do is to come in for a pregnancy test and see what’s going on. Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control, could like my boyfriend come in and pick up the pills?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: It’s just I cant’ drive yet, so.
CLINIC: No. Actually he cannot. We cannot give pills to anyone else but him (sic), and you have to see the clinician so you can get a prescription from her. We can’t honor somebody else’s prescription.
CALLER: Well, what about like refills or anything?
CLINIC: We cannot do that. It has to be from us.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: So you can walk in for the pregnancy test, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And we’re open until 8:00 p.m.
CALLER: Oh, all right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: What was your name again?
CLINIC: Deborah.
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Okay. Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)
CLINIC: Thanks for calling (unclear). How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: What was the first day of your last menstrual period?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: Okay, which means you are probably about nine weeks pregnant. Is there any insurance or public assistance you would use?
CALLER: Well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything with cash. So would he be able to do that, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Well, it’s not about the money. Ohio has a law, a parental notification law. If a woman is under 18, yes, you must have the signature of a parent or a legal guardian, or you can go through juvenile court and get something called a judicial bypass, in which case you don’t have to tell a parent.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Where do you live?
CALLER: I live in Cleveland Heights.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, do you have a pencil and paper?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Because I’m going to give you a couple phone numbers. And you can call juvenile court, and they can take care of that for you. And then you will not have to tell your parents. I need you to hold on for me one second.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Thanks.
RECORDING: — for information on writing school research papers. And health professionals, medical residents, social workers and graduate and undergraduate students come to observe and learn. Our commitment to education is one reason why so many women trust —
CLINIC: Thanks for waiting.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Got a pen?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. You can call — These are all 216 numbers. The general number is 443-3451. You can call Mike at 443-3452 or Doris at 698-6544. And they can take care of that for you. Now, when you come in, we’ll do an ultra sound. We do one on everybody. I assume, since you’re not telling parents, there’s no insurance you’ll be using, right?
CALLER: Right. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you’re anywhere from 4 through 12 weeks — and like I said, you’re probably about nine now — the fees are $350 with local anesthetic. That means that you’re awake and you know what’s going on during the abortion, but we numb your cervix. $415 if you wanted to have sedation, where we still numb your cervix, but then we also give you a sedative through an IV that makes you relaxed and groggy and kind of out of it, but not completely asleep. And it’s $465 if you wanted to be completely asleep. The actual abortion itself in the first trimester should take three to five minutes to perform. And those fees include everything – ultra sound, lab work, check out, birth control, all that sort of stuff.
CALLER: Well, do I need to pay for a lawyer to do the judicial thing?
CLINIC: No. Nuh-uh. No. It does not cost you anything. People think it’s this huge big deal and it will take weeks to do, and it’s not. They have to see you — I think it’s within 72 hours. So give them a call.
CALLER: So do they ever say no or anything?
CLINIC: The judge can, but here in *Cuyahoga County the judges are good about granting them.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And you’ll have a lawyer, something called a guardian ad litem, that’s appointed free to represent you through that.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would anyone have to know about him through all this?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Alright. So you guys would do a pregnancy test before everything and make sure I am pregnant?
CLINIC: Well, I’d encourage — Have you taken a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Ah, I’d encourage you to do that first of all. I mean, women can miss periods for other reasons.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: You can come here and do that. They’re free. You can just walk in. You can do that today up until 7:00 or Friday or Saturday between 9 and 1. And if you schedule an appointment to come for an abortion, we do an ultra sound. So we know not only that you’re pregnant but how many weeks pregnant you are.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant after taking a pregnancy test, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: Well, you can get it through our Planned Parenthood clinic, yes.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: No. In the state of Ohio it doesn’t matter how old you are, your parents do not have to be informed for you to get birth control.
CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure nobody has to know about my boyfriend either?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, what was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Heather. But anyone who answers the phone here can help you.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. And you said just to call you back after the judicial bypass?
CLINIC: Well, you can go ahead and schedule an appointment with us anytime. Again, I would suggest that you probably take a pregnancy test first. And you can call juvenile court and just get information, maybe kind of get an idea of how long that will take so you’ll know, you know, when to schedule it for. But I mean, we have appointments. We can always see you within a week.
CALLER: Do you ever do them on Saturdays?
CLINIC: We do.
CALLER: What time on Saturday?
CLINIC: Well, I’m assuming you want to do this all in one visit, right?
CALLER: Yes.
CLINIC: 7, 8, 9 10, 11 a.m.
CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, it’s just my boyfriend works from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, so.
CLINIC: Right. Saturday would be fine. And we have appointments available for next Saturday. Do you want to go ahead and make an appointment?
CALLER: Well, let me call and make sure with him, and then call you back. Is that all right?
CLINIC: Sure. Yeah, i’ll be here until 6:00.
CALLER: Well, do I need to call the juvenile people first?
CLINIC: You don’t have to, but I probably would and just kind of find out how that will go for you, how long that will take.
CALLER: All right. Okay. So, thanks.
CLINIC: Sure. No problem.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Center for Women’s Health?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Um-hmm. We do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: How many weeks?
CALLER: I’m not sure. How do you know?
CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: January 3rd. Today is the 7th. Okay. You would be in your ninth week. Do you get government assistance?
CALLER: Well, no. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend was wanting to take care of everything. Would you have to tell —
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on. One thing at a time. Do you get government assistance?
CALLER: No. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said that he would pay for everything.
CLINIC: Wait a second though. We’ve gotta get through — You need prices, okay? So we’ve got to get through one thing at a time, because I’ve got another person on hold too.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So you’re a student?
CALLER: Well, I’m home-schooled.
CLINIC: Okay. So it would be $315 to be awake, and it would be $375 to be asleep or sedated up to 12 weeks. That’s for up to 12 weeks. Now, what you need to do — where are you at, what city?
CALLER: I live in Cleveland Heights.
CLINIC: You need to call Cuyahoga County and get a judicial bypass.
CALLER: What is that?
CLINIC: That allows you to not tell your parents and get the procedure, since you don’t want to tell your parents. Because otherwise you have to bring your parents or you have to bring a legal guardian.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: I don’t know that it cost anything. But you need to call this number. Are you ready?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: 216-443-8400. Okay? Call them today. Call them as soon as you get off the phone with me. Tell them that you want to get an abortion, and you don’t want to let your parents know, and you want a judicial bypass.
CALLER: A judicial bypass?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do they ever not give it to people?
CLINIC: I don’t know whether they do or not, but you need to move on it so you can see what’s going to happen and find out.
CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and he was going to pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?
CLINIC: Everything is confidential, even if you have to fill out forms. You’re still going to have to do this because this is the law in Ohio.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want his name on anything.
CLINIC: What’s with your boyfriend?
CALLER: Huh?
CLINIC: What’s with your boyfriend?
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: I mean, like what’s going on that he doesn’t want his name, he doesn’t want this?
CALLER: Well, we just don’t want anyone to know about us. So we know that my name has to be on stuff, but we don’t really want his name on anything.
CLINIC: Okay, that’s fine. So fill it out so that his name’s not on it. It shouldn’t be asked anyway. It’s not anyone’s business.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So call. And you’re going to need to call them like right away and find out what’s going on as far as getting a judicial bypass, okay? And then call us back.
CALLER: Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure I am pregnant?
CLINIC: Yeah. And you should do a pregnancy test before you go through any of this stuff, unless you have reason to think otherwise.
CALLER: Well, do I come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: You can do that if you want to.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It’s free.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how soon would I know if I was pregnant?
CLINIC: Today. If you came in today, you’d know today.
CALLER: Well, how late are you guys open today?
CLINIC: Just come in by 4:00. We’ll do them until then. You need to get here before 4.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: You might need to go to Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, all right. But would they have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: I would have to find out about that. I have to take another line right now.
CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call the people and then call you back. What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Deb. But you may not be able to reach me. I’ll be in with patients.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Cleveland Surgi-Center. Dee speaking. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: Do you have private insurance through your job?
CALLER: Do what?
CLINIC: Do you have private insurance through your job?
CALLER: Well, no. I don’t have a job. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, no, no. We can’t touch you. Your parents have to sign for that. Your boyfriend can’t sign for nothing.
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: Because you are a minor. You is not that man’s child. You is just his woman. If he sign for it, then we will be in trouble. If the state come in, they will shut us down, hon. We cannot let your boyfriend sign for anything. Your parents have to do it.
CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents. I mean, if they found out — I mean, they know we’re going out. He works with my dad. But if they found out we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: Then I can’t help you because your parents have to know, at least one of them. Because one of them have to sign for it.
CALLER: Well, is there any way not to have to tell them at all?
CLINIC: No, there’s no way.
CALLER: Oh. Well, could I go someplace else?
CLINIC: Nobody can do it. Nobody, because your parents have to sign for it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant?
CLINIC: Yes. Yes, you can. You can come in tomorrow between the hours of 8 and 12.
CALLER: But would anybody have to tell anybody if I was there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No, no. Now that they won’t know.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So nobody would have to know about my boyfriend and me or anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: No. You have to go to Planned Parenthood for birth control. If you’re not a patient of ours, we don’t give it, unless you want to go through our family planning, which we would have to charge you $175. And I don’t even know if we can do that without parent consent.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Hold on. Hold on.
CLINIC (Talking To Another Clinic Worker): Hey Glenner (?), can we see a 14-year-old for family planning?
CLINIC BACKGROUND: I don’t think so.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second. The woman I need to ask just went in the bathroom. Can you hold?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: What was your last period, hon?
CALLER: January 3rd.
CLINIC: January 3rd?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay. You will be about 9 or 10 weeks. Okay, hold on.
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
RECORDING: Thank you for calling the Cleveland Surgi-Center, the center of choice for area hospitals and doctors. You’ll find us conveniently located at 3535 Lee Road, just one block south of Chagrin Boulevard in Shaker Heights. For over 24 years our caring and experienced staff has been providing women in the area —
CLINIC: Hello?
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: No, we can’t do it. You would have to have your parents — now we can do the pregnancy test. You can come in for a pregnancy test. But other than that, we cannot offer no more services to you if you don’t have your parents with you.
CALLER: Oh. But you’re sure nobody has to know about my boyfriend if we come in for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Nobody will know about the pregnancy test. But if you wanted to do the abortion thing, your parents will know because they have to come in and sign for it.
CALLER: Oh. Well, maybe I can talk to my parents. I’m not sure. But can I call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: Dee.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
