CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: There are places from Youngstown on. We do have a listing of some different ones. If you’re wanting to stop in and pick up a listing, you’re more than welcome to. And they have the names, the addresses and the numbers on there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you some questions?

CLINIC: Actually we don’t do anything like that, so I mean I probably really can’t answer your question. What kind of question did you want to ask?

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just say whatever they need, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know what? I would have no idea.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I don’t know. You know, with you being under — I really don’t know. Actually, what you probably would need to, you know, either call those places and find out or whatever. But I would have no idea, because we don’t deal with anything like that.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared cause, well, my last period was like December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just worried.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well —

CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, we can do a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, no. No, we can do that. That’s the only thing we can do. And then we can give you papers on — if that’s what you want to do, termination, or continue pregnancy or whatever, then we can do that. Let me see. I don’t have anything today. Could you come in Monday morning?

CALLER: I think so. But would it be all right if both me and my boyfriend came in?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, he can come with you; that’s not a problem.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Could you come in like 9:00 Monday morning?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. With a “C” or a “K”?

CALLER: A “Ch.”

CLINIC: And your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. And you’ve never been here before; is that correct?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. What I would need for you to do, Christine, is I would need for you to collect your first morning urine. Put it in a clean, air-tight container and bring it with you. I don’t care what kind of container it is, just make sure it’s good and clean and it’s got a good-fitting lid on it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in for birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. If the test would become negative, what could we do is then we could schedule you. We can’t do anything on Monday because we don’t have a nurse practitioner here on Mondays. But what we could do is get you in here, then we could set up an appointment for you. And we could —

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through this again.

CLINIC: Right, right. Yeah. My suggestion would be that’s what you need to do.

CALLER: All right. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, no, no. Everything here is confidential whether you’re 15 or you’re 82. Everything here is confidential. So, no. No one would know. We would not be calling your parents or anything of that nature.

CALLER: Okay. So let me call my boyfriend and see. Could I call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Beth.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you know what, I penciled you in; and see if that will be okay. If it won’t, then you can, you know, call me back and see what else we can do for you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We have a couple names of clinics in Akron that does those.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I could give you the name and number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s Akron Women’s Medical Group, and it’s 1-800-428-2673.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And the other Akron Women’s Med Center is 1-800-362-9150.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they would have to tell my parents? Like my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they have to tell my parents. But like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: No, because he is not your legal guardian, so it would have to be parents.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them, because if they found out they would be furious.

CLINIC: No. There is a way to get, go, get a judicial bypass, and I’m not quite sure on the procedure of that.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You’d have to go before a judge and prove that you were competent to take care of yourself and that you know what you’re doing. I’m not quite sure what it all involves.

CALLER: Do they ever say no?

CLINIC: Yeah, they do.

CALLER: Yeah? Well, what would I do then?

CLINIC: Well, there really isn’t anything you could do, you know, aside from having a baby and either giving it up for adoption or keep it, you know. There isn’t anything you can do.

CALLER: Well, is it okay to come in to there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. No. Everything we do here is confidential, so no one would know unless you release, you know, wanted to release that information.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it okay if my boyfriend brings me because I wouldn’t know how else to get there.

CLINIC: Yes. We’d have to schedule an appointment. You’ve never been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Would you guys have to say anything about him to anyone?

CLINIC: No. No. Nothing is released here, you know, without your permission.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried that my parents will find out, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me get your information — your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith. But you’re sure nobody has to find out at all about anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. Everything is kept confidential here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only way they would know is if they see you come in here or someone you know would see you, you know, and tell them. But otherwise they wouldn’t know from any of us here because it jeopardizes our job if anyone would ever know from any of us.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So that’s pretty sure. (laughs) I’m not about to risk my job for someone. I’m sorry. (laughs) Okay. And your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: With a “C” or a “K”?

CALLER: A “C-H”.

CLINIC: And your birth date?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: And your address?

CALLER: Do I have to tell you that?

CLINIC: Well, we need an address. At some time. You can tell when you come in here, but they will need an address.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We don’t mail anything to the house. I’ll put it on here —

CALLER: Could I give you like the address of a friend?

CLINIC: When you come — well, yes, you can give it and then let them know when you come in that it’s a friend.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And the address then?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know it. I’d have to get it. But is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: This is Jean.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: You’d have to call one of the offices in Columbus.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: You’d have to refer to the yellow pages.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like, well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Your parents anything – to have any procedure done like that under the age of 18, your parents have to sign no matter what.

CALLER: Oh. So there’s no way to not have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. But I — could I come in there for a pregnancy test? I just, I’m scared about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yeah. Can you come in today like at 3:00?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But would you have to tell my parents about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend was there with me?

CLINIC: That would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, we were talking about all this and we don’t want my parents to know about any of this. So —

CLINIC: Well, if you have a positive pregnancy test, in order to have an abortion done you have to tell your parents, regardless.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though just so that —

CLINIC: You’d have to schedule another appointment to come in and get an exam and stuff done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me see if I can come in today. What was your name so I can call you back?

CLINIC: I’m the only one here, so it’s okay. You can come in at 3:00 if you can. If not, that’s okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So just call my boyfriend and then call you back?

CLINIC: You don’t have to call me back. You can just come in at 3:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what if I couldn’t come in? Could I —

CLINIC: That’s okay.

CALLER: Well, are you guys open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No. I won’t be open again until Monday.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, are you going to be there on Monday?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just called another place yesterday, and they told me to call you guys. So I was just making sure I called the right people. Do you know like how much that cost?

CLINIC: Between 5 and 14 weeks it’s $395.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my last period was like the 14th of December. Do you know how many weeks that would be?

CLINIC: December 14th, and today is February 20th. You’re about nine-and-a-half weeks.

CALLER: Okay. So how much would that be?

CLINIC: $395.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to do that?

CLINIC: No. No, he’s not old enough to sign for you. You would have to have your parents.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have my parents know?

CLINIC: No —

CALLER: Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: — it’s a state law. And the only way around that state law is to go to court in front of a judge. It’s called a judicial bypass. And you would explain to a judge why you couldn’t tell your parents that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. Would he say that it’s all right?

CLINIC: Well, it depends. He could or he couldn’t. Where are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in Forest Park.

CLINIC: He could or he could say no, and you have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: The law in Ohio is parental notification. They can’t say yes or they can’t say no, they just have to be made aware. Okay?

CALLER: Oh. Well, they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right. Well, the only other step you have, ma’am, is to go to court. And that means that a judge will make that decision. You will have to speak with our social worker, and they would set you up with an attorney, and you will go to court and speak to the judge.

CALLER: Does it cost anything for an attorney?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. That’s the only other way around your parents not knowing.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend? It’s a possibility. I don’t know exactly what questions that the judge asks. I don’t know.

CALLER: Well, would you have to say anything about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: If your boyfriend’s 22 and you’re 14? Um-hmm.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Well, because —

CALLER: What do you mean? Why would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Is there something wrong with that?

CLINIC: Is there something wrong with a 22-year-old being with a 14-year-old? He’s a grown man and you’re a minor.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, okay. I’m not going to argue with you about it. I’m just saying that is against the law, but that’s only between you and whoever else you tell.

CALLER: Well, could we get in trouble? Like what would happen?

CLINIC: You possibly could. He possibly could.

CALLER: Like what kind of trouble? What could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah, for statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know. I’m just telling you, that’s the repercussions. That’s what could happen, if somebody took it that far.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would it be all right if he brought me in to get the pregnancy test? Because I don’t know how else that I would get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, he can take you to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would he get in trouble if he brought me?

CLINIC: Would he get in trouble if he brought you to get a pregnancy test? It depends on whatever you tell people. I mean, it depends on what you say to people.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, what should I say?

CLINIC: I mean, I can’t tell you what (chuckle) — I can’t tell you want to say. I can only tell you if you need a pregnancy test. And if you go in and someone asks you, and whatever you tell them, they’ll do whatever based on the information that you give them. Okay?

CALLER: Oh. But you wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t know you, so I couldn’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I did come in for a pregnancy test, and say it was negative and I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s done in our medical clinic.

CALLER: Well, would I have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Would you have to tell your parents you’re on birth control? Uh-uh, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How do you know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my — I missed my period, so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. But you want to take a test first, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: What’s your name? Could I call you back?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t work where the pregnancy tests are, so you need to call that clinic. Let me give you that number – 287-6484.

CALLER: Okay. But if my boyfriend had any questions, could I call and ask you?

CLINIC: Anybody can help you.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Connie.

CLINIC: The thing is, when you call them, talk to them. They tell you how they can work around that.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just not really sure if I am pregnant. I just haven’t had my period for a while. Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yes. They’re $11, and you can come in up to 1:30. And tomorrow we’re open between 9 and 1:30 for that.
