(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. Lisa speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We refer you to Plattsburgh.

CALLER: To where?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s 561-4430. But we do do the pregnancy test and all the exams that need to be done before the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried about all this because like, well my friend told me that since like — well, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. We don’t need any parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, so you don’t — we won’t say anything to your parents unless you tell us to say something to your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So, well, it’s just, the thing is that me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. But he said that he was going to pay for everything. Would that be all right if he was there?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. You can have whoever you want.

CALLER: Okay. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. We don’t need anybody’s signature but yours.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what time do you normally do like pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We can do a pregnancy — I can do a pregnancy test for you tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Then we can do an exam for you on Monday, but we can do it all on Monday if you want to just come in the one time.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see, but —

CLINIC: Monday and Thursdays are the days that we’re here to do exams.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yup.

CALLER: What time on Monday?

CLINIC: Monday I’ve only got one left — 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And on Thursday I’m not quite sure what’s left on the schedule that day.

CALLER: Well, could I go ahead and be penciled in on like the Monday, 4:00 one?

CLINIC: You want to schedule the Monday? Okay. Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re going to have to take down some information from you, and I’ve got a girl training that I want her to work on the computer.

CALLER: Well, can I ask you one quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yep, as long as you — we do the exam and everything, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried of —

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So can you hold on a second?

CALLER: Okay. Well, are you there?

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi. This is Barb. I’m the one that’s training.

CALLER: Okay. What was the name of the lady that I was just talking to?

CLINIC: That was Lisa.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And I’m Barb. And I’m going to need your name?

CALLER: Oh, well, it’s Christine.

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: And your last name is?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: And your first name is Christine. With a “C”, Christine?

CALLER: A “C-H”.

CLINIC: “C-H”. And middle initial?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: What did you ask?

CLINIC: Middle initial.

CALLER: Oh. “M”.

CLINIC: And your address?

CALLER: What was that?

CLINIC: Your address?

CALLER: Oh, well, I wasn’t wanting to actually — could I give you my boyfriend’s address? It’s just, he’s moving to a new apartment, and I don’t know it yet, but we wanted to use that address.

CLINIC: Hold on just a minute. Christine?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: What’s your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Did you ever call and make an appointment in Plattsburgh before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Because we’ve got you in the computer under Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hang on a second. Let me just pull up and see what information they’ve got. Okay? Hang on. 3/19/88?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I have Redford, New York. Is that right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t think so. I mean, I’ve never been there.

CLINIC: You’ve never lived in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No. I’m in Tupper Lake. Well, when I went to get my Social Security card they said there were actually a lot of Christine Smiths. So I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your middle initial?

CALLER: “M.”

CLINIC: “M”?

CALLER: Yep.

CLINIC: Yeah. Same thing.

CALLER: I don’t know. That’s just weird. Where is that place that, that appointment?

CLINIC: Redford?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh office? Is that what you’re asking?

CALLER: Yeah. Where is that?

CLINIC: It’s on Brinkerhoff Street. It’s Planned Parenthood in Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’ll put you in under a new patient for us.

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend was calling some places, but could he make an appointment for me?

CLINIC: I can’t tell if it was an appointment made in Plattsburgh, but do you think he called and made the appointment in Plattsburgh?

CALLER: I don’t know. I mean, he told me to do all the calling, but —

CLINIC: Who lives in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No one that I know.

CLINIC: He doesn’t?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: He doesn’t? You guys live in Tupper?

CALLER: I live in Tupper, Tupper Lake.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll just add you in here. It’s no big deal. Let’s see here. Okay. I’m going to give you back to Barb and she’ll get the rest of the information from you. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Yeah, we have to have an address because, you can give us your home address. We won’t send anything to you.

CALLER: Oh, well, I just really didn’t want to do that.

CLINIC: We need to have it. So we need to have some address.

CALLER: Well, let me talk to my boyfriend and see. Is that all right if I call and talk to him and call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute.

(pause)

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Where is your boyfriend moving to?

CALLER: He’s getting an apartment, so.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He hasn’t decided between the two, but. I don’t know which one he’s going to pick.

CLINIC: But is he staying in Tupper?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you know what road?

CALLER: Right now?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What’s Tupper Lake’s zip code?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Where’d you move from?

CALLER: From Texas.

CLINIC: Let’s see.

CALLER: I think my boyfriend actually might have a brother that lives in Plattsburgh.

CLINIC: In Plattsburgh?

CALLER: Yeah, maybe. I think that’s where he said he was.

CLINIC: Well, we’ll put Tupper Lake. When you come in we’ll need a street address.

CALLER: Okay. But would you guys mail anything to like my parents though?

CLINIC: No. If you don’t want us to mail anything, we’re not going to — we’re not going to contact your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what would you need the address for then?

CLINIC: It’s the computer, for information.

CALLER: For what?

CLINIC: If we need to contact you. If there’s a problem we need to get ahold of you, how do we get ahold of you?

CALLER: Well, could I just — should I get like a cellphone then or something?

CLINIC: Well, if we send you mail, is it okay to send it in a blank envelope? Do your parents open your mail?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, I usually don’t get mail. They just open whatever comes.

CLINIC: Okay. So we won’t send mail. How about if we call you? Can we call and ask and say, can we talk to Christine? And if they say you’re not home, we’ll say okay, we’ll give her a call back later?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: We’re not going to say, this is Planned Parenthood calling.

CALLER: I don’t know. I just don’t know that that would be such a good idea. I’m just worried that — I just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. So we’ll put down that we won’t contact your house at all. But then we need some place, someone to contact to let you know that we’re trying to get ahold of you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I give you all my boyfriend’s information, and then he could contact me through that?

CLINIC: That’s — yes. We can do that. If you have your boyfriend’s information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m supposed to see him at lunch today. Could I just call you after that?

CLINIC: Well, yeah. Why don’t we do that? Get all his info — you know, his address and phone number, and then give us a call back, and that’s what we’ll put into the computer, and we won’t put any of your home stuff in there.

CALLER: Okay. Would there be anything else you would need besides all that?

CLINIC: I just need your Social Security number and like your date of birth and just some other information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just statistic reasons that you’ll know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So just get that stuff, Christine, and give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, our clinic doesn’t.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know of who I would call or anything?

CLINIC: You can schedule a pregnancy test here first and you can talk to a counselor and talk about your options. We can send you to another one of our Planned Parenthoods to actually have the surgery, but you could have everything done here except for the surgery.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because I’ll be 14 in March, so.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test from the store and it came out positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s schedule you for a pregnancy test first with us.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys have to tell my parents or anything, because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married, and we love each other. But my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Okay. I can get you in tomorrow at 4:00.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’d have to call him and see if he can —

CLINIC: Okay. Can you do that? Because we may give this appointment away before you call us back. So you need to call us back right away, okay?

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t really talk to him until he gets off of work today, but you guys wouldn’t tell my parents or anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turns out that I wasn’t pregnant do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Right, but it wouldn’t be at this appointment. You’d have to set up a separate appointment to do that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: All right. So is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yep. That’s fine.

CALLER: All right. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sandy.

CALLER: Sandy? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I’ll talk to you later.

CLINIC: Okay, bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

RECORDING: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood in Schenectady. If you know the extension of the person you are calling, you may dial it at any time. To access our company directory, press the # key. To make an appointment, press 1. If you feel this is a medical emergency — One moment please.

CLINIC: Appointments. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was actually wondering, like do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. I want you to speak with a counselor, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hang on.

(phone ringing)

CLINIC: Hi. This is a counselor. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Yeah? Okay. Do you know like how much it cost?

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you interested in having a termination?

CALLER: Yeah. Me and my boyfriend were talking about it, and we think that’s the best to do.

CLINIC: Okay. The first thing you need to do is you need to make sure you’re pregnant. So you need to have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Is there like an age requirement for that?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. I suggest you take a pregnancy test. And then if that comes out positive, then call us. Because you don’t want to get all upset for nothing if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Well, I actually did. I took one over the weekend so.

CLINIC: And was it positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So then, yes, you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can’t think you’re pregnant. You are pregnant. Okay. What needs to happen is you need to come in for a pre-op exam. You’d have an ultra sound done to determine exactly how far along you are. You’d have a pelvic exam done to make sure medically everything is okay. And you meet with a counselor who’d go over the procedure with you step by step and who would schedule you for a surgery.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, since you are 14, you are eligible for PCAP, which is temporary Medicaid.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s going to pay for it. He’s 22. He can take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you automatically qualify for temporary Medicaid.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody about it if I was on that?

CLINIC: The only thing is, I cannot guarantee your confidentiality a hundred percent, because we do have to use your mailing address.

CALLER: Well then, I wouldn’t be able to do that at all. Like my parents can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, I can’t guarantee your confidentiality a hundred percent when it comes to temporary Medicaid. The only way to guarantee your confidentiality is to pay cash.

CALLER: Well, okay. Like my boyfriend said he would do that.

CLINIC: Okay. The pre-op exam is around 150, and the surgery is like 380 and up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s due then too.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay, so do you want to make an appointment for a pre-op exam?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay. Just call us back.

CALLER: Is there any way — like say that I did the pregnancy test wrong or whatever, do you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yep, we sure do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right, you got it.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Okay, do you want to make an appointment? We have one for Monday — because our first appointment is not until Monday, March 4th. We have a 5:00 or a 5:30.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I would have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My last period was actually like the first week in December. Do you know like —

CLINIC: Going by December 1st —

CALLER: Yeah. Do you know how much that would cost or anything?

CLINIC: Well, going by December 1st, you are — see you’re 10-plus weeks.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You really need to get in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can’t wait. That’s the only thing.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And to let you know, your partner’s not allowed in the room or anything.

CALLER: Oh, but is it all right if he came — can he bring me?

CLINIC: He can bring you, yep. Okay?

CALLER: And nobody’s going to tell on him or anything?

CLINIC: Tell on him?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Why, because of his age?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I mean, if you don’t tell anybody how old he is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Basically, I can’t guarantee you that. I mean, if someone feels that he is endangering the welfare of a minor, which you are — you are a minor — that’s something different.

CALLER: Would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t really go into that. I don’t know.

CALLER: Oh. Alright.

CLINIC: You know, number one, he is a lot older than you. Correct? Do your parents know?

CALLER: Well, they know him. They just don’t like him because they think he’s too old. You don’t think he’s too old, do you?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t go into that. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: I mean, you are a minor; he is of age.

CALLER: If I don’t tell anybody there, they won’t do anything?

CLINIC: Well, I mean, they shouldn’t anyway. The first thing you need to get rid of — you need to have a termination if that’s what you want. And you need to worry about that. You can’t worry about if someone’s going to get in trouble or not.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: You need to take care of this problem.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I talk to him, and then call you back?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, I might not be available to talk to you. You just need to speak to a counselor. Okay? And then tell them you need to make an appointment for a pre-op exam.

CALLER: Is it okay if I talk to you? I just don’t want to talk to anybody else.

CLINIC: Okay. But I can’t guarantee you for the appointment that you’ll be able to see me.

CALLER: Oh. Well, can I talk to you later today after I talk to him?

CLINIC: That’s fine. Just push 145 and ask to speak to me. My name’s Tricia (sp).

CALLER: Tricia?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only thing is, like I said, our first appointment is March. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you want to get back to me as soon as you can because we want to get you in as soon as we can.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And think about temporary Medicaid because it will pay for it. But the only thing is, like I said, we have to use your mailing address, well, your permanent residency where you live. We can use a different mailing address.

CALLER: I wouldn’t be able to tell you that. I can’t let anyone know.

CLINIC: How come?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want to get in trouble. My parents, if they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex, they would freak.

CLINIC: Right, okay. And then that’s fine. Everything here is strictly confidential. We’re not going to give out any information to anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay, that’s why we don’t even have your partner come in the rooms and stuff, because there are some things that they might not know. And we want to make sure that this is what you want to do. Do you know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And also, going on temporary Medicaid, you will qualify because you’re under 18.

CALLER: Even if he’s going to pay for everything?

CLINIC: Well, it’s up to you if you want him to pay for everything. I had to let you know that that is an option. It would cover it, and you wouldn’t have to pay a thing. But if you’re scared, then that’s fine. He can pay for it. But just to let you know, when you come in here to fill out paperwork, you have to use your real name and your real address.

CALLER: Is it okay to use like his address?

CLINIC: No. You really need your own in case there’s an emergency and we need to get in contact with you. You have to use your real information. Everything is strictly confidential.

CALLER: What kind of emergency?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I’m just using that for an example.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Like say you fall down and break your leg. Your boyfriend’s not going to be able to take you to the hospital and sign papers. The only person that’s going to be able to do that is a parent. You know what I mean? Stuff like that. So we have to have your real name and stuff like that. And like I said, everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So I’ll call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: What was your name?

CALLER: I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. Is that you real name?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, Christine.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Coney Island Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: No? Do you know where I should go for that?

CLINIC: (Sigh) What you need to do is you need to have a confirmation from a doctor or clinic saying that you are indeed pregnant. And then if you came here and had that test done then we would give you the counseling and names of places you could go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you already had that done somewhere else?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that’s what you need to do for your first step, is make that appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to do that here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend because he’s the one that would bring me.

CLINIC: All right. So what you need is a pregnancy test. And then if you are indeed pregnant, they will tell you what your options are and where you can go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is there any age limit for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Like I’ll be 14 in March. Is that —

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: That’s all right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: Everything that’s done here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out at all cause like my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: But there’s no way that anybody would find out at all, right?

CLINIC: Not to the best of my knowledge. No one from here would tell anyone anything. Your visit here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Do you guys do birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And it’s all right to get that?

CLINIC: Let’s say you’re not pregnant, or you are pregnant and you go have a termination elsewhere and you come back here as a patient. You would need to have a full exam, and at your current age, there would be no charge to you. And then they would get you started on appropriate birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Alright. Is it okay if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: You can. I’m only here to 5 myself. All you have to do is say you’d like a pregnancy — you don’t even have to go into all this. You just you’d like to make an appointment for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it okay, like if my boyfriend has questions, if I call you back —

CLINIC: He can come with you if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But like if he wanted to talk to someone over the phone too, could he talk to you too?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t really do any of the counseling, so I don’t have any — You know, I can just make you an appointment. And as much as we’ve discussed, you and I just now, is really all that I would be able to talk to you about.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But you can certainly bring him with you. And if you want, he can come even in the room with you, and he can listen to everything that the nurse says. That’s entirely up to you.

CALLER: I just don’t want to talk to like a whole bunch of people about this.

CLINIC: That’s fine. And that’s what we do here. So you don’t need to feel awkward doing it. As I said, if you want to make an appointment right now, I’ll help you do that. If you want to talk to him and call back, I’m here until 5, and my name’s Linda. Or you can call tomorrow between 8:30 and 5, and I’ll be here then too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or you can just call any time and ask for a pregnancy appointment. You don’t have to tell anybody any of the rest of this.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: 450.

CALLER: 450?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Alright. Like you guys don’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: He’s got a job. He’s like 22. He’s going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But like they just can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: No. We’re not allowed to tell anybody, hon.

CALLER: Anybody? Alright.

CLINIC: Anybody, unless you give us permission to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys like do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend might have some questions, but like can I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Phyllis.

CALLER: Phyllis?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood, (unclear). How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost?

CLINIC: 460 for the procedure, but that does not include your options counseling and pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. What does the options cost or whatever?

CLINIC: The what? Options counseling and pregnancy test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s based upon your income and family size.

CALLER: Okay. So they have to know about my family?

CLINIC: No. They have to know — if you’re working, you have to bring in a pay stub and a picture i.d.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s what we mean by based upon your income and family size, meaning how many does that support.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t have a job or anything. I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Do you have any insurance?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he was going to pay for it. He’s got a job and everything. He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. Probably it will be anywhere from 477 for everything.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys don’t have to tell my parents or anybody at all?

CLINIC: No, nothing at all, sweetheart.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: It’s just they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Everything done here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. Everything done here is confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. It is okay, like if my boyfriend has a question, if I can call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Yeah? Well, is it all right if I talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Celia (ph).

CALLER: Celia?

CLINIC: Mm-hmm.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Yep. You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
