CLINIC: Good morning. Rise (sp) Office.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: That would be the clinic. They don’t open until 12:30 on Monday.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Would you like that number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: 794-3704.

CALLER: 3704?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

(phone clicks)

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Rise Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I just called. I was actually wondering if I could ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: They’re clinical questions?

CALLER: Just — well, I don’t know. I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do, and I just wanted to ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: Okay, I’ll try. I’m not sure that I can help you. There is no medical personnel up here. We’re the education department.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’m just really scared because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just scared that I’m pregnant and I don’t know what to do. And my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March, she said that they would have to tell my parents. But I can’t tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just like sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah, you don’t have to tell your parents. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No. When you come in to make an appointment with the clinic or whatever, we have a booklet on the rights of minors in the state of New York. They have the right to make their own healthcare choices.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you do not have to tell them, and the medical personnel in the clinic is bound by confidentiality to not report it either.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You could arrange with them on how to communicate whether by phone or by mail or whatever, so that it’s kept confidential. But they’ll discuss all that with you. There’s, on Thursday — I don’t know if you want to wait that long– but on Thursday afternoon the clinic has a walk-in for teens.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But you could call them and say you might want to get in before that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about anything, like —

CLINIC: And they won’t. They don’t need to. Nobody from this end will tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to ask questions about him or anything either?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: I can’t answer that 100 percent. I don’t imagine you need him to make any of those decisions; if he wants to be involved he can.

CALLER: Oh. Yeah. I would just feel better if he was there with me.

CLINIC: Certainly. I mean, I don’t think there’s any questions he needs to ask, but he can certainly accompany you and sit with you in the waiting room. They don’t do that procedure here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But they will have you come in and do your health workup and whatever, and then they’ll give you the paperwork and you’ll have to go to one of our other clinics to have the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like say that maybe I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Yep. Yep.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. You have those rights to make all those decisions. Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: It’s in writing, so if anybody was to question you about that, the New York Civil Liberties Union publishes a booklet for minors and it explains all that stuff, that they do not have to get anyone’s permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Okay? The only problem you might have is if you’re trying to use your health insurance.

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. So that might go back to the person who holds the policy which is probably your parents, and in that case it would be hard to keep it confidential. But if you’re going to pay by cash or money order or check or some other means — and they do do sliding scale here. So if you’re a minor and you have no income or whatever, tell them all that stuff. And they’ll work with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But, yeah, the confidentiality part is not an issue. No one at this end is ever going to disclose it to anyone. They are bound by New York state law to not. So, just so you know, feel comfortable with that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Yeah, I’ll bet you are. Yeah. But don’t worry. They’ll take care of you, and, you know, they’ve had people in your age bracket many times. So they’re used to it. They’re a nice bunch of girls down there. They’re all women.

CALLER: Oh, well, you’ve been a lot of help. Thanks. What was your name?

CLINIC: Maggie.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Yeah, I’m upstairs. We’re upstairs. We’re the Rape Crisis Center and the Health Education Department. The clinic is on the first floor. We’re at 14 Prince Street now. I don’t know if you know where the old building was. We’re one building down. They moved one building over.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But call them at 12:30. That’s when they open, and they’re open until 7:00 tonight I think.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Alrighty?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good luck. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys — Well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not in this office.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: You’d have to come in for an exam, and then you’d get a referral.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to do that? Do you want to come in?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just worried about all this because, well, I’m going to be 14 this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Your parents would not be informed about that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No, your girlfriend’s not correct on that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I —

CLINIC: The best thing I would suggest that you do is to come in for an exam and start from square one, and just take it from there.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just —

CLINIC: Okay? You want to do that?

CALLER: I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it possible that I am not pregnant?

CLINIC: It could be possible. It could be anything really, but what you need to do is just to get tested first. So why don’t you do that, and —

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that? I just didn’t know that the ones at the store were right.

CLINIC: Could you what? I’m sorry, what?

CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I didn’t know that the ones in the store were all that right, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. No, you’re better off doing it that way. They are more accurate here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much do those cost?

CLINIC: I have to find that out for you. Can you hang on one second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Hi. You know, we have a teen clinic today from 2:30 to 5:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Where are you from?

CALLER: I live in Liberty.

CLINIC: In Liberty? That would be free for you actually to come in for an exam for the test.

CALLER: Well, do I need an appointment?

CLINIC: No. You can walk in today anywhere from 2:30 to 5:00 today and it would be free.

CALLER: Okay, and nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: And nobody would know anything that you don’t want them to know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Would I get it like today or —

CLINIC: That would be determined from the doctor, what she does with that.

CALLER: Oh. It’s just, we don’t want to have to —

CLINIC: According to what the date of your last period is, okay? That would be my suggestion because that’s the best bet for you if money is a problem. That’s your option that you can come in anywhere from 2:30 to 5:00 today and it’s free because of where you live.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you’re under 19, so.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he was going to pay for everything like if I could get birth control or whatever, and — but he doesn’t want to have to sign anything because we don’t —

CLINIC: No. That, no. That wouldn’t be necessary.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And if that were the case, if it was birth control after that, I think it’s around like $40.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I need to call him to see — do you know actually if I was on birth control — I just can’t drive yet. Would he be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Sure, he would. You’d have to come in for the exam initially.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But then he can come in and pick up the pills for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions, but —

CLINIC: That’s fine, and, then come in for that, just for that reason alone, even if you don’t want anything else done and you just want to talk to somebody.

CALLER: Well, could I talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Dawn.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. Hopefully I’ll see you later.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Hello, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys — Well, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t. We do it at White Plains and in our New Rochelle Centers.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you need those phone numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. White Plains is 761-6566, and New Rochelle is 632-4442.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, can I ask you a question?

CLINIC: Actually, we’re closed today, so I probably wouldn’t be able to answer it. What is it?

CALLER: Oh. Well I just was told, like, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion.

CLINIC: No, that’s not true.

CALLER: Not at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Well, it’s just the problem is like my parents can’t find out at all because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married because we’re in love. But like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old. But there’s just no way that they can find out.

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential. Okay? And when you call the center, you can just verify that. I’m telling you that that’s the truth. Okay?

CALLER: Is there any age requirement to have an abortion or anything?

CLINIC: No. But you might want to ask these questions to the center that actually perform the abortion. I don’t really want to misinform you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, cause I’m going to be 14 in March. I don’t know if they would —

CLINIC: I don’t think so. But again, you might want to ask them these questions because we don’t do abortions here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you don’t think that they would tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Yeah? And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No, it’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Alright?

CALLER: If my boyfriend has questions, can I call you back?

CLINIC: I would suggest that you call the center that does abortions. We don’t do abortions here. I gave you those two phone numbers. If you have questions, I think that they’re better at answering them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you can just give them a call. Okay? We’re closed today. So I’m just gonna, you know, refer you to them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Take care.

CALLER: Well, like —

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: What’s wrong? What’s the problem?

CALLER: Well, I was just really not wanting to talk to too many people about this. Is there any way that he could ask you questions?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not even suppose to be answering the phones here today.

CALLER: Oh. How come?

CLINIC: It’s all anonymous. You just need to call those centers. Okay? I promise that everything is confidential.

CALLER: Are they going to be as nice as you?

CLINIC: Yes, they’re very nice. Okay? So you just need to call those centers.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And they’ll be able to answer any questions. I don’t know your name. They’re not going to ask for your name unless you choose to make an appointment. So it’s all confidential. There’s also an education department there, and they can spend as much time on the phone with you as you need. I’m basically the cleaning staff here. I wouldn’t be able to give you any good answers.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So just give them a call. They’ll be able to help you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Good luck with everything.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No. You can call this number though.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: I can give you a number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 632-4442. That’s New Rochelle. And White Plains is 761-6566.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask a question?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, that’s not true. How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Do you know you’re pregnant already?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: You can come in here for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: I got one at the store over the weekend.

CLINIC: No. But you need a writ out sheet stating that you’re pregnant, a proof out sheet stating that you’re pregnant. Then you take it to New Rochelle or White Plains. Or where you live?

CALLER: I live in Polling (ph).

CLINIC: Polling?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Where is that at? It’s in Westchester?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Is it in Westchester?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You don’t have no Planned Parenthood around you?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anyone to know where I am — I just don’t want anyone to see me.

CLINIC: Oh. So where would you rather go? Because you need to get a pregnancy test first. What’s closer, Mount Vernon or New Rochelle, White Plains?

CALLER: Well, I just really wanted to go there. Like that’s where my friend said to go.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: To where you guys are at.

CLINIC: Mount Vernon?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: All right. The only thing we do is the pregnancy test, and we give you the proof sheet that you’re pregnant. You have to take that to New Rochelle or White Plains to get the abortion done. When was your last period?

CALLER: Well, I’m not sure how long. It was before Christmas. I think it was like probably maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. So you can’t wait a lot of time either, because we only do up to 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you have to come in. How old are you? Fourteen, right?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March? How do you get to travel? Your mother lets you travel?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend will take me. He’s 22. He can drive.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Your mother know you got a 22-year-old boyfriend?

CALLER: Well, she doesn’t like him.

CLINIC: Oh. You’re too young! You’re only 13! I know I shouldn’t be telling you this, right? All right. He can bring you to Mount Vernon. We do the pregnancy test. You can come any time for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody has to know about it?

CLINIC: Nobody has to know. And after that, you can either go to New Rochelle on Thursday, because it’s going to be early in the morning — but you go to school — or you can go to White Plains, or you know, skip school or whatever.

CALLER: Oh. Well, alright.

CLINIC: So you can either do Thursday New Rochelle, Saturday, White Plains. Okay?

CALLER: If like say I wasn’t pregnant; do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep. We do birth control.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. You need to really consider — but what would you want? You would want probably like to get a shot or something, or you could take pills and hide them from your mother.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: I don’t know. We’ll go over that when you come here. They give you a package, things you can read about.

CALLER: But you’re sure they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: They don’t tell nobody. Everything here is confidential unless you want the information given out. And you would have to sign a paper.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But everything here is confidential, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Can I talk to my boyfriend and make sure he doesn’t have any questions or anything?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It is cool if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. My name is Asada (ph).

CALLER: What was it?

CLINIC: Asada.

CALLER: Asada?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.
