CLINIC: Good morning. Canandaigua Planned Parenthood. This is Nicole.
CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not in the Canandaigua office.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know who I should call for that?
CLINIC: Where do you live?
CALLER: I live in Victor.
CLINIC: Okay. What we would need to do is have you come into the office for an initial pregnancy test visit. And during that visit, they can answer all of your questions.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like would they tell my parents or anything?
CLINIC: No. No. We’re very confidential here.
CALLER: Well, it’s just the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all because like my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, and we’re in love. But like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: No. We’re confidential. Anything you tell us remains here.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Do you want to schedule an appointment?
CALLER: Yeah. You guys don’t have an age requirement for that or anything, do you?
CLINIC: A what?
CALLER: An age requirement. Like I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: No, we don’t have an age limit.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want to schedule?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you ever been to Planned Parenthood before?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. Let’s put you in the computer.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What’s your last name?
CALLER: Smith.
CLINIC: S-m-i-t-h?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And what’s your first name?
CALLER: Christine.
CLINIC: C-h-r-i-s-t-i-n-e?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And what’s your date of birth, Christine?
CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.
CLINIC: Okay. Now, it appears that you’ve made an appointment before. You’re in my computer. So why don’t we —
CALLER: When was that?
CLINIC: Yesterday.
CALLER: Yesterday?
CLINIC: Did you call yesterday?
CALLER: Well, yeah — well, I don’t know.
CLINIC: Okay. You wanted to come to the Canandaigua office?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Is that the closest one to you? You’re in Victor, you said?
CALLER: Victor, yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. And what days or what times of day are good for you?
CALLER: Well, Fridays are usually good.
CLINIC: Like tomorrow?
CALLER: Yeah, I guess.
CLINIC: Could you come at 2:30?
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he can get off.
CLINIC: Why don’t you call him and find out when he can bring you. And keep in mind that Mondays and Tuesdays we’re open late, so we could see you as late as 6:30.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So if that’s easier for —
CALLER: Yeah. Monday would probably be better then.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to go ahead and schedule it or do you want to talk to him first?
CALLER: I’ll talk to him.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, Christine, give me a call back. I’m here all day.
CALLER: Okay. And you were Nicole?
CLINIC: Yep.
CALLER: Well, if like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there at all?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?
CLINIC: No. We’re confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Okay. So I’ll call you back when I talk to him.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right. Thank you.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: No? Do you know where I could call?
CLINIC: Sure. Can you hold on just for a minute?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. We refer a lot of people to two doctors – one in Syracuse and one in Binghamton. The first one that’s in Syracuse, it’s 1-800-439-1105. And the other one is Dr. Cousins (sp), which is in Binghamton. And that’s 1-800-676-9011. And you’ll have to call and give them information over the phone.
CALLER: Okay. Do you know like if I have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No? Okay.
CLINIC: Do you have insurance at all?
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for it.
CLINIC: Okay. Because it will go by cash or whatever.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: No, I don’t think that’s an issue at all.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out at all, like because my boyfriend is 22. And we’re going to get married. But like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s an issue (chuckling). He is older. You know, that is a legal issue. That could be. Yeah, if your par —
CALLER: What do you mean?
CLINIC: Well, because you’re considered not an adult, and he’s definitely considered an adult.
CALLER: Yeah? So?
CLINIC: But any of that information — that information will stay there. So that’s not an issue.
CALLER: So nobody will find out or anything?
CLINIC: No. All that information, just like we are, confidential. So even if someone tried to call or get information, they would not give it to them.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But I would definitely give them a call, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys like do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we can.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But they might want to start you on something. So when you’re done with that, you need to call and make an appointment with us.
CALLER: Okay. Like and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?
CLINIC: No. No information. The only thing I tell people, is when you come here and you see people in the waiting room, that’s something we can’t control.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But any other information or anybody calling regarding any of your business, none of that information’s given.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Like if my boyfriend has questions, can I call you back and ask you?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: Amy.
CALLER: Amy?
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: All right. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Okay, thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, well, do you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not at the Clifton Park Center. We would refer you to Schenectady or Glens Falls.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for the Schenectady one?
CLINIC: Are you from Clifton Park?
CALLER: Well, no. I live in Sloansville.
CLINIC: Okay. What you can do is, you can have your visit here and we would send you there. Did you want to make an appointment here to see a counselor?
CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Could I — I’m just worried. Could I ask you a quick question?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: It’s just — well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: We’re a confidential service, so you are able to have services here confidentially. We don’t need to, because of the laws in New York state we do not notify your family.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Regardless of your age. Those are the laws in New York state. You don’t have to notify. We do provide that confidential service.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just that I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so that’s why I’m worried.
CLINIC: Okay. What we’ll need to do is schedule you for a pregnancy test with a counselor, okay?
CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?
CLINIC: We go on a sliding fee scale. Do you have any type of insurance?
CALLER: No. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.
CLINIC: Okay. When you come on in, you’ll talk to the counselor about that and she will asses what category to put you in. There are also —
CALLER: What days do you normally do pregnancy tests?
CLINIC: Usually on a Tuesday, or a Thursday, or a Friday. Let me check. Can you hold on a minute?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?
CALLER: Nuh-uh.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Let’s see. The next appointment would be —
CALLER: Well, do you know if I ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, absolutely.
CALLER: That’s just one thing that we were wanting to do. We just don’t want to have to worry about all this again. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?
CLINIC: No. My goodness, no. (laughs)
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: These are confidential services, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend if — we were just talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. If he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. Nope.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: What days do you have like next week for this, because I would have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work.
CLINIC: Next week, on a Friday I’ve got from 8:00 until noon. 8:00 in the morning, anytime in between there, until noon.
CALLER: Tomorrow or next week?
CLINIC: Next Friday.
CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call him and see if that’s good for him. Could I call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: Yes, I’m Deborah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Speak to either me or Lois.
CALLER: Lois?
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: And we’ll schedule that appointment for you.
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: What’s your first name?
CALLER: It’s Lisa.
CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. We’ll wait to hear from you.
CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: Hi.
CALLER: I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Not at this location. No. We do pregnancy tests. We do the surgical workups. We do everything but the procedure. That is done in Schenectady.
CALLER: In Schenectady?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Do you have that number?
CLINIC: I do. It’s 374-5353.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just scared because like my friend told me that like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22.
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: He’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it?
CLINIC: No. First of all, they’re wrong. There is a complete confidentiality. Nobody has to know. And if I were you, I wouldn’t tell anybody that you’re 14 and your boyfriend’s 22.
CALLER: How come?
CLINIC: Because he could be subject to criminal charges.
CALLER: What do you mean criminal? What would happen?
CLINIC: You’re underage. You’re a minor. And he’s not. He’s — that’s called — it’s called statutory rape.
CALLER: What do you mean? He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love.
CLINIC: No, no. I am saying if somebody like in somebody, an older person, for instance your parents — if your parents were to ever find out, regardless of how consensual it is, they could have him arrested.
CALLER: He could go to jail?
CLINIC: Yeah. Because he is 8 years older than you. He is an adult. He is over the age of — he’s an adult and you are a minor.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Anyone under 17 is a minor.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: And also, you know, so have you missed a period?
CALLER: Yeah. I haven’t had one since like the third week in December, and that’s why I’m scared.
CLINIC: You need to make a phone call and make a decision quickly because there is a 16-week cutoff. After 16 weeks Planned Parenthood will not do the procedure.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And you’re there, because if you haven’t had a period since the third week in December then, you know, you’re there. You’re getting very, very close. And the procedures are booked three weeks in advance.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: You could come in here for a pregnancy test, yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You have any kind of health insurance?
CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything.
CLINIC: Okay, well then he needs to bring about $45. If he’s coming with you for the test —
CALLER: Is that all right?
CLINIC: He needs — yeah. He can. He needs to bring about $45 with him to pay for the test.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just, we were talking about this and like you said we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would they be asking a lot of questions?
CLINIC: Well, that’s why he doesn’t want anyone to know about you because he knows that —
CALLER: He said it was just because he didn’t want me to get in trouble.
CLINIC: Well, yeah. (laughs) Of course he said that. He can come with you. We certainly are not going to file. You know, this is something that only like a family member or any other adult that decides to do that — an auntie, a friend of the family, anybody — just so you know — that’s because of his age and your age. You guys are, you know, just so you know, okay?
CALLER: Alright.
CLINIC: Don’t go blabbing to all your friends. So, yes, come in here today. Come in here.
CALLER: Well, I’d have to call and see if he can get the time off work, but if it turned out that I wasn’t’ pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yeah. But how often have you not had a period for three or four months at a time?
CALLER: Well, not often. I mean, never.
CLINIC: Never. So what are the chances that you’re not pregnant?
CALLER: I don’t know.
CLINIC: They’re pretty low.
CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?
CLINIC: Yeah. Have you ever had an annual exam?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Ever been to a gynecologist?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: (sighs) Yeah. All right. So call him.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Find out when he can bring you in and we’ll try to get an appointment made for a pregnancy test because you really have no time to waste. You really don’t. If this is what you think you’re going to do, then you have to get on the stick immediately; otherwise, you’re going to end up having to go to Long Island for the procedure.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Because 16 weeks is our cutoff, hon. All right? So call him, find out when he can, you know, get you in today, tomorrow sometime. Thursday we’re open until 7:00. But what I’d really need to do is have you come in on Thursday. Let me give you a time. All right? And you tell him and you know, don’t ask him, tell him that he needs to bring you here on Thursday at 1:00.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So that we can get this thing going.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: You’ve been a lot of help. Thank you.
CLINIC: I hope so.
CALLER: What’s your name?
CLINIC: My name is Anna.
CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
CLINIC: Okay? All right. Bye.

CLINIC: Good Afternoon. Or Good Morning, Planned Parenthood. This is Tammy.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We actually don’t. Do you want to come in for a pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, I guess. Well, do you guys have to tell my parents or anything about that?
CLINIC: No, we do not.
CALLER: Because like if my parents find out, they’d be furious. Because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re in love, and we want to get married, but they don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: So there’s just no way that they can find out at all.
CLINIC: Right. I understand that. Basically, in order to give out that kind of information, we would need to have you come in, and you can do a pregnancy test. And what we call that is a pregnancy test with options, and then we can go from there.
CALLER: Okay. When could I come in?
CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. I just have to ask you some questions, and just remind you that this is confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So I need your last name.
CALLER: It’s Smith.
CLINIC: S-m-i-t-h?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. And what’s your first name.
CALLER: Christine.
CLINIC: And is that spelled with “K” or a “C”?
CALLER: “Ch.”
CLINIC: And a phone number, Christine?
CALLER: Well —
CLINIC: This is just — if we need to call you for any reason, we can say Doctor’s Office or Abby.
CALLER: Is it all right if I give you my boyfriend’s cell phone number after I get it from him? Because he just got it, and I don’t know the number yet.
CLINIC: Yeah. Well, why don’t you give me your phone number, and I’ll just put down here don’t call.
CALLER: Well, can I just give you my boyfriend’s telephone number? Can I call you back with that?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. And your date of birth?
CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.
CLINIC: 19th?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And if we need to call you for any reason, what do you want us to say? Usually we say Planned Parenthood, but we can say Doctor’s Office or we can say this is Abby.
CALLER: Like if you’re talking to my boyfriend or whatever, it’s all right. He’s going to take care of everything. So just whatever. I was wondering also, like if I wasn’t pregnant or anything after you guys do the pregnancy test, do you guys do birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?
CLINIC: No, we would not.
CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend came and picked that up?
CLINIC: Actually, once you have your exam and everything, you know, if you’re going to go through with like an AB, go through that, then it’s like three weeks. Then you’d come back and have your exam. And then we go from there and do birth control.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?
CLINIC: No, we would not.
CALLER: Would he have to like fill out any forms?
CLINIC: No, just give us permission that he could pick them up; that’s all.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: I’m looking for a spot to put you in.
CALLER: Well, the main reason why I’m calling is because like I’m just concerned that I’m pregnant because like my last period was the first week in December. So I was just —
CLINIC: Oh, okay. I have — wait a minute, I’ve got to back up here.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. I don’t have anything —
CALLER: I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend. Are those accurate?
CLINIC: Pretty much. But we really require a pregnancy test through — there’s so many different kinds.
CALLER: I’m just so worried about this because like if my parents found out anything, I would be like in the biggest trouble. I don’t even know what they would do.
CLINIC: Right. And I understand that. Can you hold for a moment, Christine?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Thank you.

CLINIC: Christine?
CALLER: Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m at my friend’s house. And her mom came in, so I had to hang up.
CLINIC: It’s okay. I understand. I really do. Tomorrow I can do 6:30.
CALLER: Yeah, yeah. I’d have to call my boyfriend and make sure, but that sounds like it’s all right.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Is it all right if he brings me. And can he come in with me?
CLINIC: After the pregnancy test and after — I’m not — there’s another medical assistant that will doing that with you. And you’re more than welcome to ask her that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: I’m going to schedule you in for 6:30.
CALLER: I meant like, is it all right if he comes tomorrow with me?
CLINIC: Yes. Yes. By all means. Sure.
CALLER: Is it all right if he talks to you guys and asks questions too?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That would be fine. Okay? Now, are you a high school student, college?
CALLER: Well, I’m actually homeschooled. But I’m not actually in high school yet.
CLINIC: Okay. Alright. Okay.
CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back with his cell phone number in a second?
CLINIC: Yes, it is.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay? And I’m here until 5:00 tonight, so there’s no hurry, okay?
CALLER: All right. Okay.
CLINIC: All right. Thank you, Christine.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Judy speaking. How may I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?
CLINIC: In Ithaca they do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?
CLINIC: (to another clinic worker) What’s Ithaca’s telephone number?
CLINIC: It’s 273-1513.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March, she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You wouldn’t have to tell anybody because it’s confidentiality if you go to Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — like I’m just really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14, and I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Mm-hmm.
CALLER: So could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. We could do that. Have you ever been to Planned Parenthood before?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: All right. Let me get you into the computer. Hold on just a second, hon.
CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What’s your last name?
CALLER: Smith.
CLINIC: (typing) First name?
CALLER: Christine.
CLINIC: With a “K” or a “C”?
CALLER: A “C-H.”
CLINIC: Phone number where we could reach you?
CALLER: Well, my boyfriend wanted to use his cell phone number, but he just got it, and I don’t know what it is. Is it all right to call you back with that later?
CLINIC: Oh, sure. Sure.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Your birthday?
CALLER: My birthday is March 19, 1988. Do you know if it’s all right if I use his address?
CLINIC: Oh, yes, as long as — you know it’s somewheres where we could get ahold of you, or whatever.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So let me see when we can get you in.
CALLER: Do you know like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, that if you guys could do birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Well, we would have to set you up for an appointment so you could come in for an exam.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You have to have an exam first in order to get on birth control.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in Thursday, hon?
CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. He’d be the only way I could get there.
CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to set up an appointment? Now do you go to school during the day?
CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.
CLINIC: You’re homeschooled. So do you want to set up the appointment, or you just want to get back to us on that?
CALLER: I guess I’ll just call you back after I talk to him.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Could I ask you real quick, like if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about it, and we didn’t want anybody to really know about all this, so.
CLINIC: No, it’s very confidential here, hon. Whatever you do, you’re the patient, and we abide by what you want as far as contact and everything.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So would it be all right if — like I would really prefer if he was there with me. Would that be okay with everything?
CLINIC: He could come and sit with you and stuff. But as far as when you come in for your exam if you come for birth control, you know, providing this test is negative, there’s a lot of the time that we would just prefer to talk to you because there’s a lot of questions we would want to ask you and it’s a little easier one on one. You know?
CALLER: Oh, okay. But it’s okay if he’s there?
CLINIC: Yeah, as long as he’s here. Yeah, in the waiting room he can wait for you.
