CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyplace that I could call?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hillegrand (ph) or either Metropolitan.

CALLER: Well, I — Metropolitan, I guess.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. That’s up in Englewood.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you can go there and have it done. But they don’t do it here.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Also Barnet (sp) Clinic does it too.

CALLER: Okay. So you do you not have a phone number?

CLINIC: Barnet is 684-6867.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask you a question?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: I don’t know. How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That — I haven’t heard anything about that. You shouldn’t even — I can’t give you yes; I can’t give you no. Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello? Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was talking to someone. But I just wanted to ask some questions.

CLINIC: About?

CALLER: Well like, I was telling her that my friend told me that I have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um, hold on.

CALLER: Ok.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Okay. It depends where you go —

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: — if they require to tell your parents or not.

CALLER: Okay. Like, why?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Why does it matter?

CLINIC: I don’t know. It depends on the rules over the facility you’re going to.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Okay. You know where you can go? You can go to Women’s Health in Barnet Hospital.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they refer you to a doctor from there. Or you can go — you can go to Metropolitan in Hackensack.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I know a doctor, Dr. Ramine Cocazello (ph), that does that too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you’ll have to pay for anesthesiology, and you have to pay for him too.

CALLER: But they wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Because if they found out I was having sex with my boyfriend, they would flip out. They absolutely hate him, because he’s 22. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Yeah, well it depends on the rules of the facility you go to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You want the number for Women’s Health in Barnet?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: 973-977-6867.

CALLER: 973-977-6867?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, you’re sure no one has to know?

CLINIC: Well, you can ask there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That depends on the rule, like I told you. I don’t know how they work.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ends up that I’m not pregnant, do you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do.

CALLER: Yeah. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Not at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Jamie.

CALLER: Jamie?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t do them here. Our main clinic does. Do you want their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s 732-842-9300.

CALLER: 9300?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask you a couple questions?

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: That’s false.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Okay. Because if they found out —

CLINIC: Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Yeah. If they found out I would be in big trouble. They can’t stand my boyfriend.

CLINIC: No. To us it’s like none of their business, you know what I mean? (laughs)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s why you come to us. You know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because minors have rights here. And we don’t inform your parents of anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Well, yeah. All right.

CLINIC: You can call them and — well, where do you live?

CALLER: Well, I live in Middletown.

CLINIC: Okay. Maybe, Spotswood is probably closer for you. Maybe you need to go in for a pregnancy test because you know you’re pregnant already?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and —

CLINIC: It came out positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The only way we can like give you a referral to go somewhere, you have to come into our clinic and get a pregnancy test. We have to confirm it and then we counsel you and give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can call Spotswood. Spotswood is close to you, right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: Yeah, because you live in Middletown, yeah. I think it’s closer to you. You know where Perth Amboy is?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: We’re in Perth Amboy. You know where we are?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, my boyfriend knows.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you just want to make an appointment for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. They don’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: They don’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: No. We won’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: This is your business.

CALLER: Even like — is there an age requirement or anything?

CLINIC: There’s no age requirement.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if like — like I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: It don’t matter.

CALLER: It doesn’t matter?

CLINIC: No, hon.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My friend also told me that you guys have to know that, how old my boyfriend is.

CLINIC: We don’t have to know any information about your boyfriend. Whoever is giving you this information is misinforming you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you did the right thing by calling here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We give you the accurate information. Don’t listen to your friends because they’re giving you misinformation, okay?

CALLER: Well, she said that —

CLINIC: We don’t have to know anything about your boyfriend.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You need to come in as a patient. Come in for a pregnancy test. We’ll — if you are pregnant we’ll confirm it, and then the nurse will counsel you and refer you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Well, like — all right.

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: If like he — he said that we should look into birth control. Like —

CLINIC: Yes, maybe you should.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s definitely a good idea for you. If you’re sexually active you should be on some type of birth control. We supply that here too. So if you come in for pregnancy tests and you’re confirmed and — do you know what you would want to do? You want to abort it?

CALLER: Well, I — yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So after you do that you will come back in two weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I mean? And then you will get a whole GYN exam — pap smear and everything, and then we supply you three months worth of birth control pills. Because you’re a patient here we supply you with that. We put you on a student scale fee which is not that much, and then you just keep coming and receive your pills.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if my boyfriend’s not — like he’s paying for it, and he’s 22. He’s not a student anymore.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We still put you on a sliding scale fee. You know what I mean? So you just give us his info — we give you the paperwork. You put his income down. That’s it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But if it’s easier for you to just keep it as a student fee, and that way he won’t be paying that much.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So even if he’s not a student you just say he is, or what?

CLINIC: No. You don’t say anything about him.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Information, everything on the paper you put about yourself. But in the income bracket you just put his income.

CALLER: And you guys don’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: We don’t tell nobody nothing.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Only thing that’s on your paper, we need a guardian.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You’ll need — not him. Not your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Your mother.

CALLER: But she can’t know.

CLINIC: The only way we will call your mother is if you got hit by a car outside or something, you know what I mean? But she don’t have to know you was here. You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We aren’t going to write letters to your house. We won’t call your house, nothing like that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And if you couldn’t pay your whole balance we wouldn’t even bill you. We’d just run a balance so that the next time you come in to receive more pills, you pay on your balance from before and your current visit. That’s how we do it. You pay as you come or you pay as you can.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So did you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see when he can get off. Is there any way I can call you back?

CLINIC: Okay, because we — actually can’t even put you in until the 22nd. So the longer you wait the longer the appointment is going to be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So. We, actually tonight we close at 5:30, so that’s, if you can try to call before 5:30 so I can put you in for the 22nd.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name so I can —

CLINIC: My name is Wanda.

CALLER: Wanda?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. This is Diane. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anybody I could call?

CLINIC: Is it for yourself?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test from the store over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. What I would encourage you to do is to make an appointment to have an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I can’t discuss that over the phone. I mean, you have your Yellow Pages, but I’d much rather you go to a doctor to have yourself checked out.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We can do that here, and we can give you your choices and information at that time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to make an appointment here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see.

CLINIC: You do that. But we don’t do abortions here, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I got an abortion, would they have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: That’s up to the facility that you go to.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I don’t know.

CALLER: It’s just I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay, there are some states that do require parental consent.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying to you. And I believe that’s Pennsylvania.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But you come in here, talk to you boyfriend and get checked out, and see how far along you are.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. We’re a confidential service here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We encourage you to speak to your parents, but we do not do that, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the reason why I can’t tell my parents is because they don’t like my boyfriend. Like he’s 22, and they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. Do you know his parents at all?

CALLER: Well, he lives on his own.

CLINIC: He lives on his own? Okay. Okay, and this is a mutual relationship that you’re having together?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s not a forced relationship?

CALLER: Well, no. We love each other. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay, okay. Do you have an aunt or somebody that’s close to you that you can confide in with this?

CALLER: No. Like we just moved here.

CLINIC: Okay. Alright. From where?

CALLER: From Texas.

CLINIC: From Texas. Okay. You haven’t left any friends or family back there that you can even talk to?

CALLER: Well, no. I can’t call long distance. I’d get in trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. No siblings in the area, no brothers or sisters?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Talk to your boyfriend. I would strongly encourage you to get an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nope. We would encourage you to speak to your parents, but we don’t do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control?

CLINIC: No. That’s correct.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like if my boyfriend has questions, is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s no problem. We have a doctor here Wednesday evenings and Saturday morning for appointments, okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I like talk to you later?

CLINIC: If you would like to, sure. No problem.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Diane.

CALLER: Diane? All right.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: I cannot give that information until you have a check-up with us. We can give you a referral after a check-up.

CALLER: A check-up? Okay. What would I do for that?

CLINIC: You need to make an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you been here before?

CALLER: Uh-uh.

CLINIC: Okay. The soonest that I can put you in will be Saturday, the 23rd or the 25th, Monday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I have to call my boyfriend and see if he can get off work. But can you answer a question for me?

CLINIC: What?

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t know. Cause he’s —

CLINIC: Don’t worry. They don’t have to know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Because if they found out we were having sex, they would be so mad. They can’t stand him. He’s 22, and they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Don’t worry. If you want a referral, first of all we need a check-up, and we can give a referral. After that, you have to call them up, and ask how much it is, and whatever you want to go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, that’s why you need a check-up here and a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys be able to like give me birth control or anything?

CLINIC: After the termination? Yeah.

CALLER: Oh. Well, like if I wasn’t pregnant.

CLINIC: Oh yeah. If you were not pregnant, yeah.

CALLER: Is there like an age limit for that or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? So it’s okay if I’m like —

CLINIC: If you’re 12.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m going to be 14 in March, so.

CLINIC: That’s okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. Like I said, 10:15 on the 23rd or Monday the 25th at 3:30.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We confirm the pregnancy, and we can give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay. What do you need to do to confirm the pregnancy?

CLINIC: You need an appointment. You come in, pee in a cup. We do some paperwork. You’re on your way.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a couple of questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t perform them here.

CALLER: Okay. But do my parents have to know or anything?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. You would have to ask at where we refer you, at the termination facility.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just they can’t find out at all. Like, if they knew that — like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married. But my parents can’t stand him because they think he’s too old.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March. But if they found out we were having sex, they would be furious.

CLINIC: Actually, that’s considered statutory rape. You’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You need to come in and let us evaluate you.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Here? No. We don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if it turns out that I’m not pregnant after you guys do the test or whatever?

CLINIC: We would suggest you come back, become a patient with us, get you on some birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody about birth control at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: The thing is, you shouldn’t be with somebody who’s 22, not at the age of 14.

CALLER: Well, he loves me. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Let me tell you something. I’ve been there, done that. I had my first child at the age of 14, and I was married before I got pregnant. Okay? But the guy was only three years older than me.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Alright? Twenty-two and 14, he’s taking advantage of you. I don’t care what he tells you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we need to talk to you more. Don’t worry. We cannot talk to your parents without your consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would you have to talk to anybody like at all, like besides my parents or anything?

CLINIC: I want to talk to you.

CALLER: Would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: Not by me.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I call you back?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.
