CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Barbara speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: No? Do you know who I would talk — like call or —

CLINIC: You would have to become a patient here and see the doctor. Then you’d have to make your decision based on, you know, all the options.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You do options counseling. And if that’s what you decide to do, then you’re given names of different places, and you get to choose which one.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they would have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion?

CLINIC: No, never. No.

CALLER: Never?

CLINIC: Never, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s a law. No.

CALLER: Because like there’s just no way they can find out.

CLINIC: That’s right. Not from us. Only through you.

CALLER: Okay. They would be furious if they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex. They think he’s too old for me so. Is there any age requirement or anything to have an abortion?

CLINIC: What is it?

CALLER: Is there any age requirement to have an abortion?

CLINIC: Oh. No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s legal in this state.

CALLER: Okay. So even if like — like I’m going to be 14 in March. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Yeah. You have a choice.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — what if like I wasn’t pregnant or anything?

CLINIC: What if you weren’t?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So then you should get on birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You would still need to see a doctor here and get a full exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You can come in and take a pregnancy test anytime.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can do that without an appointment.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But if you want to go further than that, then you have to see the doctor.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like is it all right if like my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: That’s your choice.

CALLER: Does it cost anything for the —

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: Does it cost anything for the exam or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, it does. But everything’s done on a sliding scale here. And if you’re a student, there’s a special rate. But, yes, there is a charge.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if like — like my boyfriend’s the one that’s going to be paying for it, and he’s not a student. Like, he’s already graduated.

CLINIC: Well, that — no, he’d be paying for you though.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Everything’s based on you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if you had a full exam and everything, it would probably be about $60. But if you just come in for the pregnancy test, it’s about $8 or $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my other question is like, my friend told me that you guys have to know all about my boyfriend before I can get anything done.

CLINIC: There’s nothing we have to know to about him.

CALLER: Like she said that you guys have to know that he’s like 22 and stuff.

CLINIC: That’s none of our concern.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Really.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. This whole thing is based on you, and you alone – your history, your life, your decision.

CALLER: All right. So no one has to be told anything?

CLINIC: No. That’s up to you. And I mean, what he finds out is from you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know, we won’t discuss it with him.

CALLER: You won’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: Okay. Well like, if like after the pregnancy test there, if I’m not pregnant, and I can have birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll discuss that with you. You’ll get counseling here from the nurses.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back after I talk to him?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: To see if he has any questions or anything.

CLINIC: If you can, come in tomorrow, and we’ll do a pregnancy test. And we’ll counsel you then too.

CALLER: Okay. Could I call you back today or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: Well, okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, I’m Barbara. And I’m going to be busy probably with the doctor. We have a clinic.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: So one of the nurses, somebody will pick up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: I can give you Pilgrim’s (sp) phone number if you want to?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s 973-746-1500.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: That’s Pilgrim.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: That’s Pilgrim Medical.

CALLER: Okay. So you can’t answer any questions or anything?

CLINIC: Pertaining to?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, because you’re not coming here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You have to find out with them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So you don’t know?

CLINIC: No. You have to call them. They have their own rules.

CALLER: They have their own rules?

CLINIC: Yes. You have to call them, find out with them. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. If I was to get birth control —

CLINIC: First you have to go there. And after you go there, you make an appointment with us. All right?

CALLER: You guys don’t do birth control there either?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. But you have to go there and first then come here. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Even if like I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Do you need a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I did one like —

CLINIC: I don’t understand your question. If you’re going for a termination, call the number that I gave you.

CALLER: Okay. But what if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Afterwards, if you’re not — didn’t you say you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test —

CLINIC: And?

CALLER: — but I didn’t know if I did it right or anything.

CLINIC: Well, I’m sorry. I won’t be able to help you there. But if you need a pregnancy test, you need to come tomorrow from 1:00 to 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right? Okay.

CALLER: So like if I’m not pregnant, would I be able to go in there?

CLINIC: Listen to what I’m saying. Listen to what I’m saying. Okay? If you need a pregnancy test, come tomorrow from 1:00 to 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let’s do that first. After that, you decide, if you’re pregnant, what you’re going to do; if you’re not, what you’re going to do. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. So if I’m not —

CLINIC: You have to wait for your pregnancy test result. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. But like if I’m not —

CLINIC: Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: What else do you need to know?

CALLER: Well, my problem is I can’t tell my parents about this.

CLINIC: Listen!

CALLER: Yeah? I just need someone to talk to.

CLINIC: Okay. Tomorrow you come from 1:00 to 3:00, and you get a pregnancy test. A person that takes you in will give you all the information you need.

CALLER: Do you have to be like a certain age for that or anything?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Sexually active.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Sexually active. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

CALLER: Like um —

CLINIC: Hold on. I’m going to get you someone else. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yes? May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was just wanting to ask some questions. I’m just needing to talk to someone.

CLINIC: Okay. Ask the questions.

CALLER: Well, I was told that my parents have to know if I want an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah.

CALLER: They do have to know?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Is there any way, because I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you’re calling the wrong place! Do you understand? You have to call the abortion center and find out their rules, because we don’t do abortions, so we don’t know their rules.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant or whatever, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you could, if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. We don’t — For what?

CALLER: Like my friend said that I have to tell you guys like about my boyfriend and everything before I can —

CLINIC: Look, let me tell you. Disregard what your friends say.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All you have to do is come in and get a pregnancy test. If you’re not pregnant, we give you birth control. If you’re pregnant, we send you to the abortion clinic. Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just he’s 22 and —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter how old he is!

CALLER: It doesn’t matter at all?

CLINIC: It matters because you don’t want your parents to find out because they can have him arrested.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yeah. Because you won’t be 14 until March?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: They can have him arrested?

CALLER: Why? What would happen?

CLINIC: Because he is a grown-up; you’re a minor!

CALLER: Well, what could happen to him?

CLINIC: They will put him in jail for statutory rape.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: Nothing!

CALLER: Nothing?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. Because first of all, if you’re 13, you shouldn’t have a 22-year-old boyfriend.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, then your parents must know he’s 22, right?

CALLER: Well, that’s why they don’t like him.

CLINIC: (laughs) Well, I can’t help you with that. You know, that’s up to them, but I’m telling you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to tell anybody. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, if you want a pregnancy test, just come in between 1 and 3 tomorrow, and we will give you one. Okay?

CALLER: Can I call you back?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Maria.

CALLER: Maria?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Ann speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here. But we would give you a referral.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You need to come in and see our doctor.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask a couple of questions first?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, my main question is like, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Do you live in New Jersey?

CALLER: Yeah, I do.

CLINIC: No. Then you don’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just the problem is they can’t tell my parents at all, not at all. Because like my boyfriend is 22. And we’re planning to get married because we really love each other. But my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Well, how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re 13 and he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh. But we’re in love, and we’re going to get married. And he’s going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: Well, I’m going to be honest with you.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You are really under the age of what’s legal for him to be having any kind of relationship with.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? If you’re under the age of 16, it’s considered an illegal act on his part.

CALLER: What would happen to him?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: What? But — what can I do?

CLINIC: Do you have anybody that you can talk to?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you live with your parents?

CALLER: Yeah, but they absolutely hate him. Like they don’t understand anything.

CLINIC: Where do you go to school?

CALLER: I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Why are you home-schooled? Just their choice, or —

CALLER: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

CLINIC: So you have no — do you have any contact with a guidance counselor or anybody at the local school?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Oldwick.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: Oldwick.

CLINIC: Oh, Oldwick.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you have a church that you go to or anyone there?

CALLER: Well, we just moved here. We don’t really have like a normal church that we go to.

CLINIC: Where did you move from?

CALLER: We moved from Texas.

CLINIC: I see. Well, I think you need to come in and talk to somebody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have a friend that could bring you?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend will bring me.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I think you definitely need to come in and talk to someone.

CALLER: Would they tell anybody? Like they wouldn’t tell on us, would they?

CLINIC: Well, they can’t — how long have you known this person?

CALLER: Well, for like a year.

CLINIC: Okay. And he goes to school, or he works?

CALLER: He’s got a job.

CLINIC: He’s got a job. Okay. Well, like I said, you really need to go and talk to someone.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How far along are you? Do you have any idea?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know exactly. I don’t know. Like I took a pregnancy test over the weekend and it said it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, why don’t you just come in and have the pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll start there, and then we’ll figure out what to do from there. Okay? You can walk in anytime for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I mean, they’re only going to — if you don’t give his name, no one will ever know who he is.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like I wouldn’t have to tell anybody, and no one will find out?

CLINIC: Well, not unless you told them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If like, I ended up not being pregnant, would you guys be able to provide like birth control?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back like if my boyfriend has any questions or whatever?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, my name is Ann. But you don’t have to talk — you can talk to whoever is here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of any place —

CLINIC: We don’t give that information over the phone, baby.

CALLER: Oh, you don’t?

CLINIC: No. You have to become a client either our facility or some other facility, and they give you that information in person.

CALLER: How do I become a client?

CLINIC: You become a client by making an appointment for an exam.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask you a question?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Not at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out because my boyfriend’s 22. And they don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: He is too old for you. And because you’re saying your parents don’t like him, doesn’t matter. But it sounds like from the tone of your voice, he is too old for you. We can discuss that when you’re here, that’s if you decide to come here.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know he’s too old for me? I mean —

CLINIC: Because you sound very young, and you said your parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for you. So I’m thinking you’re a teenager and he’s 22. Am I correct?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Baby, he’s way too old for you.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: He’s too old for you. If you’re 13 and he’s 22, you need to be asking yourself what does a 22-year-old man see in a 13-year-old. And he needs to be saying to himself, if I love this young woman, and she’s 13, and I know I can go to jail messing around with a 13-year-old, what’s wrong with me?

CALLER: Do you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we don’t have to tell anybody. We just talk to you about it. And yes, we definitely will talk to you about it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you still want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, yeah. Do you guys like do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody about that or anything?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t. No. So what you do here is between us and you.

CALLER: Okay. And no one would have to know?

CLINIC: No. No one would have to know. We do encourage you to talk to your parents, but we don’t go tell them the information.

CALLER: Okay. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. When you come, you will need money. You’re looking at, at least, $26, at least.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would have to talk to my boyfriend. Can I call you back?

CLINIC: When you call back, you want the front desk to make an appointment. That’s extension 201, okay?

CALLER: Well, can I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. If you want to talk to me, you can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Ms. Jefferson.

CALLER: Ms. Jefferson?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. Rosemary speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know who I should call for that?

CLINIC: Well, you can look in the phone book under clinics and/or abortions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is there any way I could ask you a couple questions?

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Well like, my friend told me that my parents have to find out about it before I can have an abortion.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Is that true?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: They do?

CLINIC: Yep. That’s a law that was passed last year.

CALLER: Is there any way that they wouldn’t have to know? It’s just — my problem is I can’t tell my parents, because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning to get married, but my parents can’t stand him because he’s —

CLINIC: Where do you live, hon?

CALLER: I live in Andover.

CLINIC: Mm-hmm. What you would do with us is you can become a patient here.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: And you have to come in and have a complete examination, including a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then we would refer you out.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Would you want to do that?

CALLER: Well, would anybody have to know?

CLINIC: I don’t believe so. But you know what you can do? Give us a call in about an hour, then one of the nurses could talk to you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if like —

CLINIC: How about 8:00?

CALLER: Eight o’clock tonight?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: No, this is just to call and talk.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’m like at my friend’s house now. At 8:00 her parents will be here.

CLINIC: All right. How about in half an hour?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: I’ll have a nurse available in half an hour.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. It’s just my friend said that you guys have to just know everything. And I just don’t want my parents to find out at all.

CLINIC: If you become a patient of ours.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, do you have to be a certain age to be a patient?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Cause I’m going to be 14 in March, so.

CLINIC: Mm-hmm. Where are you going to come up with this money?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend will pay for it.

CLINIC: Okay. Alright, because our fee here is going to run around, oh, let’s say about $25-$30. And then it’s about between $200 and $300 for a termination.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nuh-uh.

CALLER: No? Okay. Well, if it ended up where the pregnancy test was negative or whatever —

CLINIC: Mm-hmm. Are you late for your period?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: How late?

CALLER: I don’t really know. I think —

CLINIC: When were you due?

CALLER: Well, like maybe around the first week or so of this month.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re not too, too late. So you’ve got time. What do you want to do? Do you want to set up an appointment, and this way you can talk to the counselor. And the nurse can give you all your options? Why don’t you do this? This is going to be easier for you. Why don’t you do this?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just come in. Come in tomorrow. Can you have your boyfriend bring you tomorrow?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to talk to him and see if he can get off work.

CLINIC: No, no. Just to come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, he’d have to drive me, and he’d have to be off to be able to take me.

CLINIC: All right. Do you know what day he can take off?

CALLER: I guess — I think Friday.

CLINIC: Friday he can take off? Because you could come in Friday anytime between, say 9:30 and 4:00. You can have the pregnancy test done, because you would need to have one to become our patient. And then you can sit and talk with the nurse, and she can give you all the legalities. And she can give you all the information on which way you want to go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But she wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you’ll talk to her about that. Well, she’s not going to — if somebody walks in here — this is total confidentiality.

CALLER: Total?

CLINIC: Total.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Somebody could walk in here and say, “I’m Mary Smith’s mother. I want to know if she was here.” And we could not give out any information that you were even here.

CALLER: They wouldn’t have to tell about, like —

CLINIC: That you’re going to have to talk to the nurse about.

CALLER: Okay. Like —

CLINIC: So why don’t you come in Friday. Have him bring you in Friday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And it’s only going to take five or ten minutes for the test, and then you’ll talk with the nurse.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t tell anyone about my boyfriend then?

CLINIC: No. No. Absolutely not.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No, we can’t.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We can’t. We can’t. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So don’t worry about that.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? So come in Friday between 9:30 but before 4:00.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: All right. We’ll see you Friday.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
