CLINIC: This is Eileen. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if I could ask some questions about getting an abortion?

CLINIC: Certainly. For yourself?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — I’m just really scared. I don’t know. But my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March and she said that my parents would have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: No. The law says parent or legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. In Missouri.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: What do you think would happen if you told your parents?

CALLER: I don’t know. They would — they don’t — if they found out I was having sex they would — I don’t know what would happen. They would be furious.

CLINIC: Really? And then they’d get over it, or —

CALLER: I don’t know. I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: You can go to Illinois. There’s a clinic in Granite City, and Illinois at this point doesn’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can your boyfriend — if he’s 22, then he can get you over there, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You both want to do this?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re both in agreement on this?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: All right. Let me give you their number. You got a pen ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s an 800 number so it won’t cost you to call there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Wait, I’m looking for it. Hold on. Where are my phone numbers?

CALLER: I’m just really scared because like — well I don’t know if I am pregnant really. But like I’ve missed my period. Like the last time I had my period was like December 14. I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Well, you need to go to the drugstore and get yourself a pregnancy test. They’re about $10 or so.

CALLER: Are they accurate though?

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very accurate.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Is there a phone number list? I can’t seem to find it. Yeah, they’re very accurate. Oh, here it is. I got it. Never mind. Hope Clinic, 1-800-844-3130.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test? I would just rather have someone else do it.

CLINIC: Let me connect you to the health center. They have a free teen clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I just was wanting to ask some —

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Eureka.

CLINIC: Eureka. South? Is that south or north?

CALLER: It’s south.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, there’s a Planned Parenthood on South Grand.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And there’s one on —

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: She said that it would be better to go to you for some reason. I don’t know. But —

CLINIC: We’ll be glad to run a pregnancy test. That’s $10. If you just want to do that. December 13 makes you about — you sure you had a good period in December?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. That makes you now about 10, almost 11 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And so you’re still in your first trimester. But you know, pregnancy is divided into three parts.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re still in the first part, but you’re getting closer to the second part of your pregnancy when the price gets more.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So —

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know, so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, then let him go get you a pregnancy test at Walgreen’s. And you can run it yourself, and if it comes out positive you call Hope Clinic. And I’d get in there as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If it was negative, could I come in and get like birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Then you call the health center, absolutely. Then you call the same number and you do extension 549.

CALLER: 549?

CLINIC: Yeah, but I don’t know what’s closer to you. If you’re in Ballwin?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: Oh, so you’d rather come down here?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. If it’s negative then you make an appointment for birth control. Ask them for the free teen clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: See, if you go get your own pregnancy test then it’s quicker and then you can get into Hope Clinic quicker.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to be sure you’re pregnant. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if anybody has to know about me and my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Not in Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Here your mother would have to know.

CALLER: She would have to know if I got like birth control there?

CLINIC: No. No. Nobody has to know about birth control. You don’t need parental consent to get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody has to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: He’s just worried.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. He’s a little old for you though, isn’t he?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know.

CLINIC: You’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah. But why do you say that?

CLINIC: He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, well, that’s kind of a big difference when you’re 13. That’s what I was thinking.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Does he know? I mean, are you going to use birth control after this now?

CALLER: Well, yeah. We don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right. Right. Well, does your mom know him?

CALLER: Well, she doesn’t know we’re having sex. I mean, she knows him.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: He used to work with my dad. But —

CLINIC: I see. Well, you’ve got to really take care of yourself, hon. You get yourself — really. Let him go to Walgreen’s and buy it for you or you — you know, or you can go buy it, and then run it, and then you get yourself to Hope Clinic. And then you go — I guess they’ll get you started on some pills or something, whatever you think you want, because you could take something right after the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you think if I was on — like if I got birth control that he could pick them up because I can’t drive. I don’t have any way to get there.

CLINIC: If it’s negative, you mean?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: He’d have to bring you over.

CALLER: Well, like could he pick up the like birth control pills or whatever?

CLINIC: No, because you’ve got to sign for them.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: He would have to bring you here to pick them up.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But nobody would have to know anything?

CLINIC: Not with birth control. You don’t have to tell the parents for birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And your name was Eileen?

CLINIC: Eileen, uh-huh.

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood (unclear). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic. I can give you the number that does. The number is 531-7526.

CALLER: Okay. Where is that exactly?

CLINIC: It’s off of Forest Park and Bowles (sp), a Planned Parenthood, but we just don’t do it at this vicinity.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like — well I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: Yeah. He’s old enough.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yes, you can. It’s on a walk-in basis and the cost is $10 unless you have Medicaid. If you have Medicaid it’s free.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would really rather my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. You make an appointment to become a patient.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It ranges — well, you’re 14, so you’d probably get put on federal funding.

CALLER: Oh. Well –

CLINIC: Because you’re in school and you don’t work.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell anybody about me then?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what was your name? Is it all right if I call back if I had any questions?

CLINIC: Sure. Sara.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: They do down at the Center West End (ph) office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me give you that number– 314-531-7526. Then you want to talk to the Reproductive Health Center.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I ask you a couple quick questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Like my last period was like December 14th, and I’m just scared, so. I don’t know –

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: That’s what you need to do first.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. They’re $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to be like a specific age? My friend told me that since like — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents that like I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and nobody would have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: That’s a question for Reproductive Health Services. I do think that you have to have parental consent at your age at Reproductive Health Services. Now, I do think there is a clinic in Alton called the Hope Clinic for Women. I do not think you have to have parental consent there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you first need to make sure you’re pregnant, get a pregnancy test first of all.

CALLER: I really want my boyfriend to be there. Is that okay if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: When we do the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You can come in anytime today up until 5:30, or tomorrow you can come in anytime up until 3:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend said that you guys would have to tell on my boyfriend if he came in.

CLINIC: Would have to what?

CALLER: Would have to tell on my boyfriend if he came in. Like would he get in trouble if he was there with me?

(pause)

CLINIC: He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You know what? I would not bring him in.

CALLER: Just don’t bring him at all?

CLINIC: That’s right.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Forget that you told me that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant like after you guys do the pregnancy test, could you do birth control?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, how soon would I be able to get that?

CLINIC: Well, the next available appointment. And I think that’s probably about a week or maybe two weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would anybody have to know?

CLINIC: No. We do give birth control without parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Absolutely we do.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions that I didn’t think of just now, could I call you and talk to you?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. But are you going to come in today for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend and see when he can take me because I don’t know how else to get there.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: Could I call and talk to you? You’re just nice. What was your name?

CLINIC: Yeah, Kathy. You can call.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Warrensburg Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh, well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Comprehensive Health in Overland Park, Kansas does them. And the Planned Parenthood in Columbia.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the one in, the first one you said? Do you have the phone number?

CLINIC: 1-800-227-1918.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March and she said that —

CLINIC: You’re what?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And she said that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just —

CLINIC: That doesn’t make any difference.

CALLER: — sign everything?

CLINIC: No. It has to be parents. You have to — is Kansas parents’ notification or parents consent?

CLINIC (In The Background): Under 18 there has to be a guardian.

CLINIC: There has to be a guardian there that the court has appointed —

CLINIC (In The Background): A parent or a parent for a legal guardian. If they don’t want to tell their parents they can get a judicial bypass and (unclear) would have to tell them how to do that. They have a judge and everything.

CLINIC: But you can call that number I just gave you and tell them and they can get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: It’s a legal thing that says you can get it without your parents knowing it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would there be — do I need a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: No. You have to call up there.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Have you already done one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, how do you know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since like December 14, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Are your periods normal?

CALLER: Usually.

CLINIC: Every month?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Pregnancy tests are $18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right — like I would want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: All it is is a urine test.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know? We don’t — that’s all we could —

CALLER: But he could bring me in?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just — we were talking about it, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to have him sign anything or anything?

CLINIC: No, but you’re going to fill out paperwork.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents that I was there?

CLINIC: No, but someone might see you out here that knows you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know, that we don’t have any control over.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant –

CLINIC: Well, you could go to Walmart and get you a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh. Well, either way, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get a birth control? Could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if the pregnancy tests like at Walmart are usually accurate?

CLINIC: They are if you follow the directions.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Certainly. Julie.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
