CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. This is Julie. Can I help you?
CALLER: Yeah. Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we do not. But I can give you referral places if you’d like to call them.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. You may want to give them a call. I’m thinking Columbia does it. The number in Columbia Clinic is 573-443-0427. And then I can give you a couple others that are a little further off. There’s one is St. Louis, which is 1-800-419-0301. And there’s one in Overland Park, Kansas, 1-800-227-1918.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And Granite City, Illinois, which is just outside of St. Louis. It’s 1-800-844-3130. Try the Columbia Clinic first though because I think they may do them now.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: I’m just really scared about all this. Cause like, well my last period was like December 14th, and I’m usually pretty regular, and I’m just scared. My friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about anything?
CLINIC: You know what I would do? I would call these clinics and ask them, because we don’t deal with that; they do.
CALLER: Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for that then?
CLINIC: Yeah. Can you hold on a minute?
CALLER: Yeah.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. Thank you for holding. What was your question again?
CALLER: I was wondering if like you guys did the pregnancy test there?
CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests. Yes, we do.
CALLER: I really wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. But is that all right?
CLINIC: Yes, he can come.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The only thing I’m going to say is we are booked today with more or less appointments. If you’d want to come in tomorrow, it might work a little better for us, if you could wait until tomorrow for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: What time tomorrow?
CLINIC: Anytime you want to come in is fine. Anytime during the day. I’ll be here from 9 in the morning until about 5:00 that night. And then as for the question about — you had another question. I would call those clinics and ask them.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: You can, but you’d have to see the nurse practitioner, and you’d have to make an appointment for that. She’s only here Monday and Thursday, but we could make an appointment if you’d like when you come in for that.
CALLER: Well, is there any problem with my boyfriend picking up the birth control? Because I can’t drive.
CLINIC: Well, we can’t give that to you until the nurse practitioner sees you and you actually have what we call an initial visit with her.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like after that?
CLINIC: If you give the okay for him to do it, and you sign a piece of paper, he can pick up the pills for you, yes.
CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there or getting birth control or anything?
CLINIC: Right, uh-huh. But what I would do is I would call if you have questions regarding that concerning — the facilities that I just gave you, I would call them and ask them if they are confidential also.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: Right, uh-huh.
CALLER: Okay. He’s just really worried about people saying a whole bunch of stuff, so.
CLINIC: No, that’s confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. Gina.
CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anyplace that might?
CLINIC: Um-hmm. Our closest is Columbia.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you want the number?
CALLER: Yes, please.
CLINIC: 573-875-4177. Do you want the St. Louis number also?
CALLER: Yeah, I guess.
CLINIC: Okay. 1-800-419-0301.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just really scared cause like my friend told me that — Like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents have to be told that I’m getting an abortion. But I can’t tell them at all. Like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of everything —
CLINIC: Not if you’re a minor I don’t think.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: I don’t think so, but call the clinic and find out for sure.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: I don’t really know. But like I’m scared because like my last period was like December 14th, so.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you taken a test yet?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: That’s probably your next step.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that then?
CLINIC: Um-hmm. We’ll be here all day tomorrow 8 to 5. We’ll be here Saturday.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We can do that for you.
CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know. Would you have to tell anybody I was getting a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: You have to do papers, and you have to be in our computer, but it’s all confidential.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But nobody would have to anything about him?
CLINIC: Uh-uh.
CALLER: Oh, okay. I just really wanted to have him there with me. Is that okay?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if like the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No. It’s all confidential.
CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay like if my boyfriend picks it up? Because I don’t drive. I wouldn’t have any way to pick it up.
CLINIC: The birth control?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we’ll cross that when we get there. Let’s get the pregnancy test done first, because you’re going to have to come back for an exam.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If it’s negative, we’ll make you an appointment for an exam. And if you get on pills, we can have him sign a thing.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So just come and get them or after the exam?
CLINIC: Right. Yeah, when you get all that — you need to become a patient first. So we need to do all that first.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: And was your name Tina?
CLINIC: Gina.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is April. Can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. But I can give you referrals for places that do.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Hold on just a second, okay?
CALLER: Okay.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. The first one is in Overland Park, Kansas. And their number is 1-800-227-1918. And there’s one in St. Louis, Missouri. Their number is 1-314-531-7526. And then there’s one here in Springfield. Okay? And it is 831-7298.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that, and nobody would have to know?
CLINIC: I have no idea. I mean, you would have to call the abortion clinic itself. Okay?
CALLER: It’s just I’m scared. And my parents can’t find out at all because they hate my boyfriend. They think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: Okay. You know, I don’t know. I know in the state of Missouri if you’re under the age of 18, you have to have a parent’s consent. So I’m not really sure. Now, I can give you this other place. It’s in Illinois. It’s Granite City, Illinois. It’s right outside St. Louis. And their number is 1-800-844-3130. And they might do it without a parent’s consent.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test? It’s just I haven’t had one yet, but I’m scared so. Like my last period was like December 14th, so.
CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, the pregnancy tests are $22 cash or credit card, and you can come anytime before 6:00.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s in there with me?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Cause he would pay for everything.
CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask a lot of questions, and he doesn’t want anybody to know about it so.
CLINIC: Okay. That’s fine. Everything is totally confidentiality here.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? You know, we can’t give out any kind of information about you or what we have talked to you about or anything.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just that my parents can’t find out at all about anything. They just really hate him.
CLINIC: No. I mean, really they can’t get any kind of information from us whatsoever.
CALLER: Okay. I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, I mean you can come in and do the test. Like I said, they’re $22, anytime before 6:00 tonight.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you think that there’s any way that I couldn’t be pregnant?
CLINIC: You know, there could be a possibility. You know, we can talk to you whenever you come in for the test if you’d like. Okay?
CALLER: Well, if like I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: You sure could.
CALLER: Would he be able to pick it up? Because I don’t have any way to drive there.
CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah.
CALLER: Yeah?
CLINIC: Yeah.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about anything, right?
CLINIC: No, not at all.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Alright. So you wouldn’t say anything to anybody?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Springfield Health Care Center. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?
CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.
CALLER: How do you know how far along you are?
CLINIC: Well, do you know when your last period was?
CALLER: January 15th.
CLINIC: And was it a normal period for you?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. If I go by — We have a little wheel that they use in the gynecologist office and everything. It kind of helps determine that. If I put it as your last period on the 15th of January, that puts you approximately — let’s see today’s the 12th — right at the beginning of nine weeks from your last period.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? Anything under 12 weeks, it’s 575.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What that includes is your lab work and ultra sound, medication before the procedure, the actual procedure, your follow-up exam, two months of birth control. What is not included is if you’re a negative blood type.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Do you know what blood type you are?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: If you’re a negative blood type, it would be $60 more for the Rhogam shot that you have to have. And the only other fee would be your medications afterwards, which should just be one, which would be your antibiotic, which generally runs about $9 if you don’t have insurance.
CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m kind of worried. My boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. But I’m worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. We still have to have one parent to consent. They have to be here to sign the paperwork and everything. Do they know about your boyfriend?
CALLER: Yeah, they know we’re going out, but they have no idea we’re having sex. I can’t tell them that at all. I mean, they’d be furious if they found out about that.
CLINIC: Well, probably to start off, they would be. But eventually they’re going to have to realize that you were responsible enough to let them know.
CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all.
CLINIC: You know, you’re going to have to. The thing is, is that I know that’s going to be extremely difficult. But sooner or later they’re going to find out anyway.
CALLER: How?
CLINIC: Because you’re going to get further and further along.
CALLER: Well, is there anyplace else I could go and they wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?
CLINIC: Not to my knowledge.
CALLER: So there’s nothing I can do then?
CLINIC: Not that I know of. I’m trying to think. Are you absolutely positive that was a normal period?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Because sometimes you can have normal periods and still be pregnant. And that’s really the only thing that bothers me, is you might be further along than we think.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Which gives you less time to find somewhere else to go, or you know, to come here, tell your parents, you know whatever.
CALLER: Well, would I be able to come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Do you guys live in town, in Springfield?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. That might be the easiest thing. Because we don’t have to have parental consent to do like an ultra sound or pregnancy test.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So we can at least do that. In the meantime, I can try to figure out if there’s anyplace that you can go.
CALLER: Okay. But no one would have to know about the pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know about the pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about all this. But he said he would pay for everything. Would he have to fill out any forms or have his name on anything if he was paying?
CLINIC: No. If you want to do just the pregnancy test, it’s $5. If you want to do an ultra sound — because that’s really the only way we can actually tell for sure how far along you are — the ultra sound is $100.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So that would be better then?
CLINIC: I would think so, just to be on the safe side. Because if for some reason you’re 16 weeks, you know, that’s going to put you in a time crunch.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You know, where you have to do something fairly quickly, at least for the state of Missouri.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: We could get you started, and then you could go to Planned Parenthood because they do not need parental consent to give you birth control.
CALLER: Well, do you guys need parental consent for birth control?
CLINIC: No. But we don’t have a doctor that can actually — they’re going to have to have a doctor talk to you and everything. We can get you started on it. But to continue on it, you need to see their nurse practitioner or their doctor. But they don’t need parental consent for that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: But are you sure no one would have to know about me and my boyfriend for the pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No, not at all.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name’s Tammy.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And yeah, you’re more than welcome to call.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Okay. And you can talk to myself or Michele.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
