CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Moorhead. This is Carolyn.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: Red River Clinic in Fargo.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Yeah, just a minute.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Is this a local call?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 298-9999.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that like since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: No. You have to do your own stuff. But I don’t think your parents have to sign anything. But you’ll have to go to — or they’ll get a court order for you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what —

CLINIC: That’s all confidential. Just call them. They’ll tell you what has to happen.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much it cost to get a court order?

CLINIC: (Sigh) Just call them and they know. We don’t do anything of that. They know, so ask them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Darlene.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. You have to go to the cities.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you have a number for any of them?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Let me see here. You’ve got a pen and paper?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 877-890-6225.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I ask you a couple of questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me that — Like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys have to tell my parents. But is there any way — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: Actually, there’s ways around that.

CALLER: Like what?

CLINIC: Call the Cities. I don’t know the details of it. Call that number — and that is a toll free number — and they will answer any questions you have.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in to where you’re at and get a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period — Oh, can I put you on hold for a minute?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

RECORDING: Looking for information on reproductive health? Let the Planned Parenthood Resource Center help you with —

CLINIC: Okay. The first day of your last period was when?

CALLER: I think it was like around December 14th.

CLINIC: And have you taken one at home?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can come in anytime and we can do a test for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if my boyfriend brings me? Because I don’t know any other way to —

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Okay. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. So I guess I’ll —

CLINIC: Well, do you want to come in for an appointment on Thursday?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. But what time is it that you guys normally do that?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, let me pull up that schedule so you can at least take a couple of days and times down, so you can check with him and his schedule.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: On Thursday the 21st we would have time from 9 until 2:00. And then next week we would have Monday. Monday we have times from 9 until 3:30. And next Tuesday, 9 until 5:30. And those are every half an hour.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So go ahead and just call him and see what — you can talk to him in a couple days and see what his schedule looks like, then you can just get back to us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: He doesn’t want anyone asking a whole bunch of questions. You guys wouldn’t do that, would you?

CLINIC: Like about what?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He’s just worried about my parents finding out and getting in trouble.

CLINIC: No. That’s not an issue.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure that nobody would find out anything?

CLINIC: Yep, that’s right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Patty.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. The only place that they’re done through us is in the cities.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: At the clinics there.

CALLER: Do you have the number for that, or?

CLINIC: Yeah. Hang on just a second.

(pause)

CLINIC (New Person): Hey there.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Looking for a phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, this is for the Highland Clinic, and this is an 800 number for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 877-890-6225.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure, go ahead.

CALLER: Well, my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: No. The only thing they can do is what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You have to go to court and tell them the reason why you don’t want your parents to know.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a fee for THAT.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: But you know what? When you call up and make an appointment up there, they’ll be able to tell you. Ask them about that up there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if the judge ever says no or anything?

CLINIC: I’m not really for sure. I think different counties are different.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Like some are more strict and some are not, so I think your best bet would probably be to a court up in the city someplace rather than here in Redwing.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I think they would know more about that up at Highland as far as, you know, a good place for you to go and that kind of stuff.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just my friend told me to go to you guys, so.

CLINIC: Okay. And that is a Planned Parenthood up there, the number that I gave you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But do you guys do like pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell my parents or anybody at all about that?

CLINIC: No, not about that.

CALLER: Okay. Because like — But you wouldn’t — Is it all right if like my boyfriend brings me because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Yep, that’s fine.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, like say that I wasn’t pregnant, like the pregnancy tests came out negative — do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do, and you would just have to make an appointment for an exam and we can provide birth control for you.

CALLER: Well, you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control either?

CLINIC: No. It’s strictly confidential, only between us here at the clinic and you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you wanted to come in for a pregnancy test, we’re open until 7:00 today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

TAPE – 310

(Dialing, phone ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Rochester Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not in this clinic. We do have some clinics in the city that do.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Sure. Hang on one second.

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: Our nurse practitioners and doctors work with you helping to find the method that fits best with your lifestyle and personal —

CLINIC: Okay. You’re ready?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: All right. There’s a Planned Parenthood. It’s called the Highland Clinic, St. Paul. The toll free number is 1-877-890-6225. There’s also the Midwest Health Center in Minneapolis. That’s 612-332-2311. There’s also a Dr. Mildred Hanson in Minneapolis, 612-870-1334. And there’s Surgical Specialties at the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. They have a toll free number. It’s 1-800-332-5720, extension 3200.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if you guys — well, my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to have my parents sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever that is?

CLINIC: No. But there is something called the judicial bypass that you can get. You don’t have to have your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Well, he’s an adult. Why can’t he sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: Because he’s not really your guardian.

CALLER: Oh, okay. How much does it cost for a judicial bypass?

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a cost for that, but the abortion itself is like $450.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You have to have that available.

CALLER: Well, he said he was going to take care of everything so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, if you call those phone numbers and tell them that you are in need of that, and they can give you all the information about what you need to do and where you need to call.

CALLER: Okay. And you don’t think that they would have to say anything to my parents or anybody? We just can’t let anyone know for any reason.

CLINIC: Nope. You’re protected by law that you do not have to do that as long as you can get the judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if I can’t get that? Is there any reason why they wouldn’t let me have that?

CLINIC: Generally not. Usually that’s not a problem.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I don’t know of anybody that’s tried to get that and has not been able to. So that’s usually not a problem. Just make sure you ask about that information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like I’m just really worried because like my last period was like the second week in December. Is there any way that I couldn’t be pregnant?

CLINIC: Have you done a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. You probably need to do a pregnancy test to make certain. I mean, you know, it’s possible sometimes you can actually skip periods for whatever reason.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. You don’t need an appointment, you can just walk in.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yep, that’s fine.

CALLER: So like if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: We wouldn’t be able to give it to you that day. We could set up an appointment for you to come back for a complete physical exam and a pap smear, and we could get you going that way.

CALLER: Okay. Because my boyfriend doesn’t want to have to go through this again so.

CLINIC: Well, yeah. That would probably be good. (laughs)

CALLER: Well, like if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Would it be possible like for him to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No. You’re going to have to come in for an actual exam, and we give them to you that day. We give them to you that day when you come in for the exam.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like after the exam or whatever? Because I don’t drive. He’s the only one that could —

CLINIC: You have to come back one more time to do a blood pressure check and a weight check because we have to make sure you’re doing okay on the pills.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And then after that we give you the whole year, so the next time you come back is for the exam. And then we can give you all the pills anyway.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: There really isn’t a time that we need to have him come back, and we really have to have you come in to get them because they’re for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if he had any questions, what was your name? Could I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Lisa. You can ask for any of the nurses. Any of us can help you with it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You bet. Bye bye.

TAPE – 304

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: St. Cloud Planned Parenthood. Amy speaking. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Not in St. Cloud. The only places that do them are in the Twin Cities, Duluth or Fargo. I can give you a phone number if you want me to do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can I put you on hold for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thanks.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. Sorry about that. You know, the only number I have right off hand is for the Planned Parenthood in St. Paul. Their toll free number is 1-877-890-6225.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Can I ask a couple questions real quick?

CLINIC: You know what? I’m really not going to know anything about it just because we don’t do them here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: They’d be able to answer all your questions better than I would.

CALLER: Well, do you know if my parents have to know or anything? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That I don’t know. I know that there is a law that says that they have to be notified. But I think there’s some kind of a judicial bypass that that’s absolutely impossible. And like I said, they’re the ones that deal with it all the time, so they would be able to help you with that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can do that. We do those on a walk-in basis, if you just come in anytime. It’s a urine pregnancy test so it takes about five minutes to run. But you should plan to be here about 20 minutes with paperwork and talking to the nurse and all that stuff. So if you wanted to come in, you could come in tomorrow between 9 and 4, Thursday between 9 and 6, or Friday between 9 and 3.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could my boyfriend sign for me? He’s 22.

CLINIC: What do you mean sign for you? You don’t need to have your parents’ permission to have a pregnancy test done.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You can just come in here on your own and do that.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend came with me?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: He’s worried that you guys would have to say something to him or ask him questions and stuff.

CLINIC: We wouldn’t do anything with him. It’s completely confidential. So you can come in on your own or you can bring him in if you want to. Basically, we’re just going to run the test and tell you what the result is, and refer you from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: We sure do, yes. If it turns out negative, what we can do is schedule you to come in for — well, to get on birth control, you would have to come in for a pap smear and a pelvic exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Everything that we do here is confidential.

CALLER: So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: Not about birth control, no. You would be able to just come in, have the exam, and we could get you started on a birth control method, you know, once you decide which one that you want to go on. And we can give you all that information when you come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.
