CLINIC: The women there should know though.

CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that at all?
CLINIC: No. That would be entirely confidential.

CLINIC: We’re open today until 6:30.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. You can just walk in for that if that’s what you need.
CALLER: Okay. I would just have to call my boyfriend to see if he could bring me, but would you guys have to say anything about him at all?
CLINIC: Say anything to him?
CALLER: Or just about him? Because my friend said that you guys have to say something about him because he’s 22.
CLINIC: Oh, you’re talking about like mandatory reporting or like statutory rape stuff?
CALLER: Yeah, I guess. What do you mean?
CLINIC: I don’t know, and I’m not real sure what your question is.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: We don’t really care who your boyfriend is as long as you’re in a consensual relationship.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: If you tell us about abuse, yes, we have to report it.
CALLER: Oh, well, we’re — no. Like we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Okay. And that’s perfectly fine. You need to just come up and take care of your services, and everything’s confidential.
CALLER: Okay. So like if I got on birth control there you guys wouldn’t tell anybody either?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. They do them in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and at St. Paul.
CALLER: Okay. Well do you have the number for the St. Paul?
CLINIC: I sure do. I just have to find it. It’s 877-890-6225.
CALLER: Okay. I’ll be 14 in March. And my friend told me that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he do that?
CLINIC: Ask them when you call. It’s an 800 number. But usually they make you go in front of a judge if you don’t have your parents’ approval or signature, the last I knew. Okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there like for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yes. So you’re not sure if you’re pregnant?
CALLER: Well, not really. Like I’m just scared. Because like my last period was like the second week in December.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there or anything?

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me?
CLINIC: Sure, that’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried that you guys would ask questions about him. You guys wouldn’t?
CLINIC: No, no, no. Nope, nobody will know but us here.
CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?
CLINIC: We sure do.
CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: Nope, uh-uh. It’s all confidential. We’ll real strong about the confidentiality. That’s very important. Yeah, we can do the pregnancy test today. But if it’s negative, you’d have to come back either a Monday or Thursday to see our nurse practitioner.
CALLER: I would have to call and see when my boyfriend can get off work, but that’s cool.
CLINIC: Yeah. So you just have to schedule a time, you know, that you think he could bring you in. But you can come in anytime for the pregnancy test.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my parents can’t find out because they don’t like him. I mean, he’s a really nice guy. They just don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.
CLINIC: Yeah, well. Us parents are funny people. Yeah, no. It’s totally confidential here, hon.

CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t — it’s just he doesn’t want anyone to know, but you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: It would depend on if it’s an abusive relationship or not. I guess we’d need to find that out from you.

I looked up in my Consent and Confidentiality Handbook, and it says, “If an adolescent reveals having consensual sex with someone considerably older than he or she, is the healthcare provider mandated to report this as statutory rape?” And according to Minnesota state law, it says no. “Even though the sexual conduct between a minor and an older individual may constitute criminal sexual conduct, healthcare providers are not mandated to report unless the sexual contact also falls within the child abuse/sexual abuse reporting.” So unless it’s child abuse or sexual abuse, then we don’t need to tell anybody. All right?

CLINIC: There is. It would be a judicial override, where you would have to go before a judge and explain to them why telling your parents that you need this procedure would endanger your health and welfare.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And then he would have to agree or — the judge would have to agree that, yes, that would be a danger to you.
CALLER: Does he never not agree?
CLINIC: They can, yes.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does all of that cost?
CLINIC: When you call up, tell them that that’s something you need information about. And they’ll know more about that process and how to initiate that for you.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there and get like a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Yeah. We can do that, yes.
CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No.

CLINIC: Pregnancy tests and birth control and all that stuff, that’s for you to consent for.

CLINIC: Just in Minnesota your parents have to consent for an abortion. Well, not actually through a consent; they just have to be notified.
