CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Albert Lea. This is Carol. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. The only facilities that provide that service in the Planned Parenthood system here in Minnesota would be in St. Paul.

CALLER: Oh. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Yes. I can give that to you. It’s a toll free number. It is 1-877-890-6225.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it okay if I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: My friend told me — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to my parents sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign that?

CLINIC: Not unless he’s your legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh, well no. So is there any way that my parents don’t have to find out?

CLINIC: There is what they call a judicial bypass. And that they use sometimes where they get a judge to sign it like if they can’t locate your parents or something like that. But you can ask them more questions when you call that toll free number, because they may know some other information that would apply.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I get a pregnancy test at where you’re at?

CLINIC: Do you not know whether or not you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, not really. It’s just I’m scare because like my last period was like the second week in December, and I just don’t know.

CLINIC: And you haven’t used any method of birth control or anything?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you better come in and get a test. The nurse will be here this afternoon until 6:30. It is a urine pregnancy test, so you will need to give us a urine specimen when you come in.

CALLER: Oh, okay. You guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, that’s strictly confidential. The only thing that requires your parents to know is if you’re having something that requires more significant medical treatment, but not birth control services or testing for sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Is it okay if like my boyfriend brings me and is there with me?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he just doesn’t want anybody in there to know about him. So you guys wouldn’t tell anybody about him or anything?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody about the patients that come to visit us or the people that they’re associated with.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: I’m in Glenwood.

CLINIC: Okay. I can give you several phone numbers that you can call.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: There’s a 1-800 number to the Planned Parenthood in St. Paul.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 877-890-6225.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let’s see. And there’s one in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Is that further away?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There’s one in Minneapolis and Fargo.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll just call this one place. But do you know if — Like my friend told me that — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents would have to sign some things. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: I think you’d have to talk to them about it.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for like a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Yes. Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: There is some paperwork to fill out, but yes, you could.

CALLER: Well, does my boyfriend have to fill out anything at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Just you.

CALLER: Oh okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you have time tomorrow, we could do it tomorrow.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but I don’t know.

CLINIC: Are you late for a period?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, my last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Oh. And you’re not using birth control?

CALLER: No. But if the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: That you’d need an appointment for. You’d have to have a birth control appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Okay. So I’ll call my boyfriend and see what he says. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye Bye.

CALLER: Thanks. Bye.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. You wanted to know some names of abortion clinics?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Now the places to obtain abortions are going to be either Fargo, Duluth, Minneapolis or St. Paul.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? A location that works best for you though?

CALLER: Probably Fargo.

CLINIC: Fargo? Okay. Red River Women’s Clinic is in Fargo. And their toll free number is 888-928-9009.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of that?

CLINIC: You know what? I don’t think I would be telling people that you’re 13 years old and you’re dating a 22-year-old-man.

CALLER: Why not?

CLINIC: Because that’s statutory rape, and your boyfriend might end up in jail.

CALLER: What is statu — he could end up in jail?

CLINIC: It means that you’re not old enough to give consent to have sex with a 22-year-old-man.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: In the eyes of the law you’re not old enough to give consent, okay? I know on an individual basis that might be different, but we’re talking about the law here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And the law states that a 22-year-old man having sex with a 13-year-old girl is illegal, okay?

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: You need to talk to your mom.

CALLER: My last period was like in December, and I’m just worried.

CLINIC: Okay. I would first of all really encourage you to talk to your mom about this.

CALLER: But I can’t. She won’t understand at all. She hates him.

CLINIC: Well, you know, yeah, Mom might get mad, but it would be a really great thing if you could talk to her about this. This is very important.

CALLER: But I can’t. She would get furious. I don’t know what she would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Then why don’t you call the abortion clinic and talk to them about how to get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You’re going to have to go talk to a judge and tell the judge the situation, and a judge may give you permission to have an abortion without notifying your parents.

CALLER: Do you think that I couldn’t be pregnant maybe?

CLINIC: Sure. Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Maybe you need a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, could I do that there?

CLINIC: Yes, you can. We’re here until 4:30 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what about tomorrow?

CLINIC: 11 until 6:30 we’re here.

CALLER: Well, if I came in for a pregnancy test, would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend is there with me? Because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Ummm, yeah. That will be fine.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to say anything? Like, would he have to fill out any papers or anything?

CLINIC: Can you hold for just a minute?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

RECORDING: (Message Repeated)

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, that’s not a problem. Just come on in tomorrow before 6:30.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to talk to him or he wouldn’t have to talk to anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I just don’t want him to get arrested or anything.

CLINIC: Okay. But it is a crime if there is sexual contact or penetration and the complainant is under 13 years of age. So if you’re 12 years old and having sex with anyone, it is illegal.

CALLER: Yeah, but I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re going to be 14?

CALLER: In March.

CLINIC: Okay. And he’s more than two years older than you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay. So that’s a crime. It’s not a mandatory report. I don’t have to turn him in to the law.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But I’m going to talk to you about that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: It’s just I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: We can make you an appointment to get on to a birth control method.

CALLER: But you guys don’t have to tell anybody that I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope, I don’t.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. You’re Heidi?

CLINIC: No, this is Paula.

CALLER: Oh, all right. So like if I had any other questions, I could call and ask for you?

CLINIC: You bet, uh-hmm.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. You can get a judicial bypass where your parents don’t need to know or don’t need to sign. And once you call that number, they will tell you everything you need to know and what steps you need to go through and that kind of thing. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, it’s just like my last period – I’m not real sure – but my last period was like December 4th. But I’m just worried and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Why don’t you come in and get a pregnancy test done first?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right to do that and my parents wouldn’t have to find out about it?

CLINIC: Right. No, they would not. It’s strictly confidential. Your last period was December you said?

CALLER: It was like December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th. Yeah. Why don’t you come in and let’s do a pregnancy test, and then we’ll take it from there. And yes, it’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We’re here until 4:30 today. So if you could get here before 4:30 for sure. Otherwise, tomorrow we’re here until 6.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend comes with me and is there with me?

CLINIC: Certainly.

CALLER: Does he have to fill out anything or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because he just doesn’t want anybody to know about us.

CLINIC: No. No, not at all.

CALLER: Alright. Well, if the pregnancy test ended up being negative, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, so everything we do is strictly confidential. We wouldn’t divulge any of that information to anyone, including parents, no matter how old you are.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.
