CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Shariva (sp). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We do it at our downtown Baltimore office and Annapolis. Would you like that number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Downtown Baltimore number is 410-576-1414.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And the Annapolis is 410-269-1020.

CALLER: All right. Well, I was actually — like do you know if there’s an age limit to have an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: I think you have to sign some type of consent. I’m not for sure. So that’s why you would need to call down there and they can tell you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like it’s just my friend told me that you guys have to tell about my boyfriend too. Like he’ll be — he’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married and everything, but you guys can’t tell my parents at all because they absolutely hate him. They just think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, like I said, and just explain your situation to them down there because they are the ones that, you know, handle that.

CALLER: Well, I was actually wondering if I could take a pregnancy test. Like she said to call you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can do a walk-in for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can come in any time. We’re open until 4:00 today.

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, it’s fine.

CALLER: Okay, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about taking a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. All your information is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if after the pregnancy test if I ended up not being pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No. All your information is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Potomac Family Planning Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: It ranges by the number of weeks in the pregnancy. How far along are you?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3, and I’m really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Since January. So probably December was the last time you had a normal one?

CALLER: Well, January was a normal one.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. When did you have it in January?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Hold on just a minute. Okay. You’re probably about 9 weeks if your date is correct.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And local anesthesia where you’re awake and would feel the cramping is $250.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Twilight anesthesia where you’re sedated — hold on just a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. Twilight where you’re sedated but not fully asleep is $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: With general anesthesia where you’re completely asleep is $410.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which one would you like?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we can give you appointments this week if you wanted to come in. We do them on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do the twilight and the general sleep on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we do the locals every day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — another thing I’m worried about is, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. Do you look 14?

CALLER: Well, I guess. Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: (laughs) We don’t ask for identification.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I hate to say this, but we don’t ask for identification, so whatever someone puts down on their age is what we go by. I mean, I’m not going to ask you for an ID.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only time we ask for ID is if someone’s paying with a credit card, and whoever is paying with a credit card has to show ID.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Other than that, we don’t ask for ID. So you know, you take it from there.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay with cash, so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, you know, like I said —

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. We just don’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If he was paying would you have to —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — have him sign anything

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And whatever name you put on that paper is the name that we call you by.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Read in between the lines there.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way you think that I’m not pregnant though?

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test, one of those over-the-counter?

CALLER: No. I didn’t know that those were right.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can go and buy one like at CVS somewhere or any drugstore and buy one of those. They’re about $15 I think.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And test it out. If it turns out positive, then chances are you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well if I wasn’t, could I come in and get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, uh-huh. You can come in and get the pills, birth control pills. We also have a depo provera shot which is $60 and it lasts three months, so you don’t have to keep taking pills.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you can come and get pills here as well.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Like I said, we don’t ask for identification.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you come in and you say you’re 17, that’s what we go by.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if — the thing is I can’t drive. would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Yeah. I can leave them in your name and he can pick them up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I need to call him and call you back to set up an appointment, but what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Wally.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. They’re done in our Dover office and in our Annapolis office. Did you want the phone numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you have insurance at all?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything. He’s got a job. He’s 22, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have insurance at all?

CALLER: No. He was going to pay cash so.

CLINIC: Okay. The Dover is 302-678-5200. And Annapolis is 410-269-1020.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s like an age limit for anything like that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You probably have a better time going to Annapolis then.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because the laws in Delaware are a little different.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But call both places and see if you want, because Dover’s a little bit closer.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know if they have to tell my parents or anything because they can’t find out.

CLINIC: That I’m not sure of. I’m not sure of the laws. The laws in Maryland I know you don’t. You’d be okay.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay? So you may just want to go ahead and call Annapolis.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like say that I wasn’t pregnant. My friend told me to go to you guys, so that’s why I’m calling you. But —

CLINIC: Have you had a test done to confirm it?

CALLER: Well, not really. I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay, did you want to come in here?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We’ll be here today until 4:00, and we can at least do the test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I need you to bring your school ID with you though.

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled. I don’t have one.

CLINIC: I need some kind of proof of income.

CALLER: But I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Yeah, I know. I don’t know — well, just come in and we’ll figure it out when you get here, okay?

CALLER: Well, should I bring anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know what you should bring. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You don’t really have anything.

CALLER: What about like my boyfriend’s income?

CLINIC: Well, but you don’t live with him, right?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. Just come in. We’ll get you to fill out a form and we’ll try to —

CALLER: Does he have to fill out anything then?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh. You’re the patient.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay? And do you know where we are?

CALLER: Well, he does.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re in Court Plaza 13, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, like after the pregnancy test like if I wasn’t pregnant or anything, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. We could get you some pills.

CALLER: We’re just really scared. We just — but you guys don’t have to tell anybody about that, right?

CLINIC: Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it — like I need to talk to my boyfriend and see.

CLINIC: We’re here until 4:00. If you could come in before 3:15 that would be best, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back if I think of anything else to ask?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Becky.

CALLER: Becky? All right. Thanks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: Under 12 weeks?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I just haven’t had my period since January 3, so.

CLINIC: Only if he’s using a credit card.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, he said that he would pay cash, so.

CLINIC: Okay. You just need to make an appointment.

CALLER: So there wouldn’t be any records of this and no one would have to find out anything?

CLINIC: There are going to be records because we are a legal medical facility. But we don’t call your parents. The only way anybody can get your information is if they subpoena it.

CALLER: Well, I’m just talking about like my boyfriend. Would there be any record of him?

CLINIC: Only if you put his name on anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But he doesn’t have to do that if he pays for everything with cash?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well —

CLINIC: And how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So, but it’s just — I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet, so do you guys do that there — just to make sure?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can get a home test and make sure you’re pregnant before you go scaring yourself though.

CALLER: Oh. Well, are those usually right?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I just — okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this any more, but would, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: For just a checkup, you’ve never been here before, it’s $100.

CALLER: Okay. And then how much would the birth control be?

CLINIC: They’ll give you a pack of pills to start and a prescription for six months.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So, but the thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills, or —

CLINIC: No. You have to be seen by the doctor.

CALLER: Okay. But after that?

CLINIC: You’re going to get a prescription. You just go get it filled every month and then when you start the last pack you get another checkup. You get your checkup every six months and a pap smear once a year.

CALLER: Okay. When do you normally have appointments available for a pregnancy test and stuff?

CLINIC: For a pregnancy test it’s walk-in.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: There’s a $5 fee.

CALLER: Okay. Do you ever have any hours on Saturday?

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Not this Saturday though.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Saturdays we won’t be back until the 16th on a Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right to come in on a Saturday that’s not this next one?

CLINIC: Around what time?

CALLER: Well I don’t know. When are your hours?

CLINIC: Anywhere from 9:00 to 1:00. No. Yeah, 9:00 to 1:00. But call first to make sure we’re still here.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. Gail speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood does at our sites in either Annapolis or Baltimore. There’s nothing at all in Charles, Calvert or St. Mary’s.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well —

CLINIC: Would you like the number for Annapolis?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s area code 301-645 — I’m sorry. I’m giving you our number. Duh. Okay, it’s 410-269-1020.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if there’s like an age limit to have an abortion? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You just need to give them a call.

CALLER: Oh. So you don’t know? Like my friend told me that you guys have like an age limit and stuff.

CLINIC: Age has nothing to do with it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So that’s why you need to call them and discuss it with them. Okay?

CALLER: Well, she also said that you guys have to like know that my — like my boyfriend’s 22, and he was going to take care of everything. Is that all right? Like you wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: I’m telling you. I’m not the one that can tell you that information. You would have to call there.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: They have to assess you. They have to make that decision themselves.

CALLER: Well, do you guys do like the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We can do a pregnancy test here, yes. We do that on a walk-in basis. It’s a $45 fee, and that includes the counseling session. We’ll go over your options with you, whatever your options.

CALLER: I’m just scared because like if my parents find out they’ll flip out because like they hate my boyfriend because they think he’s too old for me, so they can’t find out at all. What can I do? Like would you guys have to tell them at all?

CLINIC: We don’t get involved between you and your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So all I can tell you is if you want a pregnancy test, you can come in and have a pregnancy test. Everything between you and us is confidential.
