CLINIC: Causeway Medical. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It’s based on how many weeks you are.
CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?
CLINIC: You need to go get an ultra sound.
CALLER: Okay. Well, I just haven’t had my period since January 15th, and I’m worried. So would you guys do a pregnancy test there too?
CLINIC: Yes, they do.
CALLER: Okay. My problem is, I’m kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said he would take care of it. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, you would need a parent, sweetie.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.
CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell my parents at all though?
CLINIC: You need to have a parent because you’re a minor.
CALLER: But I can’t tell them. I mean, they’d be furious if they found out.
CLINIC: Well, I mean, I don’t know what else you can do.
CALLER: Well, is there anyplace else I could go?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: I don’t know anywhere you can go without an adult with you if you’re just 13 years old.
CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Yes, you can.
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody then?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Well how much does it cost for a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: It’s free. Just come in.
CALLER: What time are you guys there ’til?
CLINIC: Until 5.
CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right?
CLINIC: Yeah, he can bring you.
CALLER: Okay. But he wouldn’t have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Alright. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: No? Where could I get it then?
CLINIC: I don’t know.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about this anymore if I end up not being pregnant.
CLINIC: Okay. Could you give us a call back?
CALLER: Okay. And what was your name?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Glenda. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: No, we don’t. I can give you two names, two numbers for two places we have.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay, the first one is Carlsby (Crosby?) Medical Suite, and the number is 837-1272. And the next one is New Orleans East Women’s Clinic, and the number is 244-9681.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And that’s it. That’s all I have.
CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because my friend said that — well, I’m going to be 14 in March. And she said that you guys — that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of all that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: Yeah. I don’t think they would tell your parents. Just call in.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Right. Just call and talk them and see what they say, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared because like my period — I haven’t had my period since December 21st. Is it all right to come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?
CLINIC: Yes. It’s fine.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for a —
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: — pregnancy test?
CLINIC: Uh-uh. It’s strictly confidential.
CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend is there with me?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just, we were talking about all this and we don’t want anyone to know.
CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine. If it’s strictly confidential, okay?
CALLER: All right. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: Yes, you will have to make an appointment for that. If you want to come in and take a pregnancy test you can just come on in and just walk in. You don’t need an appointment. But if you want to get on birth controls, you have to make an appointment. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, would anyone have to know that I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Um-um.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: Thank you.
CALLER: Thank you.
CLINIC: You’re welcome. Good bye.

CLINIC: New Orleans East Women’s Clinic.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling actually to see if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: How far pregnant?
CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?
CLINIC: When was your last period?
CALLER: January 15th.
CLINIC: You usually get pregnant two weeks before your period. Going by a period of January 15th, you’re going to be right about eight weeks right now. It will be $350.
CALLER: Okay. Well the thing is, I’m kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No, he’s not your legal guardian. The only way you can get out of telling your parents is if you’re married and you’re legally emancipated. You’d have to just bring in your marriage license with an id, or you’d have to go to juvenile court and ask the judge to give you permission to terminate on your own being a minor.
CALLER: Do they usually say it’s all right then?
CLINIC: I think it really depends. Each case is different. I’ve had some girls go down there, and they get the paper; other girls were sent away. It really depends on what parish you live in. What parish do you live in?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What parish do you live in?
CALLER: Oh, I live in New Orleans.
CLINIC: New Orleans. Usually it’s harder in New Orleans, Jefferson, for some reason.
CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said he would pay for everything. If I went to court and the judge said it was all right, would it be okay if he paid for everything, and you wouldn’t have to have him sign anything or have his name on anything?
CLINIC: No. His name doesn’t have to be on anything.
CALLER: Alright. Would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure I am pregnant?
CLINIC: Yeah. But you can do a home test also. They’re very accurate.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Oh, well how much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It would be $60. And that would include a birth control full prescription for six months, a pap exam and breath exam.
CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody about that though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Liz.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Hope Medical. This is Samantha. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: $350 as long as you’re under 12 weeks.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: The first thing that you have to do in Louisiana is come in for a state-required doctor’s measurement.
CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?
CLINIC: Well, you can estimate how many weeks you are from the first day of your last cycle. Do you know when that was?
CALLER: January 3.
CLINIC: If it was January 3 you should be about 9 weeks right now, 9 to 10 weeks.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: So $350 would be your fee until you get to 12 weeks. At 12 weeks it goes up to $400. The first thing that you do is come in for a doctor’s session. And at that doctor’s session we’ll give you an ultrasound to determine your length of pregnancy.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — it’s just the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. No. It’s, as a minor you have to have parental consent.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: And if you can’t get parental consent, there is something else you can do. You can go talk to a judge.
CALLER: Uh-huh.
CLINIC: And he can decide whether or not you’re mature enough to make the decision to have an abortion on your own.
CALLER: Do I need like a lawyer for that?
CLINIC: No. What you could do is come to that first session.
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: And we could give you the paperwork to do that. But I’m not sure in your situation, you know, like what your chances would be of getting that since the person you’re involved with is not a minor.
CALLER: Oh. Would it be better not to say anything about him?
CLINIC: I’m not sure.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: I don’t know. I really — I don’t have any advice to give you about that. But that’s another option.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Otherwise, you’re — yeah, you’ll have to have a notarized statement from one of your parents stating that they give you permission to have an abortion.
CALLER: Okay. But does the judge ever say no if I go to him?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah. I mean, that is an option that he has. I mean, he can tell you that — or he can decide that you are not mature enough to make the decision on your own without your parents, and in that case the only thing left for you to do is to get your parental consent.
CALLER: Oh. Well, I just, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it could be. Like especially with young girls. Like there are lots of time is when your periods may not come for whatever reason.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Lifestyle — if you’re very active, if your diet has changed. You should take a pregnancy test. Where do you live?
CALLER: I live in Bosier City.
CLINIC: You could come take a pregnancy test here for free.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yeah, if you come in by 4:00.
CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was there for a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That’s completely confidential, and anonymous, although you do have to give your name, but that’s all.
CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but he doesn’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?
CLINIC: No. I mean, he would need to — like we only accept payment in the form of money order or credit card. I mean, if he —
CALLER: He could pay cash.
CLINIC: Well, we can’t take cash, so he could get a money order, and that would probably be his best bet if you want to keep everything very confidential.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: You know, because if he wanted to pay with a credit card we would request ID from him and everything.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: But, yeah, the first thing you have to do is come in for that doctor session. So what I suggest you do first is come in for a pregnancy test to be sure you’re pregnant in the first place, and then we’ll go from there.
CALLER: Okay. But if he paid with a money order then you wouldn’t have to say anything to anybody?
CLINIC: We aren’t going to say anything to anybody anyway. This is absolutely confidential. I’m saying, if you paid with a credit card we would make a copy of his license for your chart, and if he’s so concerned about his privacy he probably wouldn’t like that. So a money order would probably be the way for him to go. But we’re not going to discuss your — you know. We’re not going to discuss your situation with anybody.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about all this anymore?
CLINIC: We only give birth control to our patients, so what you need to do to get birth control is call like LSU Medical Center. You can get an appointment there. And that’s what you should do, okay?
CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: I don’t think so. I”m not sure. I’m not sure what their policy is.
CALLER: Oh. All right.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Okay. So I could call you back and get an appointment for the pregnancy test then?
CLINIC: Sure. Yeah, you don’t have to make an appointment. Just come in.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Every weekday from 9 to 4.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: All right. So thanks.
CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.
