CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: It’s $395 if you want to be awake. If you want to be asleep it’s $490.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You need to have a parental notification. You need to come with your legal guardian or a parent. You cannot do it on your own. You can do it on your own, but we need to have — there’s no special price for that, but if you’re 14 you have to be asleep. We need to put you to sleep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way not to have my parents there because they can’t —

CLINIC: No. No. We have to — they can’t — they don’t have to be here, but one of your parents has to sign a notification that they know that you’re having the abortion. It cannot be done without their — we don’t need for them to agree to it. But they need to sign a form that they are aware that that’s what you are doing.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Can he sign it?

CLINIC: No. You have to have a legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell them?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Because they hate my boyfriend and they can’t find out at all because like they just think he’s too old for me, and if they found out that — if they found out we were having sex they would freak.

CLINIC: Yes, but that’s the law. I’m sorry. I mean, this is the law all over Georgia. If you are 14 you cannot have it done unless a legal guardian — whether it’s an aunt, a brother, sister, that the legal guardian or parent, especially at your age a parent has to be notified and they have to sign a paper.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: They don’t have to agree to it, but they have to sign that they know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Do you what?

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell anything, anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: We have a confidentiality. We don’t say anything to anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we need to have one of your parents come and sign a paper.

CALLER: But I can’t do that.

CLINIC: I know. I’m sorry. But this is the law because we cannot break the law.

CALLER: But I mean, if they found out I don’t know what they would do. They would flip out.

CLINIC: I understand, but if you want to come and talk to somebody you’re more than welcome to come down here, but this is the law. We can’t change it.

CALLER: But would you guys have to tell my parents if I’m there?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody, but if you want to have surgery we cannot do it without your parental notification. It’s not going to happen. We just can’t do it.

CALLER: So there’s like nothing I can do at all?

CLINIC: The only thing you can — any — if you’re planning to have an abortion, anywhere you go, one of your parents has to sign a form telling that you know that that’s what you’re doing.

CALLER: Well, my —

CLINIC: That’s going to happen anywhere you go. This is the state law.

CALLER: Well, my friend, she said that she could go to a lawyer. Is there anything I could do like with that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: I don’t know where she got that information, but a lawyer cannot sign instead of a legal guardian of yourself. That’s just the law. This is the Georgia law. It’s a state law, and this is what is required. We cannot do it otherwise.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call you back if I had any other questions?

CLINIC: Sure. You can call any time. We close at 1:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Micky.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 4X)

CLINIC: Northside Women’s Clinic. Can you hold just a moment?

CALLER: Well, I was actually calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And are you insured or have any medical benefits that can help you out in any way?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. If you’re uninsured and you’re between 6 and 11 weeks, the state has offered the uninsured patient the total of 435 for the procedure and 15 for the medicines that you would need after surgery.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 on the 19th of this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would pay for everything. Would that be all right, and he could take care of it all, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, unfortunately, Georgia law requires that if your parent doesn’t come with you to sign for you, you have to bring a letter signed stating that they understand you’re coming in for the termination of pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents though?

CLINIC: Well, all I can tell you is that we don’t verify the letter, but you have to have it with you. And it becomes a part of your permanent record.

CALLER: Okay. So you don’t look for a signature or anything?

CLINIC: No, the signature has to be on there, but we don’t call to verify.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. And he said he would pay for everything, but we just don’t want to have his name on anything. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. The letter just has to be signed by a parent or guardian stating that they understand you’re here to terminate a pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay. Alright. Well would you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes. They’ll do a test and an ultra sound before you ever go to surgery to make sure.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore.

CLINIC: Right. Unfortunately, since we’re just strictly an outpatient surgery, we don’t do any gynecology. We couldn’t do that. So they’d probably recommend that you go to the Health Department or if you have a doctor, to go back to your doctor.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Ricky. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

(dialing sound) (ringing 5X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not do terminations. I can give you numbers to clinics that do in the Atlanta area.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Ready?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: First one is the Atlanta Woman’s Medical Center.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 404-257-0057.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The Northside Woman’s Clinic. 770-455-4210. The Atlanta Surgical Center, 404-892-8608.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The Feminist Woman Health Center. 404-874-7551.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you like — my friend told me that you have to be a certain age for that. Like I’ll be 14 in March. Is that all right?

CLINIC: You will have to call the clinics and ask them that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know like if it’s all right if my boyfriend takes me?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Yeah. You are — when you call them, because you need to set up an appointment; and you can’t just show up — when you call them they’ll tell you that you need to show up with someone.

CALLER: Okay. My friend also said that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: We don’t. We don’t.

CALLER: All right. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Because — okay. I just can’t tell my parents at all. So —

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. When you call the clinic, they’ll go over everything with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can go with your boyfriend as long as he’s older than 21.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It has to be an adult older than 21.

CALLER: So an adult older than 21 can take me? Because my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about it or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant. Could I get birth control where you’re at?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive, but I don’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. When was the last time you had sex?

CALLER: Well, it was like two days ago.

CLINIC: Okay. If you took a pregnancy test and it told you it was positive, it’s looking for a hormone that’s only in your body when you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When you go to have the termination when you call them, they’ll give you all the information you need.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Your parents don’t have to go with you. There’s something called parental notification.

CALLER: Okay. How do I —

CLINIC: You need to go to the clinic with a note. (hinting) It doesn’t have to be signed right in front of a lawyer. It doesn’t have to be notarized or anything. It’s just a note on a piece of paper that says that your parents know or your legal guardian knows that you’re going to go and have the termination done.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: What do you mean?

CALLER: Like they can’t find out that I’m going to find out I’m going to have an abortion because they hate my boyfriend because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: That’s the law in Georgia. They don’t — you need to have a note from a parent that says that they know that you’re going to have the termination.

CALLER: And there’s no way that they can’t find out?

CLINIC: That’s the law in Georgia. It’s not– (Hinting) You don’t have to sign it in front of a judge. You don’t have to have it notarized or sign in front of a lawyer. Just a note on a piece of paper saying “I know that X person is going to have a termination.” And then sign it. That’s it.

CALLER: Yeah. But if they have to sign that paper, they’re going to know. I mean, is there any way they don’t have to do that? I mean, what can I do?

CLINIC: Not to my knowledge. Not to my knowledge. You can call the clinics and see what they tell you, but in Georgia you have to do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, but you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: We don’t do that. You’re not going to come and have a termination at Planned Parenthood, so we wouldn’t have anything to do with it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Even if you did, we don’t divulge information to anyone. All services are confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I call and talk to my boyfriend and then call you back if I had any questions?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Because you’re just nice, and I don’t want to talk to anyone else, so.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Denise.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

(dialing sound) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Shannon speaking. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But if you’ll hold on just one moment I’ll give you some phone numbers of some places.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold on, please.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, thanks for holding. The first place that we have is the Atlanta Surgi Center. The telephone number is 404-892-8608. The second place is the Atlanta Women’s Medical Center. And that is 404-257-0057. The third place is the Feminist Women’s Health Center. That telephone number is 404-874-7551. And then another place is Northside Women’s Clinic, and that’s 770-455-4210. And these are all in Atlanta.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like — well like my friend told me like since that I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Um, I do believe that you have to have parental consent if you’re that young.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents? It’s just, I can’t tell them anything.

CLINIC: I’m not real familiar with those rules and laws and stuff. You’ll have to call and ask them what they need from you. And sometimes, I think some places do it with a note.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So, yeah, bring parent or note if you’re a minor.

CALLER: What kind of note?

CLINIC: The Feminist Women’s Health Center. I don’t know. I guess it’s just a permission thing.

CALLER: Like from my parents, or —

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, yeah. And then you just have to be accompanied by someone 18 or older. But if you’re boyfriend’s 22, then he’s 18 or older. So…

CALLER: Yeah. All right.

CLINIC: You have to call these places though and find out.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to see if I was pregnant?

CLINIC: Oh, yes. We do them for $20 here. And you don’t — you just come in.

CALLER: Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: Oh, no. No, no, no. Ours is totally confidential.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Regardless of age.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend — I would really feel better if he was there with me because — would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he said that he was going to pay for everything. So, but we don’t, we were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nope. And he can pay cash, check, credit card or whatever. It’s not — no, no, no. Ours is totally confidential.

CALLER: All right. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you could, and that’s confidential also.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. You wouldn’t need your parents’ permission to do that either.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So. If I was on birth control, could he pick it up? Because I can’t drive. I don’t have a car or anything.

CLINIC: Yes, he can. The only thing is that you would have to come like after the third pack because they need you to take your blood pressure, or whatever.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But, yeah, most of the time — a lot of guys pick up their pills for their girlfriends or wives, or whatever.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: It’s not really a problem.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Good luck. You’re more than welcome to come in. We close at 4:00 today. We close at 6:00 on Wednesday. We’re closed on Thursday. We’re open 8:00 to 3:00 on Friday and 9:00 to 1:00 on Saturday.
