CLINIC: Little Rock Family Planning. This is Chris. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: Do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.

CALLER: Oh. How do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: When was your last menstrual period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Hold on one second.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (pause) You said January the 18th?

CALLER: The third.

(pause)

CALLER: Are you still there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. I got you showing to be about 9 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? 3 to 11 weeks you’re looking at $525 if you want to be put to sleep. If not, you’re looking at $475.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You have to either have a parental consent or you have to come into our office and do what’s called a court bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s where you’ll be emancipated as a — the judge. You’ll have to go down to the courthouse, and he’ll emancipate you to have this procedure done.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need like a lawyer for that, or?

CLINIC: No, you don’t need a lawyer. You come and get the paperwork from us.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say that I can’t? Like does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: It depends on what reason he would have to do that. But normally, no. He does not.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but he doesn’t want anybody to know about us. Would you– if he was paying for everything would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No, he wouldn’t have to sign anything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell the judge about him or anything?

CLINIC: You would have to come in. We’ll do an ultrasound. One-on-one private counseling we’ll collect the rest of the fee, and we’ll send you down to the court.

CALLER: Okay. But would the judge have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No, the judge doesn’t even see your boyfriend because that would lessen your chances.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So, but if I turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: No. You have to go find your gynecologist or physician.

CALLER: Okay. So how do I set up an appointment to come there?

CLINIC: I can set you up one right now.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend works 8 to 5, and he’d be the only way I could get there. Do you guys —

CLINIC: Do you want to call him and check your schedule?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, and my name is Chris.

CALLER: Okay. Well, when do you guys normally have — when do you have an opening?

CLINIC: I can see you either Thursday, Friday or Saturday — well, Thursday or Friday of this week is when I can see you.

CALLER: What time on that? What time on Thursday or Friday?

CLINIC: I can see you around 1:15 on Thursday or Friday.

CALLER: Okay. When would the judge see me? The same day, or —

CLINIC: Yeah, the same day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So it’s just all in the same day and everything and it’s just a one-day thing?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. It’s Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we sure don’t. I can give you a number to someone who does though.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: It’s Little Rock Family Planning. The number is 225-3836.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like — I’m just really —

CLINIC: Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) I’m sorry. What was your question?

CALLER: I’m just worried because like I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I have no idea, ma’am. Because we don’t do that here. You need to call them. They’ll know all the legal ins and outs.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You don’t know for sure yet that you are?

CALLER: No, I’m just scared because like I haven’t had my period since December 21st, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay, so you don’t know for sure that you are or not?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. No, yeah, you can do that here. I thought you just wanted — you said you just wanted a number for a place that does abortions.

CALLER: Well, that’s what my boyfriend told me to ask for, so. I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. So what is it that you want? Do you need abortion services or do you want a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I need a pregnancy test. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. I can put you in Wednesday at 11:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Do you want that appointment?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you want that appointment?

CALLER: Yeah. But I need to call my boyfriend to see if he can get that time off work, but I guess — could I just call back and cancel if I needed to?

CLINIC: Yeah. What’s your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And what’s your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Okay. Thank you.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there though?

CLINIC: You have to make a separate appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, well —

CLINIC: So you need to come in for that first, and then we can set you up on that.

CALLER: How long does the exam take for the birth control?

CLINIC: I can’t tell you that. I don’t know.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know if I was on birth control that you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yes. No, no, no. We wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just don’t want to have to go through all this again. So, if I need to cancel can I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Call back. Tracy.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye

CALLER: Bye.
