CLINIC: Appointments. This is Brandy.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: It’s $570. And that’s cash or Visa, Master Card, Discover. We wouldn’t take a check for that.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if you have to be a specific age for that? I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, no, that’s fine. There’s no parental consent in the state of Alaska, so you don’t need — nobody has to know but you.

CALLER: My friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. That’s not true, hon.

CALLER: Well, she also said that you guys would have to know my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No, it’s not. That’s fine, unless it was like an issue of rape.

CALLER: No. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay, no. It’s your business.

CALLER: The main reason why I’m scared of all this is because I haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. And we only perform them between 7 and 14 weeks. And it looks like you were seven weeks on February 20th. So I can just put you in the next available that I have.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you going to pay for the procedure or did you have Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s $570.

CALLER: Do you guys do the pregnancy test there just to make sure?

CLINIC: What we’re going to do is an ultra sound to be sure that you are.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Did you already take a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No, you haven’t taken a pregnancy test. So you’re not even sure that you are pregnant for sure-for sure?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What you need to do is go ahead and take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Do I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Right. I can go ahead and book you an appointment, but if you’re not pregnant, then you wouldn’t need to come.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control that day?

CLINIC: If you were pregnant?

CALLER: If I wasn’t.

CLINIC: Yes. No. You would need the whole physical examination. Are you from Anchorage?

CALLER: I’m in Willow.

CLINIC: Yeah. You would need the whole physical examination. And when you come in for your termination then we would give you birth control at that time.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, hon. We don’t have to tell anybody. It’s your body.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: So do you want to book an appointment or do you want to think about it? Do you want to get a home pregnancy test and make sure that you are pregnant?

CALLER: Yeah. But I need to call my boyfriend to see when he’d get off work to take me.

CLINIC: Well, you can just get a pregnancy test at Wal-Mart. Just pick up one of those urine pregnancy tests, like the EPT or one of those pregnancy tests. Then just take it at home. And then if it’s positive, go ahead and give me a call back.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Brandy. And what was your name?

CALLER: It’s Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. I’ll wait to hear back from you.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Hello, this is Carrie. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Do you have a pen?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I have a number for Alaska Women’s Health Services.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Their number is 563-7228.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I also have a number for Dr. Murphy. And her number is 770-5432.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I also have a number for Dr. Orrin (sp), and his number is 563-3601.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know, I’m just worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — like is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Let me check real quick, okay? Can you hold on for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thanks. (music) Hello?

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: No, you’re not going to need any type of parental consent at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you — well I’m just worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. Could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You sure can. Can you come in this morning?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to– probably this afternoon.

CLINIC: Have you ever been before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: What do you mean, tell anybody?

CALLER: Well, would my parents have to know?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What time can you come in this afternoon?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see because he would be the only way I could get there. But —

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Why don’t you call your boyfriend and then give me a call back so I can schedule you, okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if he brings me and if he comes in?

CLINIC: That’s fine. Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just, we don’t want my parents to know about all this, but he was going to pay for everything. But would he have to sign anything or anything?

CLINIC: No, he won’t have to sign anything at all. So are you on birth control?

CALLER: Well, no. That’s the thing.

CLINIC: Would you like to get started on birth control?

CALLER: Yeah, if I could.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. Why don’t you go ahead and call your boyfriend and see when he can bring you in and then give me a call back? Okay? Because we can also get you started on birth control after you have the procedure done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: Not today. Tomorrow afternoon you can.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would anybody have to know about me being on birth control?

CLINIC: Just you. You’re the only person that will have to know. Okay, we don’t need your parents’ signature or anything like that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I can’t drive to pick up the birth control. Would my boyfriend be able to get them?

CLINIC: Yeah. He can, but you can also — if you get on birth control pills you can get like a year’s worth of pills at a time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And do you have a job or anything? Are you going to school?

CALLER: No. I’m home-schooled.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re not employed either?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then your birth control pills would probably be really cheap like a dollar a month.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So go ahead and call him and find out when you can come in and give me a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Carrie. I’ll be the one answering the phone.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.
