Police have arrested the mother of a newborn baby after she threw the infant in a trash dumpster.

Shelby Taylor

South Carolina resident, Austin Detray told WJHL that he was taking out trash and heard a faint sound that he thought was a kitten or cat when he discovered the baby inside a bag of trash in the dumpster.

I got two or three bags down and saw the baby’s face pressed against the bag,” he said.

Detray said the bag was tied shut. “I ripped it open and the umbilical cord was still there, the placenta, it was just born,” he said.

We just leaned (the baby) on its side .. You know, it still had mucus in its system, and it was still puking up stuff. Still had the umbilical cord attached to it, and we just stayed by its side and waited for the ambulance to come,” Detray said.

Jessica Detray, who helped provide care for the baby before first responders arrived on scene called throwing a newborn baby in the trash “terrible”

It hurts my heart to know anybody who could harm a child. My hopes for this baby is to live and have a wonderful, beautiful life,” she said.

The baby girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she is reported to be in “stable” condition.
