CLINIC: Planned Parenthood of Warminster (sp). May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, we do.

CALLER: And how much does that cost?

CLINIC: If you’re under 12 weeks it’s $305 for a local and $390 for IV sedation.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys — like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my mom and dad before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Are you under 18?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes, we would need parental consent, yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? Because like if they found out they would freak. Like my boyfriend, he’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me, so.

CLINIC: If you — you can try to get a court order from a judge if you can present reasonable, you know, reason that you shouldn’t have to tell your parents. You could also contact —

CALLER: Like what kind of reason?

CLINIC: — (unclear) in New Jersey. The sort of reason where your life could be threatened, something like that, if you were to reveal it — that sort of thing.

CALLER: Okay. Does the judge have to say — like does the judge ever say no, like —

CLINIC: I’m sure that they would, yes. They would have to weigh the evidence.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like do I have to get a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: You know what? I’m not exactly sure how you proceed with that. Can you hold one moment and I’ll find out?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. We’d actually have to call one of our supervisors to find out about that. Can I have a number where we can call you back?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I’m at my friend’s house, and if — her mom’s here, so if she picks up there wouldn’t be any way like —

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to call us back later? We’ll find out for you and we’ll just have the information.

CALLER: Yeah. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Nicole.

CALLER: Nicole?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if you guys — like say that I wasn’t pregnant and I wanted to get birth control, do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, we do.

CALLER: And would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, not for just an exam and oral contraceptives, no.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if my boyfriend comes with me?

CLINIC: Sure. He can’t come in the exam room with you, but he can accompany you here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But I wouldn’t have to give his name or anything?

CLINIC: No, not his name, absolutely not, just your name.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good bye.

TAPE – 138 Pt 2: The Call Back

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in Warminster. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I was wondering if I could talk to Nicole?

CLINIC: Okay. May I ask who’s calling?

CALLER: This is Christine.

CLINIC: Hold on one moment.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Is this Nicole?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Hi. This is — I called like a little while ago. I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m sorry. I had many phone calls. Can you refresh me?

CALLER: Well, I was the 13-year-old with the 22-year-old —

CLINIC: Oh, right, right. We’re still waiting to hear back from our supervisor.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to call back later today?

CALLER: Well, you were saying something about going to New Jersey. Did you have that phone number or —

CLINIC: Sure. There are several clinics in New Jersey where it’s not necessary to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let’s see here. New Jersey —

CALLER: Do you know if it’s all right if my boyfriend takes me there?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Do you know if it’s all right if my boyfriend takes me there?

CLINIC: I don’t know why it wouldn’t be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let’s see —

CALLER: And they don’t have to tell on him or anything?

CLINIC: They don’t have to tell who?

CALLER: They don’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Why would they tell anybody anything?

CALLER: I don’t — like they wouldn’t tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: As far as they’re concerned it’s just your means of, you know, arrival at the clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? There’s one Planned Parenthood in Trenton. Their number is 609-599-4881.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And there’s —

CALLER: Do you know if it would be easier if I went to New Jersey? Or like —

CLINIC: It would probably be easier than getting a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m sorry. Can you hold one moment?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. There’s also the South Jersey Women’s Center. Their number is 800-240-6730.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s also the Princeton Women’s Center. Their number is 1-800-216-0016.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s also Alternatives in Atlantic City. Their number is 1-800-368-4896. There’s also Cherry Hill Women’s Center. Their number is 1-800-877-6331.

CALLER: Do you know how long I’d have to be there?

CLINIC: No, I’m sorry. You would have to speak with them directly.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And there’s one more number. It’s called Metropolitan Medical Associates. Their number is 201-567-0522.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

RECORDING: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood at Chester County.

(Message repeated in Spanish)

RECORDING: To speak with a receptionist, please remain on the line. If you know your party’s extension, please enter it now or press 9 for a last name directory. Thank you for calling. One moment please.

Planned Parenthood of Chester County provides a wide variety of reproductive healthcare services, including all —

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: It would be between 300 and $500.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what’s the difference?

CLINIC: We do four types of procedures here. We do two medical and two surgical. The two medical procedures are 350 for the safe and effective alternative method, and $500 for the FDA-approved method. And the surgical procedures are $300 for local anesthesia and $400 for local anesthesia with IV sedation.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — My main concern is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Can he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. In Pennsylvania, before you would be allowed to have an abortion, you would have to either, a) have parental consent of one of your parents, or b) go before a judge for a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what is that? I don’t want my parents to know at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, what we would do is we would set you up with a woman, Paula, here. And she would take you to a judge. And a judge would decide whether or not he thinks that your parents need to know or not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if he says that they have to know?

CLINIC: Then you would not be allowed to have an abortion. He wouldn’t tell your parents, but you would not be allowed to have an abortion in Pennsylvania.

CALLER: How much does it cost for the judge?

CLINIC: The judge is included free as a service. We have lawyers.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does he usually say it’s all right?

CLINIC: Usually they do, yes. It depends on certain circumstances like how young you are, circumstances around the pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s just a great guy, and he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: He may, yeah. If he was paying, well, he would pay by money order. But he would either have to have a certified —

CALLER: Well, he said he’d pay everything with cash.

CLINIC: No, we don’t take cash.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So a money order would be the best thing then?

CLINIC: Or a credit card.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I think he would probably want to use a money order. But would you have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: About what?

CALLER: About my boyfriend.

CLINIC: Well, the judge is going to ask.

CALLER: Oh, okay. What would he ask? I mean, would that be bad?

CLINIC: What do you mean would it be bad?

CALLER: If he knew — my boyfriend doesn’t want anyone to know about him.

CLINIC: Right. And why would that be?

CALLER: Well, he just doesn’t want anyone to know about us, because like he doesn’t want his ex-wife to know and we don’t want my parents to know. And we just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: The judge is going to ask you questions like that. And number one, because you are very young and your boyfriend is over 18, that’s basically illegal.

CALLER: It’s illegal?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: And how old is your boyfriend?

CALLER: Twenty-two.

CLINIC: Yeah. In Pennsylvania that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What?! I mean, he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to be married. I don’t understand. He said he would take care of me for the rest of my life. He can’t be in trouble. I mean, he’s the only one that’s there for me.

CLINIC: I’m not saying that. I’m just telling you that the judge is going to ask you those questions.

CALLER: Well, what should I do? What should I say?

CLINIC: You have to tell the truth. You’ll be under oath.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. That depends on the judge.

CALLER: Well, what’s the worst thing that could happen?

CLINIC: I can’t say. I don’t know.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys be able to do that there and not tell anybody?

CLINIC: We have confidentiality here. If you come in for a pregnancy test, the only way people —

CALLER: Well, if my boyfriend brought me in there, then you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him either?

CLINIC: I don’t know.

CALLER: Okay. So would it be better that he wasn’t there?

CLINIC: No, no. We have confidentiality. We’re not going to tell anybody anything about your history if you are a patient.

CALLER: Okay. But what about him?

CLINIC: If he’s not our patient, we’re not going to know anything about him.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So I shouldn’t say anything about him then?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: So I shouldn’t say anything about him then?

CLINIC: I don’t know what you’re asking me.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know what I need to do. I just don’t want anyone to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, basically you need to come in for a pregnancy test if you’re not sure you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: If you’re a teen, your services here are free for things like that. You would still be required to pay for your procedure however.

CALLER: All right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control too?

CLINIC: You would have to have a full exam with us to get birth control here.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Your services here until you’re 18 are free.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But we just don’t want to have to go through all this again, so we were wanting birth control. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Hang on one second.

(pause)

CLINIC: No. It’s all confidential just like any other doctor records. They’re confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? No one can see your records without your written permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well, also I don’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Sure. If he had a note from you and it was kept in your chart.

CALLER: Okay. All right. I’m just really confused about all this. I need to think about this. But if I had any other things to ask, could I talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Laurie. You can call me back anytime. I’m here pretty much everyday.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.

(phone ringing 3X)

CLINIC: Hello, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. The closest place we refer to is the Allentown Women’s Center.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want that number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-372-8500.

CALLER: 8500?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, yeah. In Pennsylvania there is a parental consent law. You do need to have a parent or a guardian sign for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way not to do that? ‘Cause the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all ’cause like, well, my boyfriend’s, he’s 22, but like my parents —

CLINIC: Wow (chuckle). My goodness. He could be in a heck of a lot of trouble.

CALLER: Like what?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: Like what?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14 and he’s that age. I mean, that’s —

CALLER: Well, what do I do?

CLINIC: Well, you can go to New York. But you have to rethink having a boyfriend at that age because he could really —

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, that’s what you think. But think of it long-term. Okay? You’re only 14. You have your whole live ahead of you. You know, you don’t certainly need to think about getting married right now. There’s too many opportunities for women nowadays. You certainly don’t want to be married at that young of an age to miss out on all the fun that you’re going to have (laughing). If you get married, there’s no more fun left.

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: But right now that’s not the thing to think about now. Okay? Right now, if you’re pregnant, you need to terminate the procedure if that’s what you want to do. You can go to New York. I can give you a New York number. It’s Amy Cousins. And you can call there and make an appointment. Do you have someone to take you down?

CALLER: Yeah, he would take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: He said he was going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: All right. Okay. Well, he should because he really shouldn’t be having sex with you at all, period.

CALLER: But we’re in love.

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: But we’re in —

CLINIC: I really don’t think that that’s love. Hold on just a minute.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to give you Amy Cousins’ number. And you can call there. And just tell them the situation, and they’ll make arrangements for you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on just a minute. How many weeks pregnant are you? When was your last period?

CALLER: It was the first weekend in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have a pencil there?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 1-800-676-9011.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. And good luck to you.

CALLER: I wish I could talk to my mom like I can talk to you.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s easier to talk to a stranger, I know. But are you sure you can’t talk to your mom at all?

CALLER: Not at all. They don’t understand. They just don’t understand —

CLINIC: Well, if I was a mom I think I’d be upset too. See, because you’re young. You probably don’t know the circumstances, but this boy who’s so much older than you does. And he’s taking advantage of you, whether you want to know it or not. He’s just thrilled. He’s —

CALLER: Well, he’s not.

CLINIC: He’s probably bragging to his friends, “I’m going with someone who is 14.” Oh, believe me. He probably is.

CALLER: But he’s a sweetheart.

CLINIC: Well, I’m not saying that. I’m sure he’s very nice. But if he was that nice, he would be a little more mature and find someone closer to his own age. If your parents find out, they could have him thrown right in jail because that’s against the law. So keep that in mind. You know, I don’t want to preach at you. I just want to make sure you have a nice, long life and have all the opportunities available for you because there are.

CALLER: If I came in there for like a pregnancy test, do you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, no. Everything is confidential. And then we can give you — Oh, so you haven’t — what did you do, an at-home test or you had another test done?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And it came up positive?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: All right. Well, if you want to, you can make an appointment for the test, and then we can give you all the information, all the referrals and everything. That way you will know more about it then, okay?

CALLER: Is it okay if I — Like I have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off work. Is it okay if I call you back and make the appointment?

CLINIC: Sure. You sure can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want the number to Amy Cousins anyway? Just to have it on hand in case something doesn’t work out?

CALLER: Yeah. Wasn’t it the 676 number?

CLINIC: Let me see. I don’t think so. Now, wait one second. I gave you Allentown, but you have to have parental — Oh yeah, okay. 676-9011. You took that down?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. All right.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Sorry.

CLINIC: That’s all right.

CALLER: Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Everything is completely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be like all right if my boyfriend came with me?

CLINIC: Yes, it certainly would be all right. We don’t judge anybody, but I’m just telling you (laughing), confidential here, just try and rethink your situation. And if you want birth control, you can make an appointment. But first of all you need to confirm that pregnancy. Because sometimes the at-home tests can be wrong. So you need to confirm that. So talk to your boyfriend, then call us back and make an appointment.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Joan.

CALLER: Joan?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: They start at $300. They range from $300 to $400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You have to have a parental consent, honey.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way that you guys don’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. In the state of Pennsylvania it’s a law that you’re required to have parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Because — well, like my parents can’t find out at all because like — well, like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married. But like, they can’t find out because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Right. Well honey, in the state of Pennsylvania you have to have a parental consent, and that’s going to be in any state you go.

CALLER: In any state?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. So what do I do?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to talk to your parents about it, hon.

CALLER: But I can’t. They would get furious.

CLINIC: Okay. Well (laughs). That’s the best thing I can tell you. That’s what you’re going to have to do because that’s your only option really right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control or anything there?

CLINIC: We do birth control, yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell my parents about that?
