CLINIC: Women’s Medical. Angela speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs?

CLINIC: $370 providing that you’re under 12 weeks.

CALLER: How do you know if you are or not?

CLINIC: Do you know the first day of your last period?

CALLER: It was January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see. January 3. So right now you would be between 8 and 9 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you’d probably want to get in like next week or something?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let’s see. Or you could even come in this week if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. He said that he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. We wouldn’t contact your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So it’s just, the thing is, he was going to — we were talking about all this, and we decided we don’t want anyone to know about us. But if he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s completely confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We do have a record on you and everything. Like we’ll have a file, a chart, but nobody has access to it but you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And of course the staff here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, we do. Yes, we do

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet, but I’m just really scared, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you hadn’t had a pregnancy test yet, we have free pregnancy tests on a walk-in basis if you’d like to come in and take one.

CALLER: When?

CLINIC: You can come in today until 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then we’re — then you can come in tomorrow 8 to 5.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So we do it every day 8 to 5. Well, we prefer that you come in after 10:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we have our abortion sessions in the morning, and it gets really busy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s better for both of us if you won’t be waiting so long if you come after 8. But on Wednesday if you want to come in on Wednesday we don’t take any abortion patients on Wednesdays, so you can come in as early as you want on Wednesday. We open at 8:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Of course. Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not really sure. All I know is that they write the prescriptions here. You would have to probably come for initial office visit which would be $120.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And then she would write you a prescription, and then you’d — then basically you’d take it to a pharmacy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: You want to call back and make an appointment later?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Okay, thank you.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? How much does it cost?

CLINIC: If you’re going to pay out of pocket, it’s between $300 and $400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what’s the difference for?

CLINIC: It depends. You come in for a pregnancy test, and then you have to have a pre-op exam done. It depends on what kind of testing you want to have done. There’s different contributing factors. If you want to be seen here, or if you want to go to our Schenectady office and have some IV sedation.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We also help people apply for Medicaid here; that can cover it.

CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend, he can cover it. He’s 22. He can take care of it. Is there any age requirement for having an abortion?

CLINIC: No, not at all. You don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: You don’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: It’s just the problem is, my parents can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but like they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: (laughs) How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay. Nope, you can come in. You know, there’s confidential services here. You don’t need parental consent to have the surgical abortion done. What we usually need to start out with, though, is have you come in and have a pregnancy test, just so that we have the documentation on file. And you will meet with a pregnancy counselor. And they just discuss your different options with you, and they’ll talk to you about the process, and the procedure and everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to go ahead and do that, or?

CALLER: Well, can I ask you if like I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yes, you certainly can.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Alright. Well, let me call my boyfriend and see if he has any questions real quick. Is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Yup. You can call back as soon as you’re done with him, okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Nicole.

CALLER: Nicole? All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Cool. Thanks.

CLINIC: Alright. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. Can you hold?

CALLER: Well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: You need to start out with having a pregnancy test done here first.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: That’s something that the counselor would explain to you when you come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I just need to know how much to bring though.

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test itself?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Do you have insurance?

CALLER: Well no, but my boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Figure in the area of 20-$25 just to be on the safe side.

CALLER: For the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Everything here is based on a sliding scale, so I really can’t give you an exact amount until you’re actually here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: What I’m going to do is take your first name. I’ll have a counselor talk to you in a few minutes, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisha?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisa?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here for a visit?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Hold on.

(short pause)

CLINIC: (Unclear) Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I just had some questions about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. What can I do for you? I can help you in that.

CALLER: Well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Everything is confidential here. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only thing is, if you’re 14 weeks, we probably have to try to set you up in our Schenectady office.

CALLER: Well, the other lady said that I was like nine weeks.

CLINIC: Oh.

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 years old later on this month.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Okay.

CALLER: And my boyfriend’s 22, and he said that he would take care of everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying cash for everything, would he have to sign anything and have his name on any forms?

CLINIC: Let me just ask, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on.

(pause)

CLINIC: You have to have a pregnancy test appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let’s see.

CALLER: Well, I just really wanted to know if you would have to say anything to anybody about my boyfriend though.

CLINIC: I don’t know. I’m not a counselor.

CALLER: Okay. Well, who could answer that?

CLINIC: A counselor can. The only thing is they’re with a patient.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I mean, you can come in and talk about that if you want.

CALLER: Well, I didn’t want to come in if you guys would say stuff about him.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: I’m so sorry. They’re still busy with a patient. What I could do is I can make you an appointment with a counselor, to talk to her and do a pregnancy test. (Unclear) about that, and then you —

CALLER: Well, I need to know before I — I don’t want to come in without knowing.

CLINIC: Okay. Like I said —

CALLER: My friend said that you guys would have to tell.

CLINIC: Your parents? No, I don’t think so.

CALLER: Well, I’m not talking about my parents. Like I don’t want anyone to know about me and my boyfriend.

CLINIC: Okay. That I don’t know anything about. Like I said, you need to come in and talk to a counselor about that. I’m not a counselor.

CALLER: I know, but — okay. So when can I call and talk to someone?

CLINIC: If you just come in for a pregnancy test —

CALLER: But I don’t want to come in until I know the answer.

CLINIC: Okay. I don’t know if they can give you an answer until you actually have a test with them.

CALLER: Oh. So they can’t answer if they have to talk about my boyfriend until I come in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, until you come in for a pregnancy test, yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, would you guys be able to give me birth control without telling anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. We can definitely give you birth control.

CALLER: But would you ask questions about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Not on birth control I don’t think.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I don’t know. See, I’m just front desk. So the next person you talk to can give you a lot more information than I can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you think you are pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay. Is it possibility that you’ve had unprotected intercourse?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You have? Okay. I can bring you in March 11th at 11:00 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: Okay. You want to make that appointment now?

CALLER: Well, there’s no way that I could talk to someone on the phone?

CLINIC: Well, let me just see if you can talk to a counselor on the phone?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? She’s going to bring you in anyway for a visit. What’s your first name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(short pause)

CLINIC: What’s your name again?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: And your last name?

CALLER: Carter.

CLINIC: Car-ter?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you a patient with us?

CALLER: No, I haven’t ever been there.

CLINIC: You’ve never been here. Okay.

CALLER: That’s why I was wanting to ask questions first.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(short pause)

CLINIC: Hi, this is Candace (sp). I’m a pregnancy and HIV counselor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You need to come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my name was actually Lisa.

CLINIC: What is it?

CALLER: Lisa, no “A” on the front.

CLINIC: L-I-S-A, Lisa?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you have a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I didn’t know if those were right.

CLINIC: Okay, okay. So basically, what exactly is going on?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I haven’t had my period since January 3rd. And I was talking to my friend. And since like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said he would take care of everything. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Well, let me just say that all of your services here are confidential, as far as not giving information to your parents if they were to call.

CALLER: Would you have to give information to anyone else?

CLINIC: Well, there is certain information that, you know, is reportable to the state.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, there’s just certain things that have to be reported to the state if it were brought to a counselor’s attention.

CALLER: Well, like what?

(pause)

CLINIC: I don’t know. You know, nothing specifically. Why don’t you come in first, and then we’ll talk.

CALLER: But I just wanted to know this before I came in.

CLINIC: Okay, Lisa. It sounds like you need some help with what’s going on.

CALLER: Well, yeah. I’m really scared.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I just don’t want anyone to know about me and my boyfriend.

CLINIC: Oh, I understand that.

CALLER: We love each other. We’re going to get married. I mean, he just has to get finished with college, and we can’t have a kid until then. So I can’t be pregnant right now. But my friends said that you guys would have to tell my parents and tell on him.

CLINIC: Right, right. Well, that is state law. Your parents wouldn’t be contacted directly but, you know, that is something that is reportable by law.

CALLER: I’ve never heard that until you told me.

CLINIC: Okay.

(pause)

CALLER: What should I do?

CLINIC: I mean, if you are pregnant and you need help with that, you still need to come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you would get my boyfriend in trouble?

(pause)

CLINIC: Not necessarily.

CALLER: Well, how would he not be in trouble then?

CLINIC: Well, it would just — can you hold on a second?

CALLER: All right.

(pause)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Anywhere you go in the state, that’s something that’s reportable by law.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So regardless of where you go, it’s going to be something that’s going to have to be addressed. You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: So if I say anything about my boyfriend anywhere, he would have to be reported?

CLINIC: If you’re going to mention age differences, yeah.

CALLER: Okay. So what should I do then?

CLINIC: I mean, what do you want to do with the pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, I don’t want to have the baby. We can’t have a baby right now.

CLINIC: Okay, okay. That’s fine. But just know that wherever you go, you know, certain information is reportable. If you tell information to a person that you’re talking to, most people that work in this field are mandated by the state to report that information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So should I just not talk about it?

CLINIC: You are a minor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, should I just not talk about it?

CLINIC: That’s your decision.

CALLER: So because I’m a minor, I can’t get an abortion?

CLINIC: No, you can have an abortion. You’re the age of consent for that. But when you start saying things about your relationship and, you know, the age difference between you and your boyfriend, that’s something that’s reportable.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But we were all talking about it, and that’s why I wanted to know. Like he was going to pay for everything though. So how can I do this?

CLINIC: Well, you don’t have — I mean — I don’t know. I can give you some referrals to call. I mean, you’ve already told me. You know, I’m not sure as to —

CALLER: So I can’t come to you then?

CLINIC: — what the parameters are of that. You know, to be honest, you can, but I can’t promise that it wouldn’t be reported.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: So I need to go someplace else then. Well, where else should I go then?

CLINIC: Let me get some referrals for you. Can you hold on a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Somebody helping you?

CALLER: I don’t know who I was talking to, but she was gonna go get referrals.

CLINIC: Okay. And your name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Hold on. You were talking to the counselor, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

CALLER: What was her name?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: What was her name?

CLINIC: Candace.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Hold on. I didn’t know if you were just another hold.

(pause)

CLINIC: Is it possible for you to call me back in about an hour or for me to contact you so that I can get you some good referrals?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I can call you in a little while.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I just was wanting to know —

CLINIC: Give me about an hour because I do have other patients.

CALLER: Well, I was just wanting to know something else real quick.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Are the home pregnancy tests usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah, usually.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: They’re very accurate. Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I took one of those, and it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there where you’re at and get some birth control?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: It’s all depending on how much you say.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So I could come in there for birth control, and it would be all okay.

CLINIC: As long as, you know, you’re not divulging information. But you need to call me back in an hour.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Alright.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. What we can do for you here is, we can do pregnancy tests to confirm that you are pregnant – if you just did one at home or something. We can do that. The counselor would talk to you about your options. Options sometimes depend on how far along you are, where you can travel to, what kind of anesthesia you need, things like that. There’s a lot of things to talk about. We can do the examination that you would need before the termination, and we can also do the examination afterward. We just don’t do the actual abortion here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where would I go for an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, because of the things like I talked about — you know, depending on far along, what kind of anesthesia, things like that, the counselor would talk to you about all of that. It really depends on a lot of different things. Our Schenectady center is one of the places that we refer to. But we also — there’s also other places that we refer to too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so I could come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay, it’s just —

CLINIC: That’s really the first step.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would you guys have to — like I’m just scared because like I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But my friend said that since like, since I’m so young that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of all that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Um. You can come here without your parents knowing anyway. So it doesn’t matter with the boyfriend. But — so you could still come here anyway.

CALLER: Well, do you know if I could get an abortion without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes, um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t know what they would do if they — they just — I mean, my boyfriend’s a real good guy, but my parents just don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But I don’t know, I don’t understand that. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. But I don’t know. And they just can’t find out because I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But — so you’re sure that they wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Right. What we could do — I mean, the next opening I have for a pregnancy test, we could have you come in tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see when he can take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to do that then? Because we do set up appointments. Do you want to do that then, give him a call?

CALLER: Yeah. But do you know like how much it costs to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, there’s so many things. There’s a lot of things for her to talk to you about. She would go over all of that with you. The pregnancy test — all we would be doing tomorrow if you want to take the 9:00 appointment would be a pregnancy test. And that’s not very expensive. So if, you know, there’s other things for her to talk to you about. You might qualify for Medicaid if you don’t want your parents to know. There’s other things to talk about too. So.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there? It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right. We do, but you wouldn’t be down for an appointment for that. If we had time, we could — see, we have separate appointments. The pregnancy test counselor, the pregnancy counselor has her own schedule and also the clinic has their schedule. If we have time then we could set you up with birth control with the clinic, but I don’t know that they would have time tomorrow morning. It looks pretty busy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know, they wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Oh, no. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend says that it’s important that nobody finds out about us. So. I can’t let anyone know that, that we’re — I can’t let anyone know what’s going on. So. I just — he just doesn’t want me to get in trouble or anything. So I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But — so let me call him and see when is a good time for him to take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Teresa.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? Okay, you’re welcome. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. I mean good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: Do you do abortions there?

CLINIC: Okay. That’s not something we discuss over the phone.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. What we do is you’d have to come in here for a pregnancy test. And if it is positive, then the nurse will talk to you about all your options.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they have to tell my parents about this at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married and everything, but my parents hate him. And if they found out that we were having sex —

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you ever been here?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to make an appointment for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: I would have to talk to him and see when he can get off work, because he’d be the only one that could bring me.

CLINIC: Okay. So get in touch with him and give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. That’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. If like I wasn’t pregnant or anything, say like I did it wrong or whatever, would you guys be able to do birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, that would be another appointment. First you come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Just call here. I’ll answer.

CALLER: Well, how do I know it’s you instead of someone else?

CLINIC: Nobody else is here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Lana.

CALLER: Lana? All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: At this clinic?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: They do it in the Glens Falls office. Have you been to this clinic before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it came out positive.

CLINIC: Okay. And you haven’t been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just my friend told me to talk to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. The first place I would start would be coming in and talking to Beth. She’s the pregnancy counselor. And if you’re thinking about terminating, you’d have to have like a pre-surgery exam.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a certain age to have an abortion, because I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, you don’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When did you want to come in?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off because he’s going to drive me here. But you guys don’t have to tell my parents or anything, right?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just the problem is, I can’t tell my parents, because my boyfriend is 22. And we’re gonna get married, but my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But there’s just no way that they can find out.

CLINIC: Now, do you have insurance or not?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you a New York State resident or Vermont?

CALLER: I live in Hartford.

CLINIC: Hartford? Okay. Okay. Just get back to me when you decide what you want to do.

CALLER: Well, if I end up not being pregnant, could you guys get birth control for me?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay like if I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Like just in case my boyfriend has a question or something.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Barb.

CALLER: Barb?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
