CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You have to come for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was just wondering about abortions.

CLINIC: Okay. We do abortions here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost, I guess?

CLINIC: If you’re under 12 weeks, it’s $350.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know —

CLINIC: How do you go about doing it?

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period. When was your last period?

CALLER: Well, I guess — it was probably around like maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. What town do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Whiting (sp).

CLINIC: In where?

CALLER: Whiting (sp).

CLINIC: Wooding (ph)?

CALLER: Whiting, yeah.

CLINIC: Where’s that?

CALLER: Well it’s in — it’s in the middle.

CLINIC: Are you in New Jersey?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What town is it?

CALLER: Whiting.

CLINIC: Whiting. Oh, down by Fort Dix?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh. Oh, okay. So you’re about an hour-and-a-half from us. Do you want to go to Planned Parenthood in South Jersey?

CALLER: No, I really want to go just someplace where no one will see me.

CLINIC: Okay. So you need to come up here and speak to a counselor. You need to come in two visits.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So when do you want to come?

CALLER: Oh, well I don’t know. I have to talk to my boyfriend to see. But — it’s just —

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t have a lot of time to play with. So you need to come up as soon as possible. So call your boyfriend and see when he can bring you up here.

CALLER: It’s just — the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all, because —

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: — he’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married. But like my parents absolutely hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But there’s just no way that they can find out that we’re having sex.

CLINIC: Okay. So how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. So you need to talk to your boyfriend about bringing you up here, okay?

CALLER: Okay. And no one would tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: You need to give us a call back; get your boyfriend to bring you up here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Why don’t you get a hold of him and give us a call back.

CALLER: Well, I won’t be able to talk to him until like after 5:00 when he gets off. But there would be no way that anybody would know at all?

CLINIC: You should give us a call tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anyone to find out.

CLINIC: No. You can have an abortion in New Jersey up to 12 — you can have an abortion without parental consent or knowledge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: If I ended up not being pregnant, would there be any way you guys could give us birth control?

CLINIC: Well, I would probably send you to another center because you’re so far from us.

CALLER: Yeah. But would I like be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: You could.

CALLER: Yeah? And no one would find out about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, can I talk to you next time I call?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Lauren.

CALLER: Lauren?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: GYN Choices.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far are you?

CALLER: I don’t know. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. By your date, you’re a little bit over nine weeks. That’s going to be 350.

CALLER: Okay. Well the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No, no, that’s not true. That’s not true.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. He could just take care of it, right?

CLINIC: No, that’s irrelevant. You could come in here by yourself. That’s irrelevant. And it’s a patient-doctor confidentiality. So even if your mom had found out and called here and wanted to verify that you were here, we wouldn’t be able to tell her anything without your consent.

CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and we don’t want anyone to know about him and me. Would he have to fill out any forms or anything if he was paying?

CLINIC: No, you. You would. There’s a form when you first come that you’ve got to fill out.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And it has like your last name, your first name, your middle name, sex, birth date, age, race, address, your home phone number, marital status, whether you’re employed. It’s just a little — do you know about your medical history like in your family?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. As long as you know that, you’re fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So his name wouldn’t be on anything?

CLINIC: No. As long as you have the money and yourself, you’re fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You don’t have to worry about anybody else besides you and your boyfriend knowing about it. Anybody else who knows will be somebody ya’ll tell.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: (chuckles)

CALLER: Well, do you do the pregnancy test beforehand? Because I really haven’t had one of those yet.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: That’s included. That’s free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about this anymore.

CLINIC: Um, yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: On the amount of time that you’re late, I think it’s more probable that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But we do an ultra sound and all that. They give you pills and everything.

CALLER: Okay. So you’re sure that nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend, and you wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: Positive. You wouldn’t have been the first. Don’t worry about it. If that makes you feel any better.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Alright. When do you guys have appointments?

CLINIC: I could give you an appointment for Saturday.

CALLER: What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: 8 a.m.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see if he can take me. But can I call him and call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Neika (ph).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Alright. What’s your name?

CALLER: Lisa?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisa?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: L-i-s-a?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: All right. I just wrote it down so I know what you’re talking about.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Alright. So I’ll call you back.

CLINIC: All right.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know —

CLINIC: Not on this site. We just give you a referral somewhere to another Planned Parenthood, or we can give you a referral somewhere else – whatever suits you best. There’s like a whole explaining process on how each clinic works, and how they work, and how the anesthetic is done. So whatever you think is best for yourself. So you would have to come in. Schedule an appointment first, come in, get a pregnancy test done. If it comes back positive, then we’ll give you a referral somewhere else. And we’ll counsel you on what you’re going to do or what you should do, I don’t know.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a few questions?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: Can I ask you a question or two?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can ask me questions.

CALLER: Well, my main question is, like, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Everything that’s said and done here is confidential, and you do not need your parents’ consent to get an abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just that my parents can’t find out at all because my boyfriend’s 22. And we want to get married, but they hate him because he’s just so old. Well, they just think he’s old.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Like, I don’t understand why they — but I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. You think what’s best for you. Whatever you want to do. You can either call and make an appointment with us, and we’ll schedule you to get a pregnancy test done here.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: Nobody knows, honey. Nobody has to know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And when you go to get the abortion done, you can go with a friend, or even with him you can go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. You have rights here, like everybody else. Everything that’s done here, we don’t need your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. Like if it ends up that I’m not pregnant or whatever —

CLINIC: You can get on birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No one would have to know about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to set an appointment?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend, and then call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Call your boyfriend, discuss it with him, and then call me back.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris (sp).

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris.

CALLER: Demaris?

CLINIC: Yes, Demaris.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, sweetie?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

Please hold. I’m transferring you know.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. You have to have had a positive pregnancy test. You have to be between 7 and 12 weeks pregnant. It’s anywhere from 350 to $450. And we only put people under our local anesthesia, which means that you are awake during the procedure. There’s two appointments. First is your health history appointment over the phone, and that person will schedule you for the appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Okay. It’s just I can’t tell my parents because like my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but like my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But like —

CLINIC: Fine. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. You don’t think he’s too old for me or anything?

CLINIC: That’s — (chuckles) That’s not my place to say anything.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But as far as patients having abortions here, we’re not permitted to give out any information to anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do know if there’s like an age limit for having an abortion?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Cause like —

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: All right. Well, you’re too young for here. Because as far as we consider, patients that are 14 or younger, we send them to a place to be put to sleep because it’s a local anesthesia.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? And we don’t think that’s a good idea for patients that young.

CALLER: You don’t think that other people won’t tell?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: The other people won’t —

CLINIC: No one should tell.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I can give you a phone number for Princeton Women’s Center, and that’s on Route 1 in Princeton. And they put patients to sleep. Do you want that phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, please.

(pause)

CLINIC: That phone number is 609-514-9191.

CALLER: 514-9191?

CLINIC: Mm-hmm.

CALLER: All right. Well, if like it turns out that I’m not pregnant, is it okay if I come to you guys for birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah? And you still wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No. We’re not permitted to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it cool if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: If you want to talk to someone about — what do you want to talk to us about, your different options and things like that?

CALLER: Well, like if my boyfriend has questions, is it okay if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Well, we have a community services department. And we have counselors there, and they can talk to you.

CALLER: Oh. But I like you. You’re nice.

CLINIC: They’re much nicer than me. (laughs)

CALLER: But you’re nice.

CLINIC: I know. But that’s what they’re here for, okay?

CALLER: Oh. But —

CLINIC: Okay? They’re here to talk to you about sexuality and preventive measures.

CALLER: But I really don’t want to talk to like a whole bunch of people.

CLINIC: No, they’ll just give you one person to talk to. They’re educators, and that’s why they’re here. So if you wanted to talk to someone, you should — if you want to call back, you should call community services.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know, call the same number you called and ask for community services. And I think you should ask for Violet Sawyer.

CALLER: Violet?

CLINIC: Yes. She runs that department. And she’d be able to, you know, give you either someone in that department or she would talk to you.

CALLER: Okay. Could you switch me to her right now?

CLINIC: I’ll see if she’s available. I’m not sure she’s in today. Hold on, please. Let me check.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t get your name.

CALLER: Oh, I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? Alright Christine, I’m going to give you to Michele. And she’s in community services. And I gave her a little bit of information that you gave me.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And she’ll be able to talk to you, so hang on.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hi, Christine.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Hi, my name is Michele Giagano (ph) and I’m one of the pregnancy option counselors here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You were speaking to a woman named Sharon. She gave me a little bit of background information, that you were currently pregnant, and you were having difficulties coming to a choice.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, me and my boyfriend talked about it, and we’re wanting to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. So you had made your choice.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So what was the reasoning, I guess, behind the call?

CALLER: Like my friend told me that you guys have to tell about like me and my boyfriend, and my parents have to find out and everything. And like they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Well, how old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. We don’t notify the parents.

CALLER: Okay. Like she said that you guys would have to find out that he’s like 22 —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — and they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: You know, as long as you had the financial ability to provide yourself —

CALLER: Yeah, he said he would pay cash for it.

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re not going to notify your parents. I mean, that’s Planned Parenthood’s thing. We don’t need parental consent, and we don’t notify anybody. We just communicate with the person who’s getting the services.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you wanted to call and schedule that, you can call on Friday between 9 and 12.

CALLER: Okay. Is it cool if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it’s not me. The person that you’d be calling to schedule the termination, her name is Julie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you can call then and tell her that you want to schedule the termination of the pregnancy. And then she’ll ask you some questions, a little bit of a pre-screening they do. It’s just kind of to know about you and, you know, whether or not you would be a fit for here. And if not, they will refer you somewhere else.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have our number, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, great.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

Do you think he’s too old for me or anything?

CLINIC: I think it’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to find out anything?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last menstruation?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. The fee would be $350. And we do procedures on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know– It’s just I’m kind of scared because like, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —

CLINIC: You’re 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: You’re 13. Okay. Hold on a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. You do need somebody, a relative, but that has to be over the age of 18.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just be there?

CLINIC: Well, your boyfriend is 22?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Well, he’ll be in the waiting room.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just he was going to pay cash for everything, so —

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: — that’s why he would have to be here. But would there be any other fees?

CLINIC: No, that’s it, $350 except the medication afterwards.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I could give you an appointment for Thursday or for Saturday. What day do you want?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see, but do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had one yet. But —

CLINIC: Okay. You haven’t done a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no. But I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since January 3. So I’m really worried.

CLINIC: Right. So just go to the pharmacy and get one of those, you know, pregnancy testing.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yes. Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Unless you want to come here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? It’s $5 charge.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yes, dear. Yes.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: Yeah, you would have to wait two weeks for birth control pills and all that. Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to get birth control?

CLINIC: Okay, the initial visit would be $30, but then afterwards it would be $70, depending on, you know, what you want.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. That’s confidential.
