RECORDING: You’re calling Planned Parenthood. Our address is 1295 Broadway, Suite 201. Please hold during the silence. (Spanish interpretation) (long pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. You need to call the Mission Valley or Ensenita’s Office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Their phone number is 683-7538.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion?

CLINIC: No, they don’t.

CALLER: Okay. Because like, well like I’ll be 14 in March and that’s still okay?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just like my parents can’t find out at all because my boyfriend is 22, and we’re planning on getting married, but they think he’s too old for me, so they just can’t find out.

CLINIC: No, it’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Do you know like — do you guys do like birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do. If you want to come in after your termination, or they can actually give you pills at your termination.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I went to you guys for that?

CLINIC: Well you need, if you’re pregnant then we can’t see you until you — if you still want to get the abortion you need to get that done. We don’t do them here. They do them only at Mission Valley or Ensenita (sp).

CALLER: Do they do like a pregnancy test where you’re at?

CLINIC: Yeah, they do. If you want to come in for a pregnancy test, you can come in today at 3:00.

CALLER: At 3:00? Well, I’d have to call him and see if I can. Like he’d have to take me, so I’d have to see if he, when he could get the time off work.

CLINIC: Okay. We start at 3:00.

CALLER: But nobody has to know there?

CLINIC: It’s all confidential. We start at 3:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if like I talked to my boyfriend and he had a question, is it all right if I call you back and ask you?

CLINIC: Yeah. No problem.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Diana.

CALLER: Diana? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’m Christine.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Concord Planned Parenthood. This is Jason.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much do those cost?

CLINIC: It depends how far along you are. Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: No? When was your last period?

CALLER: Well, it was December 21st.

CLINIC: December 21st?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) All right. You’d be about 9 1/2 weeks right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So our starting fees are usually about $345.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have any sort of medical coverage or —

CALLER: Well, no, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. So we normally tell people it’s $345, and then to bring like an extra $80 for extra medications that you may need because we do give you Motrin and Valium if you choose to take Valium. If you have the Valium you do need a ride home.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just worried because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parent. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure about all that. Would you want to talk to somebody about that?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.

CALLER: Yeah, hi.

CLINIC: Hi. Are you wanting to make an appointment for an abortion?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I was just wondering if like — well, I’m just — I was asking Jason if it’s just my friend told me that if I’m going to — like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Right. Let me check okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, I’m going to find out for you. Can you give me your name and your number and I’ll call you back?

CALLER: Well, I’m at my friend’s house, and her mom’s here, and if you called she would answer the phone, and I would get in trouble.

CLINIC: Oh. You have a cell phone or anything?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then do you want to call me back?

CALLER: All right. What’s your name?

CLINIC: Arthie (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Give me an hour.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

(phone clicks)

(dial sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Cindy. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Can I talk to Arthie, please?

CLINIC: Sure. Who’s calling?

CALLER: This is Christine.

CLINIC: Hold on.

CLINIC: Hi, this is Arthie.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was the one that you told to call back in an hour. I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on? I’m just finishing up with one call. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hi. Okay, do you want me to make you an appointment?

CALLER: Well, you told me you were going to have to tell me about my boyfriend, so.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. I mean, you don’t need anybody to come in to have your — to have an abortion done. You don’t need permission from anyone.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But is it all right if he comes in with me though?

CLINIC: If he comes into the room with you?

CALLER: Well, like if he’s there. Like if he brings me.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, that’s fine. I mean, it’s none of our — we don’t, you know, tell you who to bring and who not to bring.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just, I don’t want anybody to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything if he was here?

CLINIC: No. He has nothing to do with it. This is a procedure that has just to do with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nobody else.

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in —

CALLER: I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and —

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to come in today and take a pregnancy test first?

CALLER: What time are you guys open until?

CLINIC: We’re open until 8:00. You can come here until 6:00, and I can run a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but probably.

CLINIC: Okay. I think that would be really advisable for you to do today, and then we can schedule an appointment while you’re here.

CALLER: Okay, well, how soon would I be able to get birth control if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Tomorrow.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. But I want you to come in today for your test first.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What time should I come then?

CLINIC: Any time before 6:00.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. It’s totally private.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, so will you come in today?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood of Costa Mesa. (dial sound)

One moment, please. (ring)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: They’re not done here. They’re done at the Orange office. Did you confirm a pregnancy?

CALLER: No. I’m just scared because like my last period was December 14. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. You should come in and confirm the pregnancy first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because they’ll give you a pregnancy test, and we have walk-in hours. You can try coming in on Monday. They start at 10:30. That’s the best time to come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what all I need to do that?

CLINIC: Well, you need to come in and confirm the pregnancy test, and if you’re positive we’ll give you your options. If you want to go for that, we could set up the appointment with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my friend told me — I’m just scared because like my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my friend, my boyfriend’s 22. Can he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Basically it’s confidential here, and in Planned Parenthood the only thing if your boyfriend’s 18 years or over I’m not sure if they have to report it or not. It depends on you.

CALLER: What would they have to report?

CLINIC: Because he’s overage and you’re 14.

CALLER: Well, who would they report it to?

CLINIC: To the police.

CALLER: For?

CLINIC: Because it’s kind of I think the age, the age difference. It’s kind of way far out.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So they look at it as — I wouldn’t say like a rape incident but they kind of take it as a child abuse because you’re under 18.

CALLER: Well, what do I do? I mean, what could happen to him?

CLINIC: Well, it just depends, like I said. I’m not sure what they do. Let me ask. Hold on. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, basically it would be reported by law because it’s a law when you’re 18 years and under, and he’s older than you.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then? I mean, I don’t want him to get in trouble. I mean —

CLINIC: Yeah, when you come in you don’t have to say anything. So.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. But you need to confirm it first. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: And we’ll give your options.

CALLER: So I shouldn’t bring him with me?

CLINIC: No. Well, it’s up to you, whatever you say here with us and everything, but you could confirm it.

CALLER: Confirm the pregnancy?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test there said that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control? I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah. We could start you up on that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But does anybody have to know that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You could just come in as you’re coming in for birth control, and then we’ll run a pregnancy test on you since you haven’t had your period.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared, and I have a lot of questions. If I could think of anything else, can I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: Gloria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. This is Elizabeth. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: What’s the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: So you’re in the first trimester, so it would be $350.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m kind of worried because like I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is?

CLINIC: No. That’s why we have to report it because you’re underage and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Who do you have to report it to?

CLINIC: We have to report it to the authorities.

CALLER: Oh. Well, well, what could happen?

CLINIC: They’ll contact your family.

CALLER: Well, they can’t tell my parents. I mean —

CLINIC: But honey, we have to. You’re only 13. He’s 22.

CALLER: So there’s nothing I can do?

CLINIC: No, unless you talk to your parents first.

CALLER: But I can’t talk to my parents. I mean, if they — they know my boyfriend. They just —

CLINIC: But it’s a state law, sweetie, and we can’t go against that.

CALLER: But I just — okay. Well, could I come in for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Cypress.

CLINIC: In Cypress? So you’re calling the Cypress phone number?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. They’re no longer open. We’re in Long Beach.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So we’re probably closest to you, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, you can come in for a free pregnancy test.

CALLER: Would you have to report it then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you take a home test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Why don’t you do that?

CALLER: Well, I didn’t know that they were right.

CLINIC: Yeah. They’re pretty accurate as long as you follow the instructions. Why are you dating a 22-year-old guy at 13?

CALLER: Well, I mean, he’s a sweetheart. I don’t —

CLINIC: Yeah? But unfortunately with you only being 13 we have to report it.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I can’t help you with that one. I mean, we just have laws that we have to go by.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment for a pap smear. Those are $80. Or I can give you the number to Memorial Women’s Center that’s in Long Beach.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: They go on a sliding scale. Their phone number is 933-2998.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So all right.

CLINIC: I’m sorry. I know. I understand that you’ve got family situations and everything, but unfortunately, like I said, it’s a state law.

CALLER: Okay. Well, but if I wasn’t pregnant you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, because there’s no reason. There’s nothing to report.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty. We’re open from 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday for the pregnancy testing and 8 to 1 on Saturday.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.
