RECORDING: Welcome to Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood. Please choose from the following four menu options. For directions to the Bellingham Clinic, for Bellingham Clinic hours, press 1 now. For test results of tests performed only at the Bellingham clinic, press 2 now. To make or change an appointment at any of our clinics or to speak with a staff-person press 3 now. (dial sound) Please hold on while I try that extension.
CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: We don’t actually do them here at this clinic. We do pretermination services. So if you wanted to have an abortion, we could do the pre-exam for you. But they’re done over at our (unclear) clinic, now Baker Family Medicine.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so I would come there for like a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: A pregnancy test, but there’s a full exam that happens before you have an ab — a termination of pregnancy. Pelvic exam to see how far along you are, a couple of STD screenings, and then there’s just a lot of information as well.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know — It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: It doesn’t matter that you’re only 13. You can do this under your own steam in Washington if you’re only 13.
CALLER: Oh, really?
CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, so he doesn’t have to sign anything for you. You’re welcome to bring him with you of course, but. But, no, he doesn’t — because he’s not legally responsible for you because he’s not your parent. But you can be legally responsible for yourself for this healthcare situation.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We’d sure encourage you to talk to your parents about it if you feel that you can, if you feel that you can —
CALLER: Well, no.
CLINIC: Okay. But yeah, you’re welcome to come and see us by yourself if you want to, or with your boyfriend, or with a friend, whoever.
CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just the main reason why I’m wondering about all this is because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m just really scared.
CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Have you had regular periods up to then?
CALLER: Usually, yeah.
CLINIC: When did you start having your period? How old were you when you started having your period?
CALLER: Well, I was 12.
CLINIC: So the first thing to do would be to take a pregnancy test. And I can actually tell you a place where we do that for free, and you don’t have to have an appointment.
CALLER: Really? Where?
CLINIC: Do you know where the DSHS office is, Department of Social and Health Services?
CALLER: Well, I live in Ferndale. I’m not real sure where that is.
CLINIC: Okay. Well, I can tell you that it’s — let’s see. Well, you’re not old enough to drive yet. So it’s in Bellingham. It’s in the same shopping complex where Christ the King Church and Cost Cutter are.
CALLER: Oh, okay. I know where that is.
CLINIC: Does that sound familiar?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: In that same complex there’s a kind of a light brown brick building, and that’s the Department of Social and Health Services, DSHS, and we have a nurse practitioner there every weekday between 8:30 and 4:30.
CALLER: What’s her name?
CLINIC: Her name is Sylvia.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And she’s just there — it’s easy to find her. You just walk in the door and you can see her. I think she’s off to the right.
CALLER: Okay. But would she have to tell anybody about anything?
CLINIC: Nope. This is completely confidential. She’s not obligated to tell anyone about what’s going on, and you’re not obligated to tell anyone about what’s going on. There’s no judges or courts or parental notification, nothing like that in Washington.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. In Washington, you’re completely free to take care of you reproductive health needs as soon as you’re 13.
CALLER: Okay. Well, so my boyfriend can just drive me there and they would be able to do the pregnancy test and you wouldn’t —
CLINIC: Uh-huh. They could do the pregnancy test, and they could — and she can talk to you about, you know, if you’re pregnant, the various options that you have, and if you’re not pregnant why this might be going on and maybe to help you get started on a birth control method of some kind – if you’d like to do that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And she’ll have lots of information for you, and she’ll have information for your boyfriend too if you want to bring him along.
CALLER: So I could get birth control there and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?
CLINIC: Yep. Nope. We don’t have to tell anybody. She can only do a couple of months. You’d need to come back here to get an exam to get more months of birth control, but she’s a good place to get started because it’s quick and you don’t have to wait for an appointment.
CALLER: Oh. It’s just, I don’t drive. Would he be able to pick up the pills after everything like to come there and pick up the other pills?
CLINIC: Uh-huh.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Yeah, because you can put him on your list of people that are approved to pick up pills.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: And he could pick them up for you.
CALLER: All right. Well, I just have so many questions. I mean, I can’t think of them all right now. But if I thought of one, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?
CLINIC: Yeah. My name is Becky.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. You’re very welcome to talk to me.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: And you know what you could even do? I could give you Sylvia’s phone number right now.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Because she’s the nurse practitioner, and she has a lot of information about birth control, a lot more than I do.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So let me see. Her phone number is 714-4051. So you can talk to me if you feel comfortable, but if I have questions that I can’t answer I’ll give you a medical staff-person and they can — they’re also very helpful.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: They have lots of information too.
CALLER: But you’re just sure that no one has to know anything about this?
CLINIC: Yep. I’m absolutely sure. Quite a few very young women of ages 13 and 14 do come and see us, and we’re absolutely confidential. We — nobody is allowed legally to talk to someone after that age unless you’ve specified that it’s okay. It’s not like going to a pediatrician’s office. It’s different, because this is an adult concern.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: So you’re treated as an adult in the state of Washington.
CALLER: All right.
CLINIC: All right?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: I’ll talk to you later.
CALLER: Okay, thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye.

(ringing 1X)
CLINIC: Bremerton Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: Based on your income.
CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 next month. And I don’t have a job.
CLINIC: Okay. So if you don’t have any income, it’s $347.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just worried because like my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody? Because he said he was actually going to take, like pay for everything, so.
CLINIC: Actually when you divulge that information, when you willingly divulge that kind of information, then yes we do a report.
CALLER: What? What do you mean?
CLINIC: Well you’re telling us that you are underage and that you have a boyfriend that’s older than you.
CALLER: Oh. So what should I do then?
CLINIC: Well, I guess you have a couple of different options.
CALLER: Like what?
CLINIC: I’m going to put you on hold for just a second, okay?
CALLER: All right.
(pause)
CLINIC: Hi.
CALLER: Hi.
CLINIC: What you need to do is — because once you disclose to us — we don’t know your name or anything.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But once you disclose to us we do have to report. So what you need to do is call back on another day and don’t disclose that information to us because by law we have to report it, okay?
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: So you don’t have to tell us how old your boyfriend is. We don’t care. If it’s consensual sex, we don’t care. So you just need to pretend like you didn’t call today.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, could I ask you real quick? Like I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26th, and I’m scared.
CLINIC: Okay. Have you had a pregnancy test yet?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Okay. So you need to come in for a free pregnancy test. Can you come tomorrow?
CALLER: I think so.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: I have to call my boyfriend to see, but, yeah.
CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, so what you want to do is, you know, is to not disclose the information about that.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And we won’t ask you.
CALLER: The thing is, I can’t drive, and he’d be the only way I could get there. What should I do?
CLINIC: Hmm. Well, that’s a little tougher because, you know, in this state of Washington it’s illegal for him to be having sex with you. You understand that, don’t you?
CALLER: Well, no. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.
CLINIC: Okay. Okay. Well, the unfortunate thing is in this state that’s how the law works. You know what I’m saying?
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Yeah. So that makes it a little tougher because it’s not just Planned Parenthood that has to report. It’s everywhere.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: So it wouldn’t matter where you went.
CALLER: Well, would it be better if he just didn’t — like if he dropped me off?
CLINIC: Yep. Yep. If he just didn’t come.
CALLER: Oh. Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So you wouldn’t need him to sign anything? Like he said he was going to pay for everything, but would he have to sign for anything if he was paying for it?
CLINIC: Well, if he pays cash he could just give you the money.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much would it be? You said the pregnancy test didn’t cost anything?
CLINIC: No. So just come in for that, and then we can kind of help.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: But —
CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?
CLINIC: Yes, you could.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this again, so.
CLINIC: Right. No, I understand. I totally understand.
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No. You can be on birth control confidentially.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: But you don’t want to disclose your boyfriend’s age at that point either because it doesn’t matter where you go; if your boyfriend is more than six years older than you are it is against the law in this state.
CALLER: Oh.
CLINIC: If you’re underage. So I’m just giving you that heads up.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So it wouldn’t matter where you went, if they knew how old he was it would have to be reported to CPS.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Well, I just have so many questions.
CLINIC: I know.
CALLER: If I thought of anything else, could I call and talk to you? What’s your name?
CLINIC: My name is Sherry.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Centralia Planned Parenthood. This is Linda. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we do not. There isn’t a facility in Lewis County. The closest would be Olympia.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?
CLINIC: Yes. Can you hold for a moment?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Thanks.
(pause)
CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. One place is Eastside Women’s Health. And are you calling long distance to Olympia?
CALLER: No, I’m from Oakville.
CLINIC: Okay. It’s 367-943-5127. I have an 888 number if you were long distance. And the other location in Olympia is Sound Choice Health Center. And that is 360-456-0291.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? And you call each of them, and they can give you information on what their services are and their prices, et cetera.
CALLER: Like I’m just kind of worried, ’cause like I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?
CLINIC: You’ll need to go over that with them.
CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, it’s just the main reason why I’m worried about all this is ’cause like my last period was like December 26th, and I’m just scared.
CLINIC: And you said you’re 14?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 9th.
CLINIC: Okay. I would give that information to both of those facilities and see what their rules are.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see though?
CLINIC: To confirm if you are?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Have you gotten a positive pregnancy test?
CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since like the day after Christmas.
CLINIC: Yes, you can. This afternoon we’ll be testing between 12:30 and 3:30. And what we will do is, if you are, we’ll set the time based on when your last period was.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test though?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Oh, all right.
CLINIC: No, not at all.
CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?
CLINIC: It’s free.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?
CLINIC: We could make you an appointment to get your started on birth control. You bet.
CALLER: Well, would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: No. There’s the steps that you could carry through on confidentiality.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just the only thing is I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?
CLINIC: Yes. You could make him the person that could pick up your pills for you.
CALLER: Okay. Would you have to say anything about him?
CLINIC: No. If you go under the confidentiality we should be okay.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: This afternoon between 12:30 and 3:30.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye bye.
CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: We do not.
CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?
CLINIC: Yes, but I can’t give that information out over the phone.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: You would need to come in.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — Like I’m just really worried because like I can’t tell my parents at all. Because like I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend said that I would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could I just have him sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell my parents?
CLINIC: That’s correct.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: What we need to do is do a pregnancy test, because you have to have proof of pregnancy.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So —
CALLER: How much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: It’s not going to. I just need to find a place to put you.
CALLER: Oh. Well, my last period was like January 3rd. Do you think that there would be any way that I wasn’t pregnant?
CLINIC: Oh, there’s always the chance. Were you using birth control?
CALLER: No.
CLINIC: Let’s see.
CALLER: Well, if I came in there for a pregnancy test, would I be able to — Say that I wasn’t pregnant. Would I be able to get birth control there too?
CLINIC: Yes.
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Really?
CLINIC: Nope, nope. I’m just trying to find an appointment date.
CALLER: Okay. But nobody has to know about my boyfriend either?
CLINIC: Nope.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my friend said you guys would have to tell.
CLINIC: You know what? No. When you come in don’t tell me about your boyfriend.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: If you tell me, then yes we have to report it because of the age.
CALLER: But he was going to pay for everything.
CLINIC: There probably isn’t any cost.
CALLER: Oh, okay.
CLINIC: Okay? So when you come in the best thing for you to do is just not tell me or anyone here. If you do say that and it does get recorded, then yes we do have to report that because of the age. Okay?
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay. So my problem is that I am just so full this week. Can you come at 9:15 tomorrow morning?
CALLER: I have to call my boyfriend and see. Is it okay if I call and call you back? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Patrick.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And we are gone for lunch here in a minute, between 12:30 and 1:30. Okay? So give me a call after 1:30.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: Thank you.
