CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, we have a scale, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s according to your income. It will run from 375 to 440.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just I don’t have a job. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of all this, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: It’s confidential, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to have an appointment to come in for consultation and so forth?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in for that?

CLINIC: You have to come in, and they’ll talk to you, and you go from there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m going to send you to the appointment desk, and she’s going to set up an appointment for you to come in to talk, okay?

CALLER: Well, would you guys be able to do a pregnancy test there before all of this?

CLINIC: They’ll have to do all of that. They can’t just do it — yes. They’ll be able to take care of you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control too?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No, they won’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. He said he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: When you make your appointment, any questions you have to ask, that’s when you ask all of those type of questions, okay?

CALLER: Okay. So who are you now?

CLINIC: I’m going to send you to the appointment desk, and tell them you want to make an appointment for a pregnancy test and so forth to find out if you would need to have an abortion, and if not, for you to have birth control pills.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Cecile (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I’m going to send you over to, I believe, Gloria.

CALLER: Gloria?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Alright? You tell her what I just told you. You want to have an examination, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: An appointment for an examination and pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

RECORDING: If you are a teen that lives in Albany, you may be eligible for free, low-cost healthcare services, including —

CLINIC: Albany, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Is this Gloria?

CLINIC: Yes, it is.

CALLER: Oh, hi. Cecile told me to talk to you. But I was calling to see about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. Now who told you to talk to me?

CALLER: Cecile.

CLINIC: Okay. Alright. Now you’re calling about what?

CALLER: Getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just she said that I would have to get a pregnancy test first.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. That is correct.

CALLER: But I have a question though. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. He said he would take care of everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: He’s going to take care of the payment?

CALLER: Right, yeah. He said that he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, there’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, you’re going to be 14 this month?

CALLER: Right. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: So you’re 13 now?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, have you been confirmed pregnant? Oh, you said you haven’t. Okay, now here’s what you’re going to need to do. You’re going to need to come in for a pregnancy test. Now, the soonest available appointment that we have is going to be March 25th. Now, here are the things that you can do. Alright, when was your last menstrual period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. So you’re probably are around eight weeks. Because, see, we will do this procedure up to 12 weeks.

CALLER: Oh, it was January 3rd.

CLINIC: What you can do is you can come in either Saturday morning or Tuesday morning.

CALLER: Okay. What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: 8:30. Okay? They take the first ten women. He’s going to be looking at $35 for the first visit. And the cost of the procedure itself is going to be $375.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now we don’t have any scheduled appointments until — it’s going to be Friday the 22nd. I can schedule you for Friday the 22nd for what we have, or you can come in this Saturday or next Tuesday —

CALLER: Is that for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, for the pregnancy test. What you’re having is called the options review. In other words, you already know what you want to do.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: So they’ll set up an appointment for you to have the procedure. Actually, the sooner you get in, the better.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: Sure you could.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Alright.

CALLER: It’s just the most important thing is that nobody knows about me and my boyfriend and my parents don’t find out, so.

CLINIC: Okay, okay. Alright then —

CALLER: So you’re sure that nobody would have to know anything?

CLINIC: No. No one will know. We are confidential. I mean, you are the patient, and we do not disclose information about you to anyone. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Alright. So you need to come in. If you can’t get in this Saturday morning, come in Tuesday morning at 8:30 or get in next Saturday morning at 8:30. The sooner you get in here, the better. In the event that you are not pregnant, what they’ll do — you can tell them that you want to come in for birth control, and you want to have an exam, and they’ll set up an appointment for you to come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. So you’re going to come in either Saturday or Tuesday morning.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. So tell him how much it’s going to be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Alright.

CALLER: Well, who were you again?

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Gloria, but I am just the appointment person. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys have to tell my parents about anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Cause like, well, I just can’t tell my parents. Cause like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married. But they think he’s too old for me. And there’s just —

CLINIC: Oh, I see. Okay. Can you hold on for just a minute?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: Thank you.

(pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. Okay. And what’s your name?

CALLER: My name is Christine.

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to set up an appointment?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re a confidential agency, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It is expensive.

CALLER: Okay.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Just to let you know up front.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But we can do referrals and stuff for you like that, you know, after the pregnancy test.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only thing we can’t control is who sees you come in here, okay? You know what I mean?

CLINIC: But your first step would be to find out whether you’re pregnant or not. Okay?

CALLER: So like if my boyfriend had questions, is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure, no problem.

CALLER: And what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Becky.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood Riverhead. This is Agottie.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Hold on one moment.

RECORDING: — 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lock-in hours are available. There are 13 Planned Parenthood centers in Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties. You can call 1-800-230-PLAN to be connected directly to the center nearest you. You can also visit our Web site at www.plannedparenthood.org. Our clients count on our caring staff for annual check-ups, birth control information, family planning supplies, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and HIV, pregnancy testing and options counseling, mid-life services and emergency contraception. Abortion services are available at our Smithtown Medical Center. In addition to surgical abortion services, we offer Mifepristone, formerly known as RU486, as a medical abortion option. Services are confidential for clients of all ages. In order to ensure that our clients receive the highest quality confidential services, we request that all clients and visitors present photo id’s when entering our facilities. Thank you for choosing us as your healthcare provider.

Planned Parenthood fees are on a sliding fee scale based on income and family size. Special consideration is made regarding the income for teens 17 and under. Testing and counseling for HIV are always free to our established clients. We accept Medicaid, major credit cards and several health insurance plans. For more information, please, just ask.

Good news for Medicaid participants. New York State law says that you can come to Planned Parenthood for family planning services, no matter which Medicaid managed care plan you choose. If you had unprotected sex, you still have 72 hours to prevent an unintended pregnancy. Please request more information on emergency contraception when we return to the line. Prenatal care is now available at our Huntington, Patchogue, Midtown and Riverhead medical centers. Planned Parenthood offers many community workshops. Topics include sexuality, parenting concerns, puberty awareness, and managing mid-life.

CLINIC: Hello. Hi. Sorry about the hold. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not in Riverhead. We do them in Smithtown.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test with Planned Parenthood yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Because that’s the first step, that we take a pregnancy test to confirm that you’re pregnant. And we do options counseling. And if you choose to terminate, then we send you to Smithtown.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a certain age for that?

CLINIC: Nope. There’s no age restriction here. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: The problem is, I can’t tell my parents cause like my boyfriend’s he’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything. But like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So like, I don’t know. They just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: If they find out, it’s not from us. It would be from you or your boyfriend.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No, no one at all. If your mom called us and said, when is my daughter’s appointment, we wouldn’t even admit that you are a patient here.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay? We would say, we don’t know. We don’t know who she is. We just say we don’t give out any information on any patients over the phone.

CALLER: Like say I wasn’t pregnant. Is there any way you guys could do birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. We could get you started on the pill or any other method that you wanted. You know, we’ll explain to you all the different methods, and you can pick one that’s right for you.

CALLER: Is it all right if like my boyfriend comes and picks up the pills?

CLINIC: You have to give us a letter saying it’s okay. But the first visit we need to see you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you want to come in and have a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to him. Is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Agotti.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Alright. Great.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No we don’t.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Not at this site, but a couple of our clinics do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you know like the phone number for them?

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hang on a minute?

CALLER: Yeah.

(pause)

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, I took one over the weekend like that I got at the store. It said it was positive.

CLINIC: And it’s a positive test. Okay. And when did you have your last menstrual period?

CALLER: It was like the first week of December.

CLINIC: December?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. So nothing in January and nothing in February?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me explain what Planned Parenthood does. We do terminations at our Poughkeepsie office and our Beacon office. A positive pregnancy test and a GYN exam is required, and an ultra sound at the time of the appointment to determine how many weeks you are. If the pregnancy is under say 12 or 13 weeks, we can do it. It’s a simple office procedure. If it’s over that, it becomes a little bit more complicated.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Were you using anything for birth control or do you think you’re pregnant from after that period in December?

CALLER: Well, we don’t have any birth control.

CLINIC: No birth control. Okay. When you say the first week in December — I’m just looking because you’re looking kind of close to like the 11-week mark. And let’s see. If you had a period December 1st as opposed to say December 8th, that makes kind of a big difference. Do you have it written down anywhere when you had it?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t we do this? Why don’t we bring you in for a pregnancy test —

CALLER: Mm-hmm. Is there like an age requirement for that or anything?

CLINIC: Pardon me?

CALLER: Is there an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Hold on a minute.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: (talking to another clinic worker) Okay. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: No, there’s no age requirement.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Why don’t I do this? Have you ever been to any of our Planned Parenthoods before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you come to our office tomorrow for an examination?

CALLER: Well, I would have to see if my boyfriend can get off work. But do you know like —

CLINIC: See, this all takes time. And it’s going to require an exam, and then it’s going to require an appointment to where the terminations are done. And time is of the essence for you right now. So it’s pretty important that you try and get this taken care of as soon as possible. We would be able to see you tomorrow for an exam at —

CALLER: Well, do you guys have to tell my mom and dad or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just they can’t find out. Cause like well, my boyfriend, he’s like 22. And we’re planning on getting married because we’re in love. But like they don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. There’s no way they can find out that we’re having sex.

CLINIC: Right. This is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. So nobody would have to find out?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So do you want to call me back to set up that time for tomorrow, or do you want me to set up the appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to him and see, because he’s be the only I’d be able to get there.

CLINIC: Okay. Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Millbrook.

CLINIC: In MIllbrook, okay. Okay. So I’m here until 4:00 today if you want to give me a call back.

CALLER: If it turns out that I’m not pregnant or anything, is there any way I can get birth control?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. We provide those services too. But didn’t you say you did a pregnancy test and it was positive?

CALLER: Yeah, but I don’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t usually get a false positive. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And if you haven’t had a period since the beginning of December, and you’re not using birth control and you’re having sex, that’s a pretty good chance you’re pregnant. Right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That makes sense, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So we’ll try and see you tomorrow. But you have to give me a call back as soon as you can.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Sue.

CALLER: Sue?

CLINIC: Mm-hmm.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Right. And I’m only here until 4:00 just to let you know. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
