CLINIC: Thanks for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Rebecca.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, not at this particular clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah. We have an abortion clinic. Would you like the phone number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 265-9511.

CALLER: Okay. Where is that exactly?

CLINIC: It’s on San Mateo in between (Loomis and Copper?).

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know, — I’m just really worried about all this because like — well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, we wouldn’t have to tell them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s fine. Do you have Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay then, that’s fine. You’re fine.

CALLER: It’s just we were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, it’s completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But if he goes in with you, you know, you guys will have to bring your IDs. But they can tell you all that if you call our surgical site.

CALLER: Oh. But I’m not old enough to drive. I don’t have an ID.

CLINIC: If you have a school ID or something like that. You can ask them that question. I have no idea what they usually do about that.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a school ID either.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: It’s just the thing is, I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and that’s why I’m really worried about all this. So.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Oh, you haven’t?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can call them. You can do it there, or you can do it here, the pregnancy test.

CALLER: So if I come in there would it be all right if my boyfriend was there with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was there for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. All the Planned Parenthoods are completely confidential.

CALLER: Oh, well if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: If you’re not pregnant can you get birth control?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. How soon would I be able to get that?

CLINIC: If you come in before 3:00 today you can get it today.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But all right. But so if I was on birth control you wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t want anyone to know about all this, so.

CLINIC: That’s fine. Do you know where we’re located?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend does. He said that he would take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So. All right. So if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely but, yeah, we can definitely see you today. We have our walk-in clinic today until 3:00, so if you get here before 3:00 we can see you today.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Dr. Ferguson’s office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: The price ranges between 350 to 500 depending on how far along you are and what procedure you choose.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, we schedule an appointment going by the first day of your last period, but that is verified with an ultra sound when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd.

(pause)

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Today it looks like you’re about eight weeks and about five days.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Okay? So that would be 350.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Umm. Usually we only require a patient’s signature when you’re using Medicaid.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay everything for cash.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that shouldn’t be a problem, but let me just double-check, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(pause)

CLINIC: Okay. No. Again, the only time that we would require a parent’s signature is if you were using Medicaid.

CALLER: Okay. So if we were paying with cash, you would have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend and I were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anybody to know about us. Would you have to tell anybody or have him sign any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So do you guys do a pregnancy test before you guys go and do the abortion?

CLINIC: Well, have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. We would need to have you have a positive pregnancy test before we could even schedule the appointment.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you do that there?

CLINIC: Yes. We do offer free pregnancy testing between 9 and 11 in the morning and 2 and 4.

CALLER: Okay. On what days?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So if I came in there and I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: I believe so, yes. You would need to meet with the doctor however. On Wednesdays and Thursdays the doctor does not see patients in the afternoon. So you might want to come — if you’re going to come either tomorrow or Thursday, you might want to come in the morning between 9 and 11.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So I need to call my boyfriend to see what time to come. But is it all right — like you’ve just been so nice. Could I call you back if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Susan. And yes, you can definitely call us back if you have any more questions or concerns. We are open until 5:00, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Boyd. This is (unclear). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: Depending how far you pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far?

CLINIC: Well, tell me the first day of your last menstrual period.

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: It will be $350 if it’s the first trimester. Between 5 to 12 weeks it’s 350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and take care of everything?

CLINIC: Are you on Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Why do we have to call your parents?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. My friend just said that —

CLINIC: No. We never call nobody’s parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? No. And you pay cash. If you had Medicaid and you’re under age, Medicaid wants a note from a counselor or a parent giving you permission to perform the abortion. But we don’t call nobody, and they don’t call anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? If you’re paying cash, that’s no problem.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just the thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything would he have to sign any forms?

CLINIC: It’s very confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Tell me the first day of your last menstrual period again.

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re in the first trimester. You’re about 10 weeks, going to be 10 weeks. So you can come this Friday.

CALLER: Friday?

CLINIC: Uh-huh, in the morning or in the afternoon.

CALLER: Well, will you guys do a pregnancy test first just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You want to call me back?

CALLER: Well, yeah. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there too?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Only if you terminate a pregnancy we give you birth control pills, but we don’t sell any birth control pills to anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do a pregnancy test. You buy one at the pharmacy. Those ones are very good.

CALLER: Oh, they are?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: They are super good.

CALLER: What kind should I get though?

CLINIC: Any kind. The EPT. They’re good, very good.

CALLER: And if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, where should I go to get birth control?

CLINIC: You need to go to your doctor. They’re not going to give you any birth control. They need to do a pap smear on you. Nobody’s going to give you birth control pills just like that.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want my parents to know I was on birth control though.

CLINIC: Well, they don’t have to know either. You just need to take care of those pills so they don’t find them. If you put them in your purse, and you take them everyday at the same time, you know, there’s no problem. Or you can leave it with your boyfriend, whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Alright.

CLINIC: Are you close to Central and Carlisle or Candelaria and Eubank?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend can drive to the Central.

CLINIC: Okay. 265-3722.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was there for that?

CLINIC: No.
